I'd pay 35$. But the way they force everybody to upgrade is disgusting frankly

If anything, it will send all the geeks, pirates, nerds and all those people, who wouldn't normally go to the streets, actually go out and protest.

Local businesses also gotta be suffering from it. All this for what? You can't contain information anyway, so the rationale for doing things like this, as seen to many times in the past, is invalid and does more damage than good.

With major carriers such as Vodaphone colluding with the Egypt government to deny most access to the internet in Egypt, I'd really be afraid what'd stop this from happening just about anywhere else.

Surely with so many countries having ruled that internet is a human right, this shouldn't be possible in our civilized country.

As somebody who uses Vodaphone service(Which is crap), I'm really tempted to switch ISP. Because blocking a whole country like that is just inexcusable

I'd start writing applications to sell in a heart-beat, but given the fact that all predictions says that the adoption of WP7 will be rather low, I do not have confidence in the platform to take off, enough that it's worth me spending time on supporting an application that was only intended to be an application for me, even if I'm sure other people would like it.

It's a chicken and egg problem.

See, I can't commit to actually ever releasing anything. I'm just a hobbyist with some spare-time who wants to write for a mobile platform.

I've yet to find where to register for a developer device though. Also, I'm just a person, not an actual company, so I can't register for the market-place as I have not VAT numbers and stuff.

I got no relations to Novell or the Mono people (just a fan of Mono), but I feel like I should mention you can actually do iPhone development in C# with MonoTouch. You can also write iPhone apps in Flash/Flex now.

So I've been looking at Windows Phone 7. As an iPhone user(I love my phone), my biggest quirk is that the programming model sucks(Objective C is only used on the apple platform, and it's a nasty language), and that in order for me to make applications, I need to PAY Apple. And I can't deploy any applications to my phone without putting it on the market-place.

Along comes Windows Phone 7. It uses my favorite language and IDE, and it doesn't look all that bad.

Now, investing time and money into a new application model is a pretty big deal. And given that in order to run an application on the phone, you have to submit it through Microsoft, just like with Apple. That means in order for me to write programs that I'd wanna use, I'd have to support it in case other people wants to buy it. 

That leads to following question: Is Windows Phone 7 gonna be adapted widely enough that it's a worthwhile investment? Gartner estimates that WP7 will be the 6th most used Mobile Platform, which is not very encouraging. 

So how the hell does one justify spending time on WP7? The success of the Windows Platform is based on the fact that good tools are readily available, and you can execute any program on any computer that runs Windows. But given that it's my understanding that this will not be the case on WP7, but that Microsoft has to approve your application, then how is WP7 not gonna fail against other platforms?

I wish they'd bring out those MCPD books a bit sooner after a new version of the Framework comes out. I think the 4.0 foundation book isn't coming out until november, and the entire track may take until well into 2011. I'm kind of wondering if just the upgrade exam covers all the differences between the 2.0/3.0/3.5 certification and the 4.0 certification well enough.

 

Anyway, that foundation training kit is on my shelf as well, as is the ASP.NET 3.5 one. Apart from that, I still regularly dig out Code Complete and WPF Unleashed.

 

If you mean non-programming books, that's too long a list.

When I moved, I didn't bring my whole book-shelf. But I made damn sure to bring my copy of Code Complete. Best book, ever!

I take it that the foundation training kit is good? I'm already well-versed with C# and .NET, but I guess it covers just about everything, judging from the size?

I've been gone from the forum for a while, as I've been relocating to Iceland and started a job. But now that things are starting to calm down, I wanna start reading books again, as I've finally got time!

So here's me wondering what books I should acquire and read over the next period of time. What's on your bookshelf, that you haven't regretted reading?

I ****ing love it! I went to Iceland 4 times before finally moving here. Haven't regretted it.

Reykjavik is the nicest town ever. And I don't need no stinking car to get around, and I have lost of a lot of weight by being able to walk around where-ever I need

The volcano isn't a problem. I moved to Iceland 7 months ago, and I've only had any problems with it for about 3 hours, when a cloud moved through Reykjavik briefly. Otherwise, it's just been causing havoc elsewhere in the world
