If you are primarily building data/CRUD apps like the ones with DataWindow, you should look at Visual Studio LightSwitch http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff851953.aspx. There's a good video to watch a demo of it in action here - http://channel9.msdn.com/Shows/Cloud+Cover/Episode-55-Visual-Studio-LightSwitch-with-Jay-Schmelzer

The Kinect for Windows SDK works great with Windows 8 desktop apps. If you just want to have some fun, download the Kinect for Windows SDK and the Kinect for Windows SDK Toolkit which includes a number of pre-built apps that you can play with. That said, you cannot use Kinect in a Windows Store app, with the exception of using an intermediary PC and using the network, with a project like this - http://kinectservice.codeplex.com/
Download the SDK and Toolkit - Note: Some demos require additional software to be installed, like if you're using the XNA Avatar demo, you need to install XNA. Just follow the instructions for each demo and you'll be good.
Hope this helps,

hey, im currently going through the proccess of learning C sharp (it being my first language) and was wondering if anyone new any good beginner videos. ive already gone through Bob Tabor's lessons. (http://channel9.msdn.com/Series/C-Sharp-Fundamentals-Development-for-Absolute-Beginners#tab_sortBy_sequential) and am now looking for something new. all help is greatly appreciated.
If you like Bob's content, you may want to consider his Windows Phone for Absolute Beginner's videos or the recent Windows Store apps for Absolute Beginners series which both build on the content from the C# videos.
We also built two other series for Windows Store apps, the Build your first Windows Store app series in C# and the Build a Blog Reader Windows Store app video series.

@Freeon @Nia - Thanks again, I'm still unburying from all of the things after the event, but it was a blast. Everyone is still talking about how impressive all of the apps were. Thanks again to all of the attendees and check out the Hackathon attendee video from the finals Laura put together - http://channel9.msdn.com/Blogs/LauraFoy/Hackathon-Finals-BUILD-2012
