It is going to be confusing for a while:

"Mom, I want an Xbox One for Christmas"...  Mom goes and looks for Xbox V1.   

Xbox is big enough that people will get it eventually.  But I think that right at the first it will be confusing.

As if mom will have a clue what an Xbox V1 even is. Or will be able to find one in the shops. And somehow miss the massive "XBox One" display.

Hence managing to simulteniously confuse users between this product:

And also confusing users who think that numbers that are bigger are better, since Xbox One > Xbox 360 (> Xbox 1).

Wow. Short of calling it "PlayStation 2", I fail to see how they could have sucked so hard at naming this thing.

Absolutely nobody will be genuinely confused by any of this.

So hey, bets. Illumiroom, at launch or as a mid-lifetime boost (sort of like Kinect)? I think the technology looked advanced enough to warrant a launch in november, but it'll probably drive up the cost of the console when it already comes bundled with Kinect. Then again, the rumored $499 price is pretty steep so who knows what's included. They could make it a separate accesory, but eh.

Also: awkward fake families reading from autocue, yes or no? Ha, of course there will be.

Other surprises? Personally I'm hoping for a way more advanced version of Smartglass, where the 360 version was sort of a test and they're now coming out with the real thing.

Will it be something you enjoy? Playing Angry Birds for the Nth time in a row gets boring. People look for escape all the time, and then the escape becomes tedium quickly but they get addicted to the tedium.

All I'm saying is people need to slow down a bit.

The bad thing to me about driving in traffic isn't that I'm driving, but I'm stuck and my options to do things are limited. If my car could drive itself, I'd have a little more flexibility in the case I needed to stop and do something. That'd be nice.

But I don't know that I need to be entertained.

I don't know. A self driving car is the same reason I have a self-washing laundry basket, or heck, even a regular car.

I guess we'll just have to agree to fundamentally disagree here.

What are you going to do to enjoy your time? Post on Channel9? Play Angry Birds? My larger point was what most people would do to pass time in a car ride is just as much a waste of time as driving -- although some people would use it productively. 

What does it matter? As long as people get to choose to do something they enjoy. Which isn't always driving a car.

What ever happened to enjoying driving a car? Or enjoying your time without a phone to keep you company? Are people's attention spans growing smaller?

I would like it better if the message was "Google wants to give you more control over your life."

I'd like to choose when I get to enjoy driving a car, instead of being forced to do it twice a day. I'd be all over a self-driving car, then I can just enjoy my time without having to waste it on driving.

Although:

it would change people's lives by giving them more time to do stuff instead of driving. So basically you can jump in the car, have it drive you to work and spend the 50 minutes or so that takes doing something productive or fun.

A lot of places already have that. The cars are usually super-long and hold dozens to hundreds of people who spend the entire journey doing something productive or fun.

so they have like say a hundred calls that return chunks of json or ask for some but some times things in the json are not there and other times they are, and the name at the top can be the same.

I found my self wondering if they ever had any idea of doing something a bit like a WSDL document to allow a client to build a proxy class to call the thing ?

some guy made a .Net wrapper with all the stuff but it looks like he had to spend a lot of time doing something one off that if they had a WSDL file most of the code could be generated like we do with ASMX or WCF services.

I have only had to deal with a couple of cases but to me it seems like REST / json is a step backwards to the dark ages ....

This. I had to deal with a web api for the first time in years again last week, and I figured "Okay, I'll just add a web reference and generate a proxy and we're done. And then I realised it was rest and there was no definition file, and I had basically gone back in time ten years.

I like the new ASP.NET Web API stuff, but it only spits out REST so the time I gain with it, I immediately lose again building stuff that consumes it.

Yup - service packs don't add features.

Unless there's some sort of good reason, like the protracted development of a successor OS. All service packs seem dissapointing after XP SP2.

What's this about flattening the windows directory?

The Windows Store delivery method is interesting. I'm assuming there's alternatives for the enterprise?
