Coffeehouse - Need Reviewers Please

Hi All,

I have three new Fast Track tutorials in draft and ready for review/comment/feedback:

"Calling Accessible Context-Sensitive Help with Unobtrusive DOM/JavaScript"

"Building Accessible Navigation with C.S.S."

"Creating Auto-line Numbered Code Blocks"

May I kindly ask anyone who may be interested to give any or all of these a going-over and provide me with some constructive feedback before publication? If so, please email me at: fmpalinaks AT gmail dot com, and I'll send you a zipped project package (+/-
1Mb each) including the content, markup, .css, and scripts (if applicable).

All work is done within the source code editors of Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition with SP1. As usual, I publish these free to the community with any donations being made to local children cancer crusade funds.

I would truly appreciate your learned advice if you have some time to spare.

Kind regards,
Hi J,

Apologies if you came looking for me....I was in and out of different staff offices all day, one on one interviews - started at 09:30, finished at 17:30 - was offered lunch, but declined to keep things moving. I hope to be hearing back from the lead recruiter
early this coming week, but am keeping a healthy attitude of no expectations. Seriously, i really enjoyed the whole process....it was one, if not the best positive experience I ever had, regardless of what the Team's decision will be.

Coffeehouse - Looking for feedback on site design

Very nice, and I agree with the other observations for the css.

Just a few questions please?

Why are you using xhtml 1.0 strict with a MIME/media type set to text/html? IMHO, xhtml should only be used if you're plugging in other xml namespaces, i.e MathML, ChemML, SVG, etc. into the web page. Also, you must serve all xhtml DTD's with a MIME/media type
of application/xhtml+xml. I didn't see any xml plugins in the page, therefore my question.

My reasoning is that xhtml is only to be used for its modular purposes, as mentioned above, and not as a whip to write so-called "strict" markup. All markup should be written properly, semantically correct and fully accessible by assistive devices regardless
of the DTD it falls under.

Using HTML 4.01 Strict will serve the same purpose. The only change you'll have to make is "opening" up the link and meta element tags in the head section.

Hi Gregs and welcome!
Glad to see you here. Also, if you've got some cool stuff you've done, you can post it to the Sandbox so the forum members can download and play with it. If you think someting might be of interest on the animation side (Maya running on Windows, etc.), let the
Coffeehouse know.
See ya!
Note: For those who might find it of interest, computer-based animation sort of runs in our family. Devo Palinkas, Gregs cousin, was a C programmer at Blizzard Software where she and her husband, David Brevik were instrumental in the Diablo
series of games. They broke away from Blizzard and formed Flagship Studios
http://www.flagshipstudios.com where David is the Chief Visionary Officer. You might have heard of their new game to be released shortly "Hellgate London". Also, if your interested in joining this
kind of company, check out their job site reachable from their home page.

Hi W3bbo,

Although this forum consists of many learned and brilliant developers/programmers, there are also many just starting out on their path to greatness. I don't assume who will use this link to see if the info is useful or not. I put it there to aid in the sharing
of what I humbly think may contribute to everyone's knowledge and growth, regardless of who they may be.

I know that, and I appreciate you posting it for the benefit of others. I was just having a jabb at the Digg crowd: they claim to be a bunch of W3C-worshipping web-designers and PHP developers, yet articles dealing with the absolute basics of the specifications
and their applications get dugg sky-high (an oxymoron if there ever was one).

Thanks for the clarification. I mirror your concern and professional integrity regarding this. Writing valid, semantically correct, and accessible markup + css is still not a primary concern for many in the business.

Coffeehouse - X/HTML Validator/Editor

Like other Niners, I use the VS 2005 Team Edition source code editors to write XHTML 1.1, XML, XSLT and CSS. I have no need to use Expression Web Designer, but I'm sure the free Express version has a really good text editor for you to do this work. If I
didn't have VS, that's what I would choose. Some recommendations:

Test all markup as you're writing it, real-time in browsers (try not to use the Design View of any editor tool). Firefox and Opera will live very happily alongside IE on the same machine.

Test all (X)HTML and CSS against the W3C Validators. You can upload individual web pages and stylesheets directly to their servers. Other good validators are also available. Try a Search for more of these.

Coffeehouse - MVP == Most Visible Poster?

Ciao bello,

Maybe I can put your mind somewhat at ease. I'm new to this award as I mentioned last week, and what I say here is of my own opinion. The MVP award is an invitation. MSFT asks whether you would like to either accept or pass on it. If you've accepted and on
your anniversary, whether you get another invitation or not is totally at MS's discretion. I think we don't have to assume that they're keeping an eye on things. Hope that helps?

Coffeehouse - Some good news

Thanks to all for the congrats, it's appreciated.

I can only speak of what I do. I seriously don't have a clue as to how Microsoft makes these decisions, and the opinions below are strictly mine.

Online participation:
I am an active contributing member to about five lists concentrating on Windows Help systems and documentation. I really enjoy the MSDN Developer Documentation and Help Forum, the Yahoo! Help Authoring Tools and Techniques (HATT) list and the Yahoo! MSHelp2
list. Advice: Pick several active lists in your specialty and start helping those who ask for guidance and problem solving. Do it every day. If you don't know an answer, there's no problem. Someone else may, and sort it out. Try to be as accurate as possible
with your answers. If you can lay it out flat - do so. If you can't, but have a really good clue to what's needed, revert the poster to resources which will help them out.

Publishing online:
Create a blog or website, or ask for a page on a friend's site, so that you can start publishing articles which you think are instructive and important in your specialty. It doesn't matter if someone else has already published on a similar or the same topic.
You are unique, and your ideas really do matter to many people.

Speaking engagements:
Using your online publications as a base of knowledge, offer yourself as a speaker/presenter to different associations/clubs/groups/schools/universities catering to your specialty. You'll be surprised at how many will say cool, come over and speak to us. Don't
worry about getting paid to do it. Just do it.

I think it all comes down to a constant and genuine willingness to help others with Microsoft technologies. Hope that offers some ideas?

Frank

Coffeehouse - nice weather?

Tomorrow we're setting off to the lowveld to a game ranch for three days. Temp should be between 100 and 110 F during the day and in the mid ninties during the evening. They've got some tame animals wandering around the guest area, a cheetah, for one.
Will take some pictures and post them here to show you what mid-december in South Africa is like.
