Coffeehouse - No Glass Sucks

I have a Tecra S3 Laptop with Nvidia GeForce Go 6600 video card (128MB RAM on it) and there is no Aero Glass by default with Vista Beta 2.

1) I downloaded (from nvidia.com) and installed the Nvidia Forceware driver for Vista Beta 2, but there is no GeForce Go 6600 in the list, I choosed a similar one: GeForce 6600 GT

2) I adjusted the settings to the 32bit color depth and 1400x1050 for the builtin LCD display

3) finally I forced to refresh the performance rating (it was "1" with the default SVGA driver, it is "4.3" with the new driver).

And I have Aero Glass now

The Sandbox - DiskSpace visualizer

The title says everything. You can navigate through your folders and you can see the allocated spaces on the hard disks.

This little project contains some interesting solution/idea, worth to see:

- Uses ThreadPool queue to get the information from the hard disks
- Uses Avalon to visualize the data, concretely nested grids

Later I'm going to describe these in detail if somebody is interested in.

Requirements:

to run:
1. .Net 2.0 Beta 2 runtime
2. WinFX runtime Sept CTP

to compile:
1. VS2k5 Beta 2
2. WinFX SDK Sept CTP

EDIT1

It's precise now:

- uses the allocated size of a file instead of the filesize. These are not the same. The allocated size is the sum of the allocated clusters belongs to that file, simply: allocated size = allocated clusters * cluster size

- uses the CompressedFileSize of that file if that file is compressed.

- shows the Unknown space if there are unreachable files/folders (permission denied) or other unreachable data ($mft)

just a note, if it is not obvious:

Click on the colored bars to navigate through the folders.

EDIT2

New color scheme, looks like a rainbow now

The Sandbox - SlideShow (Avalon, WinFS)

This application shows all your digital photos stored in WinFS. It uses the property animation feature of Avalon for the fade in effect.

How does it work?

There is an ImagePipeline object and there are two threads on the two end of the pipeline. The picture producer thread reads the pictures from the WinFS (picture taken time descent order) and puts those onto the pipeline. Its main task is to keep 5 pictures
on the pipeline always.

The consumer thread gets pictures from the pipeline and sends those to the Avalon controls periodically and starts the fade in animation. Its main task is to ensure accurate timing.

Requirements: WinFX Sept CTP, WinFS Beta 1

EDIT1:

Minor changes, fixes.

EDIT2:

- Migrated to WinFX Sept CTP
- Improvements

EDIT3

- Button visual style improvements

EDIT4

Minor changes:
- own RoutedEvent defined to start the fade-in animation
- minimize button has been implemented

The Sandbox - WinFS Provider for MSH (Monad)

How does WinFS store its data internally? You can find everything within the "\System Volume Information\WinFS" directory.
Follow the instructions here.

You can find the database.mdf+database.ldf files there, and the stream files within the subdirectories.

I have copied those database files to a different location (stopping all the WinFS services is required) and tried to attach to this database via Sql Server Management Studio April CTP. The result is the following error message:

"The database 'Store{1FA0C5E2-2EE1-4C95-8956-801D633CB28C}' cannot be opened because it is version 607. This server supports version 603 and earlier. A downgrade path is not supported. Could not open new database 'Store{1FA0C5E2-2EE1-4C95-8956-801D633CB28C}'.
CREATE DATABASE is aborted. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 948)"

It's really SQL server database files, but not the current available CTP version.

Good news, in my opinion.

The Sandbox - WinFS Provider for MSH (Monad)

This is a very basic plugin for Microsoft Command Shell Beta 1 (MSH aka Monad) to reach WinFS data stores. Each WinFS store appears as a "drive" in MSH. This is a readonly plugin. Sources and binaries are also included.

Requirements:
- WinFX Beta 1 SDK (available
here)
- Microsoft Command Shell Beta 1 (contained within the WinFX Beta 1 SDK)
- WinFS Beta 1 (available to MSDN subscribers)

written in VS2k5 beta 2

There is a screen shot of this whithin the zip file.

EDIT1:

The get-winfsitem Cmdlet supports WinFS OPath queries now. A sample:

MSH> get-winfsitem "Extent(@0).Filter(Container.GetPath() = @1)" ([System.Storage.Item]) "\Users" | ft -a ShellPath, {$_}, ItemSize, SizeX, SizeY, Comments

As seen, the first argument is the OPath query expression and the remaining arguments are the positional parameters for the query expression.

EDIT2:

The get-winfsitem Cmdlet can return any object now. This means, it can write StorageRecord to the pipeline as well, if the OPath query contains "Project"-ing constructs.

MSH> get-winfsitem "Extent(@0).Top(5).Project(FullName.GivenName as gn, FullName.Surname as sn)" ([System.Storage.Contacts.Person]) | ft -a {$_["gn"]}, {$_["sn"]}

EDIT3:

The built-in WinFS Schema assemblies are preloaded correctly now. If you want to preload your custom schema assembly, use one of the following commands:

[Reflection.Assembly]::LoadFile("filepath")
[Reflection.Assembly]::Load("assembly strong name")

You can check the loaded assemblies this way:

[AppDomain]::CurrentDomain.GetAssemblies()

Cool

I am not certain whether these problems are with Avalon or the app. But here goes:

Build a release version and run it out of VS (just to be sure there's no/less debug code).

Now open up task manager and the cpu usage graph. Now run the app and put the continous update mode.

Watch CPU usage graph rise for a minute or so.

You can try minimize the app and the cpu usage stays same.

I have created some performance session with not too big result:
The System.Windows.Media.RotateTransform.set_Angle(float64) function takes longest within the UpdateClockHands function.

I have inserted a line into the UpdateClockHands function which outputs the "n" TimeSpan variable values. UpdateClockHands called normally by 50 msecs as given to the DispatchTimer.Interval property.

I'm not sure, it's a bug or not.

Very nice!
One suggestion: you can use Viewbox element which automatically scales its content so you don't have to handle the scaling yourself.

So the XAML code will look something like that:
<Viewbox Stretch="Uniform">
    <Canvas x:Name="canvas">
...

Really! I learned a new thing. Thanks. I have updated it.

The Sandbox - My first Avalon application: DesktopClock

If you look into the source code you may be surprised how simple this little application is. There’s nothing special. There are lines only and text for the numbers. The most interesting thing of this application is its simplicity. The scaling feature is
about 5-6 lines of coding. The canvas has a scaling transformation and when its size changes the scale factor is updated.

Avalon is a great developing platform. It would be nice to work with Avalon sooner. I can experience its strength while I developed this tiny application. I recommend learning it for everybody.
