Coffeehouse - 2 questions about games...

I would pick PC over consoles any day but that's just my opinion. There are negatives and positives to both. It is cheaper to get a console but if you skip the console and spend the saved money on a PC then you can get a pretty nice PC.

As for recommendations you seriously need to play the Half Life 2 series, Portal and if you are into multi-player team games Team Fortress 2. I think they might have demos of HL2 and Portal. The most amazing thing is that the entire HL2 series (three games), Portal and TF2 are together in the Orange Box and is priced the same as other single package games on the market. I think Valve has the most innovative and creative games out there. Also the Orange Box is available on the PC, 360 and PS3.

There are so many more new or improved core technologies in Vista that you did not even mention. From a technical and forward looking perspective they are very exciting. If more developers really took hold of this stuff and used it I think we would see some
very interesting things. I do have to agree that the average nontechnical user may not see too many differences since these new technologies are platforms for building better software.

You can have a playlist as an alarm clock using the task scheduler.

Just go to the scheduler through the start menu and create a simple task. Have it open an application but when you browse for the app, instead select the playlist you want. To make it random set WMP to shuffle.

Read the article from the link above, it deals with all your questions. Basically in Vista you don't have "documents and settings" anymore; instead there's a folder called "users' in the root directory. Under this you have folders for each user account and
then all the specific content sub folders. I believe the beta will be valid up until June? July? Not 100% sure.

Umm.. you must have not tried playing any DOS games on Vista. NTVDM is totally crap now that it won't even lock video memory properly for full-screen DOS games.
No King's Quest VI, Hero's Quest, Fifa Soccer w/ sweet intro music...
Excuse me? Contribute to the thread, or shut up. That was a long post, and with out a spell checker there were going to be typos (yes, typos, not spelling mistakes, as should be obvious when looking at those).

C9 really does need a feature that lets us ignore people.

You read my mind! We need a feature to ignore people. BTW there is a spell checker addon for IE 7! Here's the link:

http://www.iespell.com/

Saves my life all the time. Also lets you look up words in Merriam Webster or Wikipedia by highlighting text and right clicking.

Another great addon that is like Firefox's inline search:

http://www.ieforge.com/InlineSearch/HomePage

The platform MS has developed for Vista wont be very obvious until more applications using it are released. Here are some pretty cool .Net 3.0 apps:

British Library's Turning the Pages 2.0

This is an app that lets you interact with virtual representations of priceless books from the British Library. There is also no need to install it since it runs in the browser.

New York Times Reader

This is very cool app if you read the news. It gives you a much nicer reading experience compared to the web or the traditional paper. On the download page they don't mention the reader has "search as you type" which also integrates into the Vista's start menu search.
It also has a nifty feature where you can see in a dynamic animated diagram how articles relate to each other by topics.

Coffeehouse - transfering OEM Vista Premium to another machine?

It seems Windows only cares if you change the motherboard.

Quote from the article:

"Nevertheless, I've known users who got around this limitation by calling Microsoft and reporting that their motherboards
died when they wanted to build a new computer. It is Microsoft's policy to allow motherboard swaps in instances where a system is defective or has suffered a hardware failure. But you shouldn't bank on this approach; there's no guarantee it will work
and, well, liars don't get ice cream."

Man... I really wanted ice cream though.

Coffeehouse - My first real problem after Vista upgrade ...

The IXUS I. I did some digging and that's the SD10 which as you mentioned does not adhere to Picture Transfer Protocol but instead uses a WIA driver. At the canon download page they have WIA drivers for XP. You might want to try these out since some XP
drivers work with Vista. Here are some steps to take though:

If the installation doesn't want to start because it complains about not being installed on XP go to the properties of the installer and click the compatibility tab. Then select to run the installer in XP SP2 compatibility mode. Also to make sure you can
cleanly restore everything if something goes wrong create a restore point before installing the driver. If something goes wrong or the driver doesn't work just do a restore (works like a charm thanks to volume shadow copy). Hope the XP drivers work out.

I also want to mention that you might want to invest in a multi card reader since they are capable of transferring data much faster (make sure to buy a decent one though) and it also gives you a backup in situations like this.

What is your model? I have the SD500 (I think IXUS 700) and it works fine without drivers. Which model do you have?

If it worked in XP without special drivers it should work in Vista. Most cameras should work without specific drivers. I think there might be a problem with the particular camera or the memory card.
Try taking the card out and using a card reader. Also try plugging the camera into an XP machine.

You can then multiply the number of entries in the list by 2, as we have to count all of the -N versions being distributed in the EU.

Oh and then you can add:

Windows Vista Starter Edition

That makes for 27 ((13 *2) + 1) different editions of Windows Vista in my book. That certainly meets the dozens standard in my eyes.

Wrong

Let me explain where you twisted reality into your little magic fairy land. Let us first get something straight a version of an OS means it has to provide a unique set of functionality. OEM versions are the EXACT same as retail versions. Upgrade copies ARE
NOT different versions and have everything their non-upgrade counter parts have. In fact you can even do clean installs with them.

So now lets get the real core of your idiocy. You are saying there are a dozen or more versions for the home consumer.

Basic, Premium, Business, Ultimate are available to all consumers. So that's 4 for most people. There are only two N versions (Basic and Business) and these are only available in Europe. That's 6 versions for European homes. These editions are a joke put
on by the EU but I'll just humor you and actually consider them as versions. Starter Edition is only available in third world countries so these countries will see 5 versions. Enterprise is only available for... you guessed it: enterprises who purchase a
volume license. Most enterprises would never even consider the other 4 choices (since they add media functionality companies don't want), but let us just say they are idiots; that comes out to 5 choices (I don't even know why they would pick business but
your argument is looking bleak so I'll give it to you). So go back up and look closely. What is the most any one group can chose from? Six. Because of the EU crap. Wow. That's a lot less than 12. I even skewed the results slightly into your fantasy
land to help your argument.

In REALITY most people have 4 to choose from.

You say there are 27 different editions of Windows "in your book". Does your book have dragons and unicorns on it? There are only 8 versions total. This doesn't even remotely matter since the most anyone can even choose from is six.

I'm getting tired of people bending reality to fit a magical fairy land in their mind. This type of reasoning shows why you have no objective basis AT ALL. It's even worse that all this delusion and fantasy is fueled by your fanaticism.

Coffeehouse - How true is this?

It's too bad there is a lot of misinformation out there surrounding Vista. The compatibility issues really aren't the fault of the OS and should be expected with a shift in OS architecture. The requirement issues and restriction issues are also over
exaggerated.

I think most people at some level realize Vista is better than XP. The potential is all there; it's just a matter of time for the rest of the market to utilize the new platform. The OS is fundamentally still a tool and platform for all other applications.
We won't see the real potential of Vista until more developers leverage the new functionality.
