Coffeehouse - There is no end-of-life XP problem

With more and more 64-bit apps being required and more resource requirements, isn't it going to render it all a bit of a moot point soon anyway (if it hasn't already)? My understanding is that 64-bit XP is rubbish, but I admit I haven't used it myself. Heck, my current machine has 32GB of RAM - not even because I use all of it, but because it was only like $200 more than one with 12-16 GB of RAM. Why not?

@vesuvius: I have to take issue with the fanbois statement from above; I've slowly started switching family members onto Windows 8 with absolutely no input from me after installation, and everyone from my great aunt to my grandma to my mother, who can barely open her email without managing to crash her desktop, has had positive things to say. And the number one thing they like best is the "start screen". Number two is the fast bootup times

I think most of us here being overly experienced windows users cuts us out of the mainstream in two ways: Firstly, we're more technically savvy and therefore we can roll with changes easier than others. That's frequently been touted as the reason we're all not really qualified to comment on Win 8, since we're not "normal users." The second reason, however, is that we're so used to how windows works that we are VERY resistant to change (it seems to me). So the very same reason we may feel we're having less trouble adapting to Win8 is the same reason we're resisting the change more than most, because it's "different."

I realize that as a statistical result set my opinion represents practically nothing, but considering all of my most computer illiterate family members picked up Win8 and loved it within an hour, I'm a believer. My opinion almost doesn't matter, because I'm not the "average" user - they are. And they've definitely spoken

Coffeehouse - Very tired

I've often thought about that, Kettch. A lot of times people think management experience means a person will be a competent manager for ANY profession, but I don't think software developers (and software development in general) works the same way. Not only will incompetence be brutal in software development, developers will probably be far less satisfied having to deal with an incompetent boss or one that doesn't understand what software development entails.

From my personal experience/history, this is usually expressed by an incompetent manager asking why a feature can't be done in 2 hours instead of 2 weeks, because they have no fundamental understanding of what it takes to do the job.

Coffeehouse - Windows 8 flops, and Microsoft are to blame

I know this is sort of random for me to throw out here, but I finally purchased Windows 8 for my desktop a few days ago, and I've really, really enjoyed it. The only gripe I have is a minor cosmetic one: I'm not sure how to change (or if I can change) the font color of the title bar on my windows to be a lighter color instead of black.

Other than that, everything I've done has felt intuitive and straightforward. It boots up super fast, and I don't have an SSD so that's saying something these days. The store behaves as I would expect it to, and the search functionality from the "Start" screen is crazy fast and gives me what I expect. I'm a fan

The funny thing is I was going into the purchase with no small amount of dread at what it would be like and how much I was going to have to figure out and re-learn.

Coffeehouse - full flash on metro....

If I'm being honest, I think I've actually put a CD or DVD in my blu-ray drive three times in the last two years. And those were for particularly old games I couldn't get access to elsewhere. Ironically, I've never once put a blu-ray disk in my blu-ray disk drive...

I think the trouble is that web developers want one thing, and "people who do web stuff" want another. It takes all my effort not to roll my eyes when I tell someone I'm a web developer and they say "Oh yeah, I do Wordpress. You can be technical with me." I don't mean to belittle the platform, but they're hardly the same thing.

All the developers I know and myself would be very happy with more strict standards and something that we can rely on to be consistent across browsers. The rest of the web who have the occasional WYSIWYG editors that are poorly made or websites done by people with 10 minutes reading a CSS for dummies want to be able to do the minimum amount of effort required to get their site to look good on the browser they use, and damn the rest of the browsers.

It's a double-edged sword. It's good because the web is so open and pretty much anyone and their dog can have a website. And they frequently do. On the other hand, there's a million websites out there that are made incredibly poorly, but if someone wants to visit that site in their browser of choice and it doesn't look good, it's automatically the fault of the crappy browser.

And while I'm on this diatribe, I should point out that just because a web browser is using Webkit doesn't guarantee it'll look the same as another browser using Webkit. Rarely a week goes by when I'm not having to put some hack in for Safari that doesn't exist in Chrome or vice-versa. And I'm not talking about Chrome windows vs. Safari mac. I'm talking about the same browser on the same platform. They have completely different rendering problems.

Coffeehouse - Australian Pricing Inquisition

Not that I don't sympathize with Australian users, but I'm having trouble understanding this. Are companies not allowed to set prices for their own products? Isn't the whole point that if you're not being competitive nobody will buy your product? What would the ruling be here for the Australian people to get what they want (reasonably priced software)? You can't tell a company it has to sell it for the exact same rates in one country as another. Exchange rates change all the time, plus the cost of importing/exporting, and so on. I don't understand what ruling they could possibly make that would have a meaningful impact on the problem.
