Unfortunately I can no longer read Darth's name without thinking about Chad. Sorry, Darth.

When I was a lad, we didn't have computers! We were lucky to get a pencil and paper.

Why not just sign up for a free hosted blog (like at wordpress.com)? What form of control are you after that you can't get somewhere like that?

Just interested because I used wordpress and it does everyhting I reasonable want a blog to do (I user Live Writer to post from by desktop).

I'm using wordpress right now. I like it. I was having some problems in the past with spam-submissions, but I believe the newest wordpress upgrades take a few more steps in combatting that.

I would like to keep the blog hosted on my own server, so that if I ever want to do anything with the database, I can. I'm assuming hosting with wordpress limits your db access?

Well, I'm not at all interested in DB acces so I've never looked for access to it.  My blog's not major -- it's just a load of words that I feel urged to write down before they drive me insane.

I keep meaning to investigate if Live Writer keeps a local copy permenantly, but I never seem to have the time/energy.

  • Look Up in the sky! Is it a Blog? Is it a Forum? No, It is Channel 9!

So, what are some reasons you would not provide C9 hosted blogs - aside from the "I don't care" answer. There's always going to be someone who does care - let's hear from that crowd.

    • It dilutes the purpose of Channel 9 - "a window into the cockpit."
    • Forums provide a better conversational model already.
    • There are approximately six gazillion free blog providers out there already who can do a better job because it's their core competency.
    • There are enough trolling idiots already without needing more places to moderate.

    I second this comment.

We can already put blog icons in our avatars, what more do you really need?

  • The best office chair...

I just use whatever chair I can find, but I get up and move around a lot (making tea, mostly).

Joel recommends Aeron charis, but apparently they cost about $900 each.

He's also the reason for my avatar picture -- he wanted a picture of us both with waste-paper bins on our heads.

He may grow up to be a conceptual artist.

  • What was the first tech book you ever read?

The earliest one I can remember was a C programming book from Prentice Hall which I read in 1992.  It was red. It's probably out of print by now.

I read so many tech books, I can't really remember when it all started.
Damn Amazon and it's one click ordering!

  • The problem with wireless mice ...

... is that small boys can run off with them giggling like evil maniacs, leaving you to:

    a)  Go and search behind the sofa for the mouse
    b)  Try to remember how to use Windows with the keyboard only
    c)   Wait until you get to work to check your email.

    I opted for C.

Note to self:  leave mouse on top shelf when not in use.
