Hi

I am looking in to writing a c# application in .NET 3.0 and localization has been highlighted as an issue.

I haven't really written a localized app but I am aware of using resources and dotnets ability to choose the correct localized assembly when required.

However, someone has suggested to me they would like to use a database in order to provide the localized strings. My first thought though would have been to use .NET resources. I can see the db approach would be more accessable to someone who didn't have any kind of resx editing tool (if there is such a thing), but I see that there is more to localization than just providing translated strings.

Because of these conflicts of interest I wanted to ask everyones opinion:

Is there a best practice doc anywhere?

Has anyone localized an app using a database to provide the string and run in to problems?

Are there tools out there to allow a non dev to manipulate .resx files when localizing?

Any finally, the big question would have to be; does the current localization recommendation change if I target WPF?

How are some of the enterprise dotnet apps out there localized? What about the Expression suite?

Regards

[How does outlook manage offline working?]

Hi guys,

I'm interested in patterns for creating a smart client that will work offline as well as online. I have read numerous articles on this but they all seem to refer to the Offline Application block which dates back to .NET 1.1 and is not updated for .NET 2.0 (or 3.0)

I feel outlook is a good role model for the offline worker, it seems to manage synchronizing with offline data pretty seemlessly.

From reading tho offline application block docs it says there are two types of offline application; 1) Data centric where synchronization is achieved through something like Sql Replication and 2) Service centric where service requests can be queued up in a client and later replayed (when the network is available) to synchronize.

Having spent some time working with replication I knows its complications and I'm keen on looking at a more service centric approaches. With service centric I'm not quite sure yet whether it will be suitable for a large desktop application that requires offline support.

After all this, I was wondering how does Outlook managed to support offline? I want to start using Vista but I must maintain support for WMP 6.x.

At present the VB project has a reference to msdxm.dll and the media player appears as a control in the toolbox. We currently use ClickOnce to publish internal builds of our application to our intranet but what should we do when our product is released and sold?

What I mean by that is; do we need to write an MSI package for it or do we distribute our final product from our WebSite using ClickOnce?

Personally I have found ClickOnce a great idea, it is so much easier updating clients with new releases but that's easy for me to say, as a techie person I know how to publish ClickOnce files to my server, but will a customer?

One solution I can see is that we write an MSI that will publish our product on a customers deployment server, but then what do we do when we issue an update? A new MSI, an upgrade to the previous?

I hope you can see my dilema. There is a gap in my understanding of ClickOnce; this is how we get it out of the door and on to a customer deployment server.

Any comments / suggestions?

Graham

in reply to ClickOnce in the real world

<evnet:views>9243</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/79596/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>As an ISV writing a saleable product with Beta2 of the framework I'm interested how people perceive ClickOnce. I'm writing something now and I originally thought; wouldn't it be nice to give the user the ability to format many of the long text fields they enter. Now, I've started to run in to problems because the text the user entered is stored in the db as RTF and I'm trying to report on it.

I just wondered how many people thought rich text was worth the effort??

Regards

Graham

in reply to RichText usage.

<evnet:views>2856</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/71133/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>Hi,

I was wondering how many people out there use Rich Text in their apps?
