Coffeehouse - Vista Security Center problem

My Security Center is alerting me that it can not find my Antivirus software, and that Windows Defender is turned off.

When I click turn on Defender it scans for updates then tells me no new updates are available. Windows Defender will not turn on in the Security Center. I checked Windows Defender and it is running scans and auto updating, however I do not know if it is running
in background.

I installed a new version of AVG. Security Center still does not find AVG antivirus. I received this as part of the AVG install process:
I need suggestions on how to repair Security Center and return it back to normal.

First the driver that ships with Vista doesn't work with OpenGL (supports a very very old version only). I installed a newer driver therefore!

Now I get only 20 fps where my buddy gets 300+ fps. I have a GeForce 6800 Go Ultra and he has a four year old ATI card.

It's weird... Anybody having a solution for it?

Coffeehouse - Running without a virus checker

For all you folks that run Windows without anti-virus and anti-spyware software, good luck. If you surf the net unprotected, I can assure you it is only a matter of time that your system will be infected. I don't care how smart you are.

OK, I run my system with no protection, however it is not Windows. I run Linux as my main OS and have yet to be infected with any type of virus or spyware, however there is nothing to say I am 100% safe, but much safer than a Windows user.

All my Windows systems are loaded with anti-virus and anti-spyware software. I run scans on a regular bases and do find some infections. I'm not saying to depend totally on anti-virus software, you've got to be cautious and use good surfing practices along
with the software.

I believe that, like XP, Vista 32 bit is capped at 4GB address space, which will include mapped areas for your devices (such as the video card). So depending on that, the maximum will be somewhere below 4GB, typically between 3.5 and 4GB.

Sven,
Not sure I totally understand mapped areas for devices. If I have a 512 MB video card with on card memory, I lose 512 MB of memory to mapped devices, and that 512 MB will not be shown as system memory?

I'm just trying to figure out how much memory I need with Vista. I have read on other boards that Vista only recognizes 2.5 to 3 GB with 4 GB of physical RAM installed.

I get what you're saying, but I still think the use of the word "illegal" should be avoided in software that's likely to be used by non-technical users. Given that the content industry is seizing the desktop as part of their little crusade against pirates,
there's too much room for ambiguity. I know people who are afraid to put CDs in their computer after the Sony debacle. It's just so sad, and I think even little things that can make users feel less like criminals will be welcomed.

Yeah, I know how those non-technical users feel. That's why I'm typing this on a
Linux box right now. I'm afraid I'll get one of those pirated XP disk and have the computer cops knocking on my door. Oh by the way, I've never received any error message with this OS... illegal or otherwise.

Coffeehouse - Some devices will not work in Linux after Jan 2008

I don't think anyone is trying to argue that open source drivers are a bad thing (see my earlier post actually). But rather that attempting ot make it illegal to have a closed source kernel module is a bad thing.

What if Microsoft made it illegal to use open source software on Windows?

Yes, that is how ridiculous this sounds.

I'm not saying that closed source drivers are bad or should be made illegal on Linux. I just think device manufactures should provide Open Source drivers for their products and therefore no need to use a wrapper with a Windows closed source driver. Many of
the manufactures don't even provide a Linux closed source driver. Belive it or not, but device drivers in Linux is the number one issue that most users have. Just can't get all their devices to work in Linux. I don't care how stable or secure Linux is, if
your devices won't work, it's not worth much.
