Coffeehouse - More Apple Envy in Windows 8.1

Well, if MS can learn a bit from Apple in how to integrate mobile UI with a desktop OS, then more power to em (just don't do something silly like reversing scroll bars).

But back on the original topic: It seemed that, last I looked (which is admittedly quite a while ago) half the apps on the Windows 8 App Store were unit converters. Now that MS is bundling one in the OS, what are all those developers going to dooo? And think of the anti-trust issues!

Again,

Coffeehouse - Windows 8.1 looks interesting

Disappointing that there still doesn't appear to be an official way to run Metro apps in overlapping windows, but the new options for snapping apps are a big improvement. I wonder if the ability to run more than one instance of a metro app snapped side by side is something you can do with any Metro app (and how do you launch a second instance), or if it is something an app has to support (ie: Metro MDI)? Also, I wonder how well desktop apps participate in the new snapping paradigm. They don't do so well in the current arrangement.

I suppose we'll find out soon enough in the coming weeks or at Build.

It's more a "holy crap, man, have you any idea how few people are working on this, and how hard they're working to get it to even ship on time?"

Maybe one day XBox One or a future Xbox will run WinRTs apps. But its not going to at launch, and people buy Xboxes for games and media. And getting the Xbox to have a good experience with most WinRT apps would be hard, and frankly not all that great for customers - at least, compared with having say some exclusive titles, faster performance, or $30 off the asking price.

Core features are going to come first. Other features are secondary.

Or its already in there, called WinXRT internally at MS, and will have its own store with a more limited invite only selection of apps that support XBox's UI and input methods.

Microsoft's (and Google's, and Facebook's) servers are built out of commodity components. They aren't boxes like you'd buy in a store and put under your desk - that's for sure, but they aren't built by Google or Microsoft either. For one, neither Microsoft nor Google has the machinery, or the inclination to build custom RAM chips, processors, hard disks, racks etc etc etc. These are all off-the-shelf components.

Microsoft's and Google's datafarms compete primarily on software and the configuration of the components, not on the components themselves, which are all bog-standard off-the-shelf components.

I'm pretty sure you're the only one in this thread that thought he meant they forge their own chips.
