I have to agree about the summary list not being resizeable! Same with the lists in the Reliability and Performance Monitor.

The formal request process...

Tech Off - string.empty and

There are many things you have to remember about asp web controls. Two of them are:

1. When your code runs on the server side, it is seeing the ASP control, not the HTML control that ends up on the page.

2. ASP controls do not map in a one to one fashion to HTML controls. ASP has to build them out of one or more HTML controls and manipulate their contents to fit the control.

In this case, #1 means that you are looking at an abstraction that will later be rendered into HTML. #2 means that when a asp:DataGrid is turned into an HTML TABLE, empty cells cannot be left empty or they will not be displayed properly. To deal with this, they
are 'filled' with a non-breaking-space.

Not necessarily - software that simulates input could in itself be protected with DRM, and interact with windows TPM systems.

What you are asking for is already there. The UAC prompt is in a trusted process that can only be accessed by other trusted processes. The only way a piece of software, malware or accessibility software, can touch it is if it already has fully trusted and elevated.
In that situation it could do anything it wants without triggering UAC anyway.

Coffeehouse - Event 1002 Error, DHCP-Client

I would set your lease time to 60 min and see what happens. You should see your machine renew it's address every 30 minutes. It also seems strange that the starting range of the DHCP pool is the address that Vista is calling the server. Since your routers
address seems to be 192.168.1.1, you might want to start the pool at 192.168.1.2. Jorgie

Yea, I have only been supporting MS products since Dos 3.2.

The regestry corruption problems in Win9x/Me do not justify spouting BS like 'they added it cause they wanted to create a single point of failure.

'The growing pains the registry has gone through (many of which were casued by the pre XP multitasking model) do not negate the advantages of having the registry.

People love to snipe at the low hanging fruit. The person who started the thread asked a simple question. Smart-arse remarks provide zero information and nearly zero entertainment for everyone but the smart-arse that posted them.

I guess we should expect as much in the coffehouse...

Come to tech-off you actually want to have a discussion.

By having a single point of failure for virtually every application on a disk sector, developers are forced to get better in error handling.
In the long run, you see that devs were able to take to .Net exceptions with ease.

What a bunch of <bs>... (why wasn't bu...sh*t bleeped?)

The registry is a core service. If your OS core is down, your appication won't work anyway.

You might as well have said that they chose to use a 'file system' (insert ANY core service here) just to add a single point of failure.

If your application does not need the registy, don't use it. You don't have to be a dick about it.

Coffeehouse - The Registry. Why, exactly?

I can think of two big ones off the top of my head:

1. Speed - some portions of the registry may me accessed thousands of times a minute.

2. Security - forcing access through a controled api allows ACLs to be use in ways that would be really messy to replicated in flat text files

Just think of all they reasons why you would move from a flat text file to a 'real' database and chances are they will apply.

At some point the sum of these advantages overcame the advantages (simplicity/human-readability) of ini/config files.

BTW, no one if forcing the use of the registry for everything. There are still plenty uses for ini/config files.

Coffeehouse - Vista network configuration mess

I think the public/privite thing was added to late to allow it to apply 'by network'.
You don't need 'Public' to activate the firewall. The firewall works just fine on 'Private' networks. 'Public' just goes one step further and disables all exceptions.

Coffeehouse - Can OpenGL Keep Up With DirectX10?

Its a way to keep all commercial game developers targetting Windows and the Xbox 360 while making it much harder to port them onto other platforms and game consoles.

People may see it that way, but back when Alex St. John (now at WildTangent) help create it, they designed it by asking developers what tools they needed and building from there.

Back then, developers wanted 4 things:

1. a supportable way to do graphics quickly without knowing anything about the specific video hardware in the system.
2. Some way to use network services without being networking experts
3. Some way to access joystks and other controllers without know what brand/model is going to be used.
4. an easy way to produce the best quality sound the hardware can support with out knowing that much about the hardware.

OpenGL has never tried to do anything but #1. That is at least one reason DirectX exists.

Coffeehouse - Unable to open XPS documents under Vista...

Give me a break. It is nothing to do with XPS, it is a file-extension/type problem.

Everyone better get ready to see XPS printers kick PostScript's butt in the mid to low end printer market. We just got a new network printer at work and they wanted $300 just for a downloadable PostScript engine for it. XPS will likely be a free update.

...and thank adobe for not letting MS include pdf creation.

Even though the PDF spec is now free to use, Adobe threatend to sue MS if they included it in Office 2007 or Vista.

Of course you can still download the Office piece.

Coffeehouse - Vista x64 on a pc?

The big quesiton is WHY?

There are few IF ANY reasons to run Vista64 on a laptop and tons of reasons NOT to!

The only folks that will see any real benefit from a 64 bit OS at this early stage are those folks running servers that will actually use the extra bit-width in a meaningful way.

You are really asking for lots of pain for no real gain.
