Coffeehouse - Vari-focal "progresive" lenses

So sure eniugh when I hit 40 my eyes started to go and after boucing around with a few of the "off the shelf" reading glasses I eventually settled on my own prescription based pair.

So here is the story, I ordered some aditional reading glasses from one of these companies based 'somewhere else on the planet' and received an additional pair of reading glasses. Great!

After I trod on my spare pair and ordered a replacement from the same company I was surprised when they came back and apeared blurry. Bit of a revelation when I looked up though as objects that I had previously thought were sharp were now 'pin sharp' (I had ordered long distance instead of reading lenses by mistake)

So (don't worry I am getting there) this was all fine for a while and I even occasionally pick up the long sighted pair for watching HD films.

Then I got a new laptop that supported 'Intel WIDI' and proceeded to set up a shared monitor between my laptop and TV on the other side of the room.

All worked well and for a while I sat there with my reading glasses perched on the end of my nose such that when I looked at my laptop I could see eveything in focus, and when I looked up I could see everything on the TV (albeit sharp but not 'pin sharp')

So I decided to try varifocals and they arrived this morning.

I have to say they are a bit of a let down - I guess I was expecting a miracle but what you actually get with these lenses is a fairly small "sweet spot" This guy explains it better.

So I guess I will endevour to persevere for a while.

Anyone else have any experience of this process?

Coffeehouse - Microsoft "OSLO"

Having a great time at the SOA conference in Redmond this week (as only a geek can) Big news from the keynote this morning was OSLO - more information here:

or the more official version here:

Interestingly, having largely abandoned UML and Rational, Microsoft is embracing the concepts behind these with this new strategy. BPEL was mentioned alongside a modeling language capable of handling SOA concepts and feeding into a new execution engine -
a future version of Biztalk!

Coffeehouse - Anyone try Leopard

I am over in the US at the moment and thinking of getting a MacBook Pro tomorrow, with Leopard being part of the attraction. I have played with Bootcamp and also Parallels (dammned impressive) and find that I quite like having the option to run OSX on my
laptop - if for no other reason that to get a slightly different perspective.
Having got over most of the 'how the bloody hell do you do this on a Mac' type questions I find that maybe once in every half dozen of so times I switch on the machine I boot into OSX . If all I am doing is playing or checking emails/browsing the web then its
fine, if I want to delve a little deeper I might run VISTA in 'parallels conformance' mode, of course if I want to do anything with muscle (dev wise) then I have to boot back into VISTA.
Incidentally, one of the cool things about Parallels (VM) is that it can run the cold boot VISTA Partition as an OSX Virtual Machine, (ie any changes made while runiing VISTA in OSX are still there when I cold boot back into Vista).

My nephew is now not not talking to me as he thinks I have turned into an Apple fanboy, damn, I quite fancy one of those "Touch" things as well ...

Coffeehouse - Come Work on Our Team

Not suggesting for a second that I had a chance but I bottled it in the end ...

Sent Jeff an email within a few minutes of seeing the cross post on Channel9, started planning my video 'sell' (I was going to interview one my colleagues who specialises in Microsoft development). Had a chat with my wife about it (she has just started a
new role herself so timing not great).
So why did I bottle out?
Well generally I am a great believer in keeping options open and by rights I should have applied just to see what happens. But in the end a few factors disuaded me, chief of which is probably knowing myself well enough to know that in spite of my enthusiasm
I am not one of those guys with 'hidden' evangelist traits. Also, I 'secretly' filmed myself asking myself some questions* and wasn't impressed with what I saw. Lasty of all for the most part I pretty much love my role as a solutions architect/developer/geek and
if it ain''t broke ...

Any other niners care to share their story?

I've been gradually depleting my stocks since I was over in June :

http://channel9.msdn.com/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=317560#317560).

I asked Charles for a nine guy when I was over - we met up for lunch and I left with a big bag full of the little criitters. I have a few left which I will keep bringing to dev events in the UK (hopefully DDD next month if I manage to get myself invited).

BTW Thanks to all the organisers of the SQLBits event -it was a great day!
