@blowdart. i think that proves just how unsecure autosave is for terrorists.

Microsoft and various other companies have got it all wrong.  Today the UK Government came out and said that autosave is unsecure; every tech company implementing it since year dot has got it wrong, users don't want autosave!

Ian Duncan Smith on the BBC Radio 4 Today show (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qj9z) claimed that autosave is unsecure, that by offering this feature, users could have their accounts hacked and information entered can be cloned.  He also suggested that this was designed by users (from user studies).

Sigh...

So I admit it, I'm a sucker for marketing. 

MWC is starting this week and it's looking increasingly unlikely (based on my own speculation) we'll have a new Windows Phone 8 flagship device announced from any of the main Microsoft manufacturers.

HTC and Sony have played their cards for their flagship android devices for the first half of the year (the One and the Xperia Z respectively), and we're still waiting to hear from Samsung about any Galaxy or Note follow ups.

As I said, I'm a sucker for marketing, so that while the One and Xperia Z have been announced, the differences to my phone usage (internet browsing, messaging, angry birds, news apps) won't change that much with these new flagships as to my old flagship, nor will it change very many other peoples use. However the public perception of seeing a new flagship, the hype around it, does mean most will be loking to them for their contract upgrades over the next few months.

I get the feeling Microsoft and it's WP8 partners want to ape Apple in some ways.  They want to release one flagship (per manufacturer) a year rather than a cavalcade of devices throughout the year. I really would like a Nokia 920, but it feels old compared to the Xperia Z and the One...

anyone else feeling the same?

Has google really just announced a laptop that is essentialy a browser... for $1300?

i don't get it

My trusty old Asus laptop is starting to get a bit creaky, plus it weighs around 2.5kg (probably. It's hefty at least).  So i'm looking to pickup a new laptop this year, and an Ultrabook appeals to my tastes and sensibilites.  The Lenovo Carbon X1 (14") and the Samsung Series 9 (15") both look generally perfect.

Is anyone out there doing development on an ultrabook/hybrid (hybrid being something like the surface pro or the Lenovo Carbon touch). Have you found any issues with development on these machines over the use of a standard laptop that doesn't have limitations of soldered ram and such?

I have a friend with a laptop running windows 7 starter.

He's trying to install itunes on tis PC, which he had done before but then uninstalled it and now has a problem with it. everytime he goes to install itunes it gets half way through before freezing and then eventually retuning an error about installing a MS VC 80 x86 assembly.

I have tried installing in admin mode but have had no luck with this. I have also downloaded one of the MS VC packages from the microsoft site and this also errors out with 1 second to go.

anything i might be missing?

Ok so the last time i posted about search on the microsoft site, it wasn't clear cut who was in the wrong (me or Microsoft).  This time i believe there is irefutable proof that Microsoft don't really know what they're doing when it comes to powering search on their site.

Right well... why does Windows server appear twice in this list? whats up with that?

And wait.... what, why are you linking me to wikipedia... that isn't a microsoft site.. also why is there nothing about beta in any of those search results? and why when you change any of the criteria in "by download type" do the search results never change?

It's been a long while since I've updated my google reader feed with developers to follow, and the ones I have been following have been slowly going to ground (Dare, Larry... where are you guys).

There hasn't been any good excitement/speculation/rumours/etc etc in my feed for my liking, so who are you guys following? What are the active development blogs you're reading and more specifically, which ones are all about Build?

The IT departments I have worked in have been money spinners, the first firms moreso.  Without the IT department in the first company, the company would of been dead in the water.

This really applies to those who don't work for a technology company.

The 2 firms I have worked for haven't been pure technology companies, and despite IT being one of the major backbones they always seem to treat it like it's a 6th leg of a 4 leg table (because legal or someone is always the 5th leg).

As a CIO, Manager, developer or anything to do with IT, what do you do to encourage your company to talk about IT playing a serious part and becoming that 4th leg instead of the 3rd cousin twice removed?  Or am I the only person to feel like this?
