Yeah. There is still stuff missing that I would love to see:
- An easy way to extend IE with own plug-ins (big bummer - i hope we get more into this direction with IE9)
- "Show HTML source of selected" that includes how JavaScript modified the source.
- Spellchecker

Other than that it looks quite cool. No crashes (other than the one that i wrote earlier) with it.
to view source of a specific area of the page, including changes from javascript, you can use the dev tools.

press F12 to open the tools.  turn on 'select element by click' (in the Find menu or the arrow cursor icon) and then click the area you're interested in.  that selects the portion of the tree for that element and if you want to see it in HTML view, click 'view element source with style' button (or use view->source->DOM (Node) or Element Source with Style).

I don't get the blue icon, but the accelerators do appear (and work) in the context menu. Is there a difference between the ones in there and the ones that appear after clicking the blue icon?

yeah, it makes sense that using view source is faster than loading up a full IDE or starting from scratch in notepad.

hopefully some of the quick edits you're talking about are possible through the new tools.  click on any HTML attributes or CSS to edit them.  and if you want to make larger changes, press the 'Edit' button in the toolbar of the HTML tab.  It does a simple innerHTML get and put to let you change things easily.  and running script is possible from the 'Conole' in the Script tab like any immediate window.

How is IE8 being distributed? recommended update on WU? low priority?

Windows Update will offer - it will never install silently - IE8 Beta 2 to users if:
- they're using XP, Server 2003, or Server 2008
- they have automatic updates turned on
- the're running IE8 Beta 1

distrubution details for the final release are still TBD.

you're correct that the new source viewer doesn't support editing.  we'd like to understand more about how frequently you view source->edit->save->refresh as a development step.  our thinking was similar to steveo_'s that itwasn't that common but that could be wrong.

also, you can tweak IE to still use notepad.  the steps on on this page: http://www.enhanceie.com/ie/webdev.asp.
