Thanks again,

It seems handwriting is still a force to reckon with. This might be why so many different font writing styles ( Gothic, Times New Roman, Garamond ..) developed over the ages.

That said, I hope some employers still value and can assess the efforts of someone who attempts to format his resume electronically.

Cheers to Littleguru for Paintedblue's details and to Christian for his CV example.

Coffeehouse - Taking Resumes to the next level with Microsoft Word

Thanks everybody for your comments and suggestions.

I agree with most of you that it would be difficult for a resume sender to divine how a recipient ( an employer ) felt about his resume - e.g. whether the sender was found to be suitable for the job or had got the necessary qualifications..etc

However if it might be useful for the sender to get some feedback on what features the recipient has clicked on or how the document has been used in general sense. Just as the feedback one might get when using the electronic briefcases functionality with
windows files in general.

As for Blowdart's point, I am trying to get my students into the habit of carefully formatting their work purposively. It is sometimes difficult to sell this idea - many students just feel they should download a snazzily designed template and then cut & paste
stuff in the boxes. Maybe I am old-fashioned and students need only learn how to use templates in this electronic future.

Would it be possible for anyone to put in touch with the Microsoft Word Team working on any of these issues ?

Thanks

Keli

P.S. On a side matter, please could anyone put me in touch with a member called "paintedblue" ?

Coffeehouse - Taking Resumes to the next level with Microsoft Word

Hi members,

I am a high school teacher. I have been developing an exercise with my students where they try to develop a CV ( Resume ) fit for the Electronic age.

I usually start off by giving them a sample of what resumes were in my "day" when most were printed off and posted to prospective employers:-)...I am 35 years old. And then I try to get them to think about what additional features might be incorporated in
21st century resume that lives and is consumed in cyber-space and therefore is probably less likely to be printed.

So the obvious differences would be to try and include
(1) Some multimedia
(2) Alternative ways of contact ( email and blogs ...etc)
(3) Hyperlinks as references to supporting information.
(4) Tooltip or expanded descriptions

As the students explore different layouts strategies and incorporate these added features - the obvious question is how successful has
each feature been after they have launched their resumes into cyber space.

Electronic Briefcase technology allows users to understand/track the modified differences between the main file and its "briefcased" orphan - is it possible that something similar exists for understanding how a resume document was used by its recipients.

Yours truly,

Keli

PS If anyone knows a guy called paintedblue and how I could get in touch with him that would be great ... my email is keli_mutiso@hotmail.com.
Thanks again

Coffeehouse - Simulations using Excel

Hi all,

I modified PaintedBlue's file - BUS_TEST_SIMULATOR.xls and included a frequency distribution ( Histogram ).

Modified - Paintedblue solution
http://www.geocities.com/keli_mutiso/bus_test_simulator_modified_v2_paintedblue.xls

I left my student to figure out how to modify his solution to achieve a similar output. However you will notice the major differences

Student's file - so far
http://www.geocities.com/keli_mutiso/simulations_modified_06june06_version1.xls

I have left him to try and look at paintedblue solution and see if he can incorporate some extra things. The major difference in between the two solutions is that
paintedblue's Bus_test_simulator has one bus stop in the model but my student has several bus stops on route each with different min and max passengers who might want to board the bus.

ok - thanks again. You have been very helpful - any additional comments from the pros will be taken seriously. Please don't hesistate to post your thoughts on the code and the solution.

Coffeehouse - Simulations using Excel

Hi

Maurits is closest to what I was trying to describe. However, on the bus route they are many bustops - so they would 10 or more similar lines on the spreadsheet. Each bustops has an upper and lower limit of passengers who might be wanting to board the bus.
So the simulation will generate different combinations of random numbers of boarding passengers at each bustop. All these different combinations will affect passenger loading times and hence the total travel time over the entire journey.

I tried to paste a copy ( screen print ) of the spreadsheet into this message but I can't do it. Any ideas how ?

Any other way to send you this information ? You then be able to see why I need some code to run the simulation many times so that a frequency distribution of total bus journey travel time can be plotted.
( Normal frequency distributions are the ones that are normally taught in schools - but it is likely that this bus simulations freq. dist. won't be normal - but that's what I want my student to find out)

Keli

PS
How did you make the table, Maurits ?
Is it possible to send file attachments ?
Can we paste images into the messages ?

Coffeehouse - Simulations using Excel

Hi members,

I am a high school teacher ( more details in my profile ).

I have one student who is modelling travel times between bus stops on a particualar bus route. The model assumes that the
Total Travel time between two bus stops is the Passenger loading time plus the Bus travel time between the stops.

The Passenger loading time is dependent on the number of passengers ( No. of passengers ) who wish to board the bus multiplied by the time is takes to serve each of them. This
Serving time per passenger is taken to be a constant ( 10 seconds per passenger, for illustrative purposes ). No considersation is made for the time it takes to off load passengers. ( We assume that the time it takes for off-loading passengers
to leave the bus does not influence the model )

The Bus travel time between bus stops is taken to be a constant. So no consideration for varying amounts of traffic on route or speed of the bus is made.

So in brief,
Total Travel time = Passenger loading time + Bus travel time

where,

Passenger loading time = No. of Passengers * Serving time per passenger

No. of Passengers = RANDBETWEEN(0,15)
(RANDBETWEEN(0,15) generates a random number between some limits )

FINALLY...., ( sorry, if it was too much of mouthful )

The point is I wish to use Excel to run the simulation a 1000 times. If you like refresh the calculations so that new random numbers of passengers will be generated and hence different
Passenger loading times. And then collect a frequency distribution for different classes of observations (
Total Travel times ) in table from which a histogram could be generated using the Excel wizard chart functionality.

How can this be done in code ? Using a subroutine and perhaps a single button to start the simulation on the spreadsheet.. ?

I hope it makes sense. And I hope it is not too much to ask this forum.

Coffeehouse - Taming Windows & Cross referencing

I found all the suggestions had the "multiple open-ended" approach style of Windows. Monchant's piece on OneNote - at least, gave me an idea of a tool that seems could be useful for referencing.

To be honest, I am worn out using the resident Windows file folder system as a storage system. There are huge overheads.

But I keep on telling my students - it is the only place to readily available to them. Although it is crucially inadequate as their files aren't exposed over the Net.

I think a remote storage system with strong organisation and cross-referencing abilities would be a better solution in the long run.
Any ideas ?

Hi Monchant, Cybermagellan, Pace, Pacelevi, DCMonkey, AL_,

Taming Windows

Thanks for all your suggestions. I am now getting success and infact Windows is behaving quite wonderfully - so longer as each Window is not maximised seems to be the key. The "channel 9" reply window is even tracking the position of the cursor and scrolling
automatically left and right for me as I am writing this.
( I am now in an Internet Cafe - I will try it on the network at college ). The

Cross Referencing - Anchors

Monchant, does OneNote automatically create references to only the file in file system ( like a "shortcut" type thing )
or
can we reference more specifically to actual sections and/or paragraghs of text in any standard document regardless of type ( .pdf or .doc ) and location ( on the web or in the file system) by simply "drag and drop" ? Do I understand you correctly ?

I am asking for too much ?

Coffeehouse - Taming Windows & Cross referencing

Hi members,

Taming Windows

I am high school teacher. Often I require my students to read a passage of text from a website or file. I then ask them to summarise what they have read and write some brief notes in a text file or Microsoft Word file. This requires them to work in both files
simultaneously.

Windows doesn't allow them to keep both the passage window and their notes window open at the same time. This is irritating for them and is not healthy for their concentration. It would seem much more productive if both windows could be firmly glued open allowing
the student to gracefully float between source file and his notes file.

Is there any way to force Windows to keep two windows open side by side as the student works ? - i.e. a setting which doesn't allow the windows, some one is working on, to close when they lose focus. This default opening and closing windows as they lose or
come into focus is not very helpful here.

Cross referencing / Bookmarking paragraghs

Developing the scenario above further - noting taking might require
the students to reference particular sections of the text ( paragraphs ) from his notes file to further expand on the points he has noted.

Is it possible for my students to reference a particular or set of paragraphs in a HTML file which do NOT have an associated anchor tag ? Can we get a program that generates anchors for us that we can use to reference in our links ?

Furthermore, how is this same referencing to paragraphs achieved when trying to reference paragraphs in a Word or PDF (adobe ) document ?

Thank you,

Coffeehouse - Automatic examination of files ( Word, Excel, Access )

Hi Sam T,

Thanks for your detailed reply. I have been meaning to email - ran into some difficulties.

To follow on, it looks like you took on this idea seriously. And the next question is a project of this nature really worth it ? Your experiences seem to suggest there is little market demand and therefore funding is required. I am getting it right on that.

I was hoping I would have been re-directed to Microsoft employees or teams requireing similar demands out of these applications. But they all seem strangely quite in this forum ? I don't understand. Any ideas ? Do you get that impression ?

Where are you based ? UK ? or US ?

I simply don't have the time, funding to play around with python, perls and god knows what else out there. It is sad but true.

Thanks again Sam T,

Thanks blowdart,

Would be it possible to program "Word" to inspect a document and just list all the format settings made in the document ? And hence determine whether a student understands a particular method.

And any links or people - you could suggest to me for further information.

Coffeehouse - Automatic examination of files ( Word, Excel, Access )

Hi,

I am a high school teacher. I require my students to demonstrate that they have acquired elementary skills necessary, for example, to format a word processed document. I set a series of exercises where a student must discover how to use a series of formatting
techniques to a large set of standard documents e.g. letters, essays, a newsletter.

My student body has substantially increased over the last three years. And it is increasingly difficult to manually inspect files produced to see whether the student is able to make sound changes to a documents' format.

Is there any way this checking task could be automated ? So that more time can be spent focusing on a student's weaknesses or poor formatting habits ?
