Coffeehouse - Event Based OS Notifications - A good idea?

Well its not a bad idea.. but it needs to be a little more segmented. you must now ask yourself this question. does this new subscription to "events" model become a service or built into the kernel?

I would suggest a service, that can be setup in XML format, stored in a location in the windows folder where a user can programmatically create an object that can subscribe to a list of the events currently connected to that service.

this way you can make custom events, and any application can use this service to expose events within their respective apps.

its a fun concept, unfortunatly you need time to develop it

Coffeehouse - .Net(C#) vs Java

After a long heated debate for years now, i have come down to:

LEARN BOTH.

end of story

ok to back that up, when you work in the industry you will have to code small segments of "stuff" in java, sometimes these apps are wide spread, sometimes they are not. But If you want to move forward with microsoft you must know at least one .net compatible
language. I suggest C#, or C++ .Net (love C++ .Net, and the next version of C++ .Net / CLR is making me smile already).

Heck you may even find yourself debugging or writting scripts for the bash shell so your unix / linux customers can install your app.

Coffeehouse - Roll call - tell us who you are!

Christopher Prest, I am currently working as a developer for a large company (not microsoft).

I Normally code in C,C++,C# and Java and Our own custom script. I love the .net framework and have been using it for years.

I code for Unix, Linux and Windows. I have been testing/writing code in 64-bit on my spare time.

Outside of work, I try to think up of new innovative software, spend time with friends and family, keep up with the latest tech news, and read as many books I can.

Keep up the good work Microsoft, hopefully One day I can join the team and make a difference there

Coffeehouse - the .Net Must be Failure

I can honestly say, that I love .NET.

I come from both the Unix/Linux and Windows side of coding in C, C++, C#, Java, VB .Net (and a whole load of other languages I never use), and I can say that the .net framework makes my life easier, better and happier as a developer.

It took me 4 months to finally get used to the GC. Once I did, I see how I can use it to optimize my code.

I wish I was able to work for the .Net team at microsoft, but I am just another junior developer here in Canada
