In Silverlight 3, if you declare a DataTemplate in XAML, there's no way to change the template based on the type of the bound item. In WPF, you can set the DataType property on the DataTemplate, but that property doesn't exist in SL3. Is there any sort of alternative to this? Perhaps an event that gets fired each time an item gets bound, so that you can set the DataTemplate manually in code? I need this functionality in an SL3 application, but the way it looks now, if I want to change the template based on the item's type I have to drop databinding altogether and just manually iterate through an array and add the items myself. Any way around this?

In the WMP thread (http://channel9.msdn.com/forums/Coffeehouse/501704-Charles-Any-Word-On-Interviews-With-The-Media-Player-12-Team/?CommentID=503105#Page=1) there is no way for me to move beyond the first page. The next page/last page buttons do nothing, and clicking on the last post time in the thread list just brings me to the first page again. My profile is set up to always take me to the first unread post, but that doesn't work either. Editing the URL doesn't help either.

Doesn't happen in other multipage threads. IE8 on Windows 7 Pro.

Edit: Oh hey, it happens in the Spam Comment thread on this forum too. Also a three-pager.

I have 3 Windows 7 PC's and one XBox 360 in my home network, but when I click the "Play To" thing in Media Player, it simply says "No Devices found". Has anyone actually gotten this to work?

Backing up WHS [Backing up WHS]

I recently bought a large USB drive to serve as the offsite-backup drive for my WHS. I'm planning to use it to make a backup of my WHS once a month or something so that if my house explodes, I'll only lose a month of work or so.

I added the drive via the WHS console and selected the "backup files on your home server" option or whatever it was called. It then came up with a dialog allowing me to select the fileshares I wanted to backup to the USB drive. I couldn't find any information about wether or not it also backed up the backup database, which was kind of the whole point. Anyone know if it does, in fact, backup the backups? If not, why not? Isn't that kind of the point of backing up the WHS?

Why is it that we've come so far since the first Windows OS, and all the game changing advances that have been made, and all the usability enhancements that have come in Windows 7, a background window can still come up and steal fous when I'm typing something in another window?

I mean, honestly. Is it totally impossible to just make the taskbar button flash or something instead of stealing focus?

Sure, Windows 7, go ahead and cancel that file copy dialog. I was just typing an email while you were copying that stuff, so I actually didn't mean to press cancel when I pressed the spacebar, but go right ahead, I don't mind waiting idly while you completely start over copying those 20GB of files.

I have a DataTemplate that has a bunch of setters to change the template based on certain properties of the bound objects. I need to move the DataTemplate around based on two of those properties. If property A is true, I want the template to be moved downwards 50 pixels. If property B is true, I want it to be moved down 30 pixels. The problem is that these add up: if both A and B are true, it needs to be moved down 50+30 pixels.

The moving itself can obviously be done by setting the RenderTransform property of the template to a TranslateTransform, but I can't figure out how to set that twice so that the second transform is added to the RenderTransform rather than replacing the first one. I'm trying to find a way to create a TransformGroup in the RenderTransform property, and add the transforms to those groups, but I can't figure out how to do that either. Anyone have an idea?

I'm trying to gather all hyperlinks from a RichTextBox in WPF, but the whole FlowDocument class is an enigma. I can find ways to find elements by name and resources by key, but I can't find any way to simply return a collection of all HyperLink comments in the document, or even in each of the document's Blocks. Is there a way to do this?

I have a WPF windows with only a single ListBox control on it. I didn't give the control any fixed size, so it's as large as the window and resizes when I resize the windows. The ListBox has a DrawingBrush for a background that consists of a GeometryDrawing of five horizontal LineSegments. When I make the window higher, the ListBox gets higher and as a result, so do the lines, giving them the appearance of becoming thicker. This is all fine.

The ListBox is bound to a collection of objects, and I've set an ItemTemplate pointing to a DataTemplate that consists of a single Path. When running the application, the ListBox gets populated with the Paths just fine, but when I resize the window (and accordingly the ListBox), the contents of the ListBox don't size along with it.

I went for Paths rather than raster images as list items specifically because I wanted them to resize nicely. Is there any way to do this? For instance, by having the height of the listbox contents always be 10% or so of the height of the listbox that contains them?

I know that IE6 is a totally ancient browser and that not supporting it would be great, but I and possibly others are still stuck on IE6 at work due to annoying IT people/ancient web apps that aren't supported any more/whatever.

The editor rarely, rarely displays the toolbar on IE6. Only after furious refreshing or sometimes just giving up and coming back later do the toolbar buttons appear. Can something be done about this for those of us who are still living in corporate 2001?

Look at that empty quote box, with the actual quoted text beneath it. This has happened several times for me lately.

Edit: Actually, this may be an IE6 formatting thing now that I try it in firefox.

I keep getting a security credentials dialog that asks my username and password for connecting to mscommunities.com on every C9 page I request. Just cancelling the dialog works, but it's pretty annoying.

I'm trying to use an XmlTextReader to grab the XML from an RSS feed, like so:

When running this in the ASP.NET Development server, it works just fine. On IIS though, I get a System.Net.Sockets.SocketException on the rssReader.Read() line, stating "A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time, or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond 74.125.77.133:80"

I'm running both the dev server and IIS on the same machine, by the way, but it also fails on other machines. Now, since this involves the server making a request to some url, and because it works in the dev server, I'm assuming there's something in IIS preventing XmlTextReader from making that request or at least getting the response, but I have no idea what it might be.

Any ideas?

Web Slices [Web Slices]

So, IE8 has been out for a while now.. has anyone ever seen web slices anywhere besides Microsoft or Microsoft enthousiast sites? The only place I've seen them is eBay.

While I think the accellerators are pretty much useless, web slices are the one IE8 feature that I think are actually worthwhile. I was just tracking a UPS shipment and hated the fact that I constantly have to type a long tracking code and click submit, when it would be ideal if I could just add a web slice to my favorites bar that automatically warned me if my tracking status had been updated. But no, no webslices there, or basically anywhere else where I think they'd be useful.

I mean, even the eBay ones are still a really unwieldy implementation where, if you want to keep track of your auction, you have to find the auction back in your search results before you can add it as a web slice. Why you can't just do it from the auction itself is a mystery.

So, what gives? Am I the only one who sees the value in web slices? Why aren't more websites using them?

It's pretty great, I've been looking forward to both Ghostbusters and the Monkey Island remake, and now I got to see 30 seconds of the intro of the former and it won't be back in time for when the latter comes out. Beautiful timing.

I have an enum that FxCop happens to be bugging me about (it's an IdentifiersShouldBeSpelledCorrectly warning), and I actually have good reason to name them as such, so I figured I'd suppress those warnings explicitly in code. However, the only way to do so as far as I can find is to add a SuppressMessage attribute to each member in the enum, which makes the whole thing practically unreadable. Is there any way to tell FxCop to just ignore the IdentifiersShouldBeSpelledCorrectly warning for every member in a certain enumeration?

I'm trying to manipulate an ASPX file via Linq to XML, but when I try to load the ASPX file using XDocument.Load(), it throws up the "Name cannot begin with the '%' character" exception, obviously because of the <%@ Page %> directive.

Is there anyway to have Linq ignore that line or something? I'm noticing that ScottGu's tutorial also uses XDocument.Load() to load an aspx file, but I don't see anything in his code that might prevent the % exception.

I find that styles applied to elements with the class user_(some username) are also applied to elements that should, in theory, have the class user_(another username). On the second page of the IE8 comparison chart thread, a style I've applied to posts by koogle also gets applied to one (!) post by Blowdart.

I have it set in my profile that I'm taken to the first unread post when I click a thread. Until recently I could also just click the 'last post' date in the 'last activity' column in the list of threads, and that'd take me to the actual last post in a thread. Now, it doesn't anymore. I'm not sure where it does take me now, it might be the first unread post, but in any case it isn't the last one.

I'm looking for the best way to sync a bunch of stuff (mainly music and pictures, but in theory it could be my entire Documents folder) to my WHS share. I've been experimenting with Offline Folders, but it's not ideal, and Mesh would be great because it'd sync stuff even when I'm not at home, but Mesh doesn't work on WHS and, in general, still kind of sucks. I'm kind of lost in the forest of sync solutions, so is there anything anyone can recommend for keeping your stuff synced between your PC's and a WHS share?
