  • What are/were your parents doing?

    Father : Firefighter Captain (ret)
Mother : Insurance Salesperson / Rancher (semi retired)

  • How Did You End Up in Tech?

My original degree was in industrial design. Since cad was pretty new I ended up doing lisp for Autocad (ugg) since I was the only person brave enough for the job.. Tongue Out

Ended up on the computer aided engineering side of of the biz and here I am.

  • Warning about new Vista Updates

I have had the same problem with my laptop load of Vista. It has happened three times. I was using Vista Business on our AD network at work.

I formatted the whole thing and went back to XP last week Mad I usually love bleeding edge stuff but Vista just kept pissing me off.

Not a Vista Hater but until I get my Tablet I don’t really need it.

  • Why are we here?

I mainly lurk but my original reason for visiting was getting a behind the scenes view of people and tech at MS. This put a face to the nameless folks who make it all happen.

I don’t post much anymore but still enjoy reading the post from the C9 members.

I do wish for a more “informal” style dialog. It seems that things have gotten a bit strained the last four or five months.

I personally do most of my programming in the Notes world but still enough .net to keep me interested here.

I like to hear what the community has to say. The regulars sans the zealots (on both sides) keep me lurking. Ross I think mirrors a lot of my thoughts at times.

I myself get the feeling that MS has internal strife with what C9 should be. I think there are the “dialog” faction and the “marketing” faction.

(edit per my total lack of grammer)

  • Developing for Sharepoint on XP using SP extensions

Your best bet is to build a VM with Server and sharepoint.

I haven't found a way to run WSS on XP.

  • Taking picture of a fast F1 car?

The camera hardware has a lot to do with it. Fast autofocus is a must.

Also the more open your lens (F-stop wise) the faster you can focus.

If your using manual focus the cars are so fast that its would be near impossible to get a good shot unless you get you fixed focus point down and have an insance shutter speed.

I didn't do (try really) any of thos blurr speed pix due to my cameras slow autofocus. I will pick up a D200 to replace my outdated D70 before the nex ALMS.

  • Digg has done lost it's mind

    Let loose the lawyers!

If you can't inovate , litigate!

  • Maybe it's just cause I live in Georgia...

What I would do is take the ordinary and make it special. Like some of the above mentioned do a different take on things.

In the real world there is lots of interfacing with text files and legacy stuff. The guys sitting next to me write COBOL for our mainframe!

Personally I would tackle the trending aspect of it. Link currency trends with world events and past market news.

Lots of fun. My buddie has a Porsche and we hung out at the PorschePlatz.

  • Coffeehouse Stories (how you ended up here)

I started out a graphic design major way back in the day (before PCs were part of the equation).  I moved over to computer aided design (in its infancy) since I loved computers / drawing and the money was good.

I did industrial design for about eight years and gradually ended up the guys that automated the software and kept the cad boxes humming.

Years later I now mainly code and do software architecture / analyst stuff. I enjoy the C9 videos and podcast like Hanselminutes. I get the most out of dev’s talking about their interest and the going deeper stuff.
