Coffeehouse - MSFT destroying its own PR

Pardon me for feeding the trolls, but would you mind explaining why this patent "threw [you] a staggering sucker punch"?

It creates a forced incompatibility between map sites that will cause frustration for users. It can also prevent third party client apps from encoding compatible URLs. That eliminates competition through legal means rather than competing on quality.

Coffeehouse - MSFT destroying its own PR

Channel9 is great. You've been achieving your apparent goals of informing developers and generating a more positive image for the company. I genuinely have a more favorable view of MS after seeing and hearing the individual workers in the videos and
occasionally dealing with a few of them one on one.

Unfortunately reality came along and threw me a staggering sucker punch with the following story regarding MS attempting to patent a representation of longitude and latitude.

http://yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/02/06/1437236&tid=155&tid=109

This type of behavior overwhelms any warm, fuzzy feelings generated by channel 9.

Coffeehouse - What sucks about multimedia on your PC?

Ah. This hits home. My software finds and downloads movies and other files from Usenet and one thing that really burns people up is when they download a 100MB avi file only to find that Windows Media Player can't find the codec. Has WMP ever found any codec
for anyone ever? I've never seen it happen.

Second problem is the ever so fragile avi format itself. Unlike with mpeg files, if just one part of the avi file is damaged or missing, the entire thing becomes unplayable. With mpegs, users are able to download the first part of the file, play it to preview
it and then decide whether they want to download the whole thing. The mpeg format can be as torn up as a block of swiss cheese blasted by shotgun and it will continue to work as long as the first part exists.

Coffeehouse - Any C++ guys out there?

I use C++ for the desktop and PHP for the web.

It's too difficult to keep up with the various technologies that come in and out of favor (Win32, MFC, COM, .Net) so in my current project my app is separated into a core lib and a GUI. The lib is written as much as possible in pure, unmanaged C++, even keeping Win32
calls to a minimum. This increases portability and doesn't require many updates when the technology changes.

The GUI will have no restrictions and will use whatever whizbang, platform specific technology is available.
