IE7 Beta 2 released [IE7 Beta 2 released]

Earlier this evening the IE team released IE7 Beta 2 (English).

This is not a preview or refresh but actually Beta 2, for XP SP2, Windows Server 2003 SP1, XP x64 edition, and even an Itanium version. In the next few weeks, we'll release Finnish, German, Japanese, and Arabic versions. This is a public beta and we are encouraging all categories of users - consumers, developers, IT professionals, everyone - to install and use it.

We just refreshed the IE7 preview build. You can read more about it on the IEBlog at http://blogs.msdn.com/ie/archive/2006/03/20/555703.aspx

This is essentially the latest and greatest IE7. About a week ago we forked this build off our main development branch and stabilized it for the MIX06 release.

Due to some last minute bug finds & fixes, this is actually newer than the build burned on the MIX06 CD - hence the .5 minor build number.

There are a ton of good bug fixes in this build, including the problems with the HTML editor causing problems with things like the C9 post editor.

I recommend reading this article in the WSJ Online, about the engineering changes we've done for Windows Vista.

It covers the Longhorn reset last summer, when we reset with WS03 SP1 code, the layer map, and quality gate process. It's little wording and non-technical, but gives an interesting background on personalities.

And it's essentially accurate, unlike so many articles about MS engineering practices.

Yes, IE7 supports tabbed browsing. Check out what Dean has to say about tabbed browsing in IE7 on the IEBlog.

If time allows, we'll post a more detailed entry on the tabbed browsing implementation like Sam's post re: transparent PNG.

I'm pretty happy with how we're doing tabs in IE7, although the beta build doesn't have everything in it we plan for release. Even with that caveat, I think it's a great experience.

If you're a fan of tabbed browsing, I think you'll like what we've done.
