I'm waiting for results not forum feedback Sven. And Win7 is a pretty poor result to me, that is what I'm saying.

And I have given reasons as to why the taskbar is poor here on c9 already. I'd be more helpful in suggestions and feedback but its really best given to those who can actually do the job properly, cleary that is not Microsoft.

Coffeehouse - What UAC Controversy?

Charles said:

Are you guys still talking about UAC? Man... If that's Windows 7's biggest problem, well, do go buy lots of MSFT shares, eh?

By the way, I just wrote an app that will execute with full rights
regardless of the user rights context you're running under. So,it by-passes UAC altogether.... All you have to do is get it on your system in the first place and I'll take it from there. The solution is
really quite simple: Don't run my exe on your computer.

Hey, Jamie. Here's some storyline fodder for your next cartoon:

Luke Smith: Hey!!! UAC is not a security feature. It's a security
hole!!!! OMG!! OMG!!!!!!

Darth: Could you be more.... specific?

Luke Smith: OMG!!! OMG!!!! It's over. It's ALL over! Windows 7 is
not secure!!! You can run code on Windows 7!!!! OMG!!! OMG!!!

Darth: Yes. Of course, you can run code on Windows, young Jedi. Elaborate. What are you talking about?
Quickly. I have much to do.

Luke Smith: OMG!!! OMG!!! UAC can be used by a rogue binary to self-elevate by injecting itself into the security context of a signed, trusted system binary that by-passes UAC checks. OMG!!!
OMG!!!

Darth: Have I shown you my latest Death Ray?

(cue Rush's 2112...)

C

Coffeehouse - Win7=Fonts for the web! ?

jamie said:

Sven Groot said:

*snip*

my c/windows/ font folder is 1 gig.

how big is your drive?

if there were one thing youd WANT windows to install -(after itself) wouldnt it be fonts?

* i have a terrabyte drive - a gig of fonts is a floppy

* and that would make all web devs be able to use 1000's of fonts.... for windows users
(*hey id like for all - but lets get all win users first)

edit WEFT BEHIND

* for people who think having some fonts will hurt your machine - ok - how about... 200 fonts (not 2000)

...200 native fonts..with Windows ...for the WEB

"my c/windows/ font folder is 1 gig."

lol why jamie why? the last place I'd want to dump a lot of fonts is that directory.. whats the point in having applications like Word showing 100's of fonts, just more to sift through. And shipping with 2000 fonts?!?! nutz even 200 is too much... you'll
only find less than creative people using very stylized fonts in a bad way.

If you're using Adobe apps this is far better place to leave extra fonts...

"C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts"

Anyway I support css3 webfonts // messy solutions like using sifr to get fonts to the web aren't good, unlicensed fonts can still be used and its even harder to find out exactly which fonts they are using.. at least with direct linking to raw fonts its out
in the open for anyone to check on valid licensed usage and also see who the original author of that type face is without having to get in contact, its good and there are plenty of free fonts to use in this scenerio.

OTW should get support in all browsers. http://blog.fontembedding.com/post/2009/06/10/New-Web-Fonts-Proposal.aspx

And EOT can be left behind along with IE for all I care.

"Looks like it's everyone with an XBOX 360 avatar... servers down, perhaps?"

heh who cares they looked rubbish anyway

Coffeehouse - Which Windows 7 Should I Buy

punkouter said:

Koogle said:

*snip*

I tried to understand your post there, I really did (read it 3x). But just couldn't. So, which one are you suggesting?

I'm buying Win 7 because I think its time for me and my pc to move on. That's the main reason. The other reason is because my girlfriend hates PC, and electronic devices and reluctant to use them (except the washing machine, microwave and her cellphone,
i guess). She's just like my mom. But since IT is where I make a living and I have passion for it, I want her to understand and at least know computers better. And that requires me to get a nice easy to use OS, which what i hope Windows 7 will be. On the other
side, I need to work on that PC also. So, as you can see I need a Windows version that supports English and Japanese seamlessly (if possible, without much problem at least).

So, again koogle, which one do you recommend? and why?

"I tried to understand your post there, I really did (read it 3x). But just couldn't. So, which one are you suggesting?"

I'm sorry... my post wasn't there to help you choose a Win7 version to buy you shouldn't have needed to read it 3x to see that.

you want to be recommended a win7 version to buy when its not even out yet.. very eager aren't you? maybe just try the Win7rc and get Jap MUI pack for testing, it will be a 'testing' experience is all I can say.

". The other reason is because my girlfriend hates PC"

shhhe hates PC .. blasphemy! maybe she just hates Windows? .... you could try offering her Mac? once you go Mac, you never come.. back? or so I've heard before

"Don't mind Koogle, he makes little sense to anyone except himself."

heh.. that's because understanding me would require you to not be a satisfied with noob sh/t Sven. It would also require me to write everything single detail and reason behind each point I make and why I make it and suggestions on how it should have been
done better.. and that would take more time than I care to spend helping Windows be less sh/t, when MS cleary only makes stuff for the noob, not the poweruser because that would actually require more effort....its just a good thing Microsoft has customers
like punkouter to buy Win7... while me, I can wait this out until MS does eventually put something together worthy of upgrading to.

"decision engine" makes me laugh aswel

"When you validate a marketing weasel, an angel dies."

"I love the Bing image of the day"

if a link to desktop size version was provided aswel, I'd go check it out

"Suddenly ads really are targeted at what I search."

Some might say that is useful.. but otherwise this can also help http://userscripts.org/scripts/review/29078 ofc there is still that ip address

"I found a neat Bing trick (easter egg?) that somehow improves search results. Search for "google" (weird word, don't ask me what it means) and then click the first result. Now search for what you are looking for. It's a strange easter egg for sure."

..it would be funny if Bing just got its results from Google anyway

Coffeehouse - Which Windows 7 Should I Buy

I don't really have a dilemma.. but I am waiting for an OS update that is actually worth moving onto since Windows XP..

my expectations are very reasonable..

-I don't settle for nub sh/t changes & lack of decent improvements when small third party developments offer better f#cking improvements visually/usability & customization wise than an OS that goes in development for years by developers who don't seem to
have the slightest intention of making actual workflow improvements to the desktop...instead just make it worse and include any old sh/tty feature so long as it can made to look good to the nubs.
-Existing shell extensions must still work or become irrelevant because of better built in enhancements (fat chance)
-Hardware like audio cards must deliver at least the same level of performance and features without an increase in CPU usage when its only for pointless sh/t, if you're gonna make a fecking change then at least introduce it when you've worked on it and made
it more worthwile!

-Aero sh/te Themes and that pile o'sh/t dwm.exe process needs a good kicking, with better control over it. ie disable thumbnail processing etc
-I'd like the 'Explorer' and everything assiociated with it to get an actual F#*^K!NG IMPROVEMENT! and out with the crap.
-I will not use ugly as f#ck noob looking prompts like the replace file dialog, useless waste of space status bars etc etc
-Things like the task manager, file transfers, control panel, startmenu, should be more useful and better designed etc
-Easier tweakability/customization and options should be built in and provided for more things, as Windows default settings SUCK for just about everything!

It seems like I'm asking for sooo much already // and those where just some of my reasonable expectations, wasn't even a mention of better profile setup, control and security etc for those that don't want to go the full on system drive bitlocker route.

Coffeehouse - NY Post: FEAR GRIPS GOOGLE

For me to use Bing, they'd need to drug me, tie me to a chair, play me awful music out of jamie's music collection, cuff my hands next to a keyboard and have me watch tv with a constant drivel of commercials inbetween shopping channels, travel shows....
it might work until I escape

Or they could just make the searching there more useful.

Its way to geared for the newbie, I mean the results automatically assume you've searched the wrong thing and inserts results of a term more popular. See where as Google will get you your results for what you've searched and provide you with a hint that hey
look maybe you meant this search term. Bing will take your search term and because only a noob would likely be using its search engine first place... it will automatcially show results that won't have anything to do with what you'd search for.. but oh look
at that little bit of text "Show just the results for "what I typed in the first place!!!"..... unless you start your search with + infront.. but hey if they didn't suck on customization and control over these issues it wouldn't be an issue.

They really should make more use of that inpage loading advanced panel!!!.. provide more options like w3bbo said biasing your results to specific areas.. making it easier. me I i'd go with biasing towards discussions boards/comments.. and making it easier
to do things like date filtering etc

Anyway its good to see something has got Google worried, they've been sitting pretty for too long in the search department, and most enhancement to the results page have been through other addons etc.. where have the improvements been BIG g, other than meh
favicon changes.

ps. bing image results page sucks becase of the constant scrolling, they should provide the option for letting you decide how many results per page instead.

"Ten seconds for a cached start is still slower than an uncached start of 2 seconds... just saying."

-what lies? 10 sec uncached! not cached...and you'll be closer to the truth, but if thats not enough, 10sec for good stuff, vs 2sec for rubbish(can inc. that junk called chrome in this side aswel).. and thats just startup speed, what about your actual browsing
session and delays incurred through the a crap ui, page rendering, control, lack of decent enhancements etc.. you choose.. oh..you chose fail!

anyway its probably best you don't debate on taste, you're defending IE against Firefox (which is albeit carried by its extensions and addons) ...but its still a no win situation for you

"I've been using Firefox but there are a couple of things that bug me. One thats getting on my nerves is that often when you close Firefox, it really doesn't shut down. Then if you try to run it again, even sometimes even after a minute, you get a stupid
message box saying 'Firefox is already running'."

Well you didn't say what version, did you even do a search for "Firefox is already running"? , and if you're closing FF and wanting to open up again straight after like after installing/testing an addon/theme etc, then you're doing it wrong..because that
is where you use restart instead.

Anyway I've got plenty of annoyances to do with FF and its inabilities including some of its addons, its far from perfect, but right now its better than the rest have to offer when you add it all up.

Koogle, why then are you using it? constructive criticism is a good thing, saying well, it's IE, its MS, therefore it sucks, oh and it's a massive hole for security problems, doesn't really help. Examples. real test cases might help. This is a microsoft
site, they might listen if you'd help them rather than just shout you're sh*t loudly.

Anyway in a fantastically helpful way any ideas why IE8 on win7rc today everytime I go to a new website IE give me a wonderful internet connection error, diagnose here, if I press F5, the site loads fine. An issue with the phishing check taking too long?

.. I don't use 'IE', but I sometimes have to..and thats the annoying bit ... its the only reason I even bother commenting about IE, its like letting off steam.... and constructive criticism is generally a waste of time here if its not to do with c9 etc,
you need to go through the right 'channels' if you want to provide feedback to particular teams on getting them to sort their sh/t out... which is actually quite a pointless endevaour.

"I hate Firefox, because it takes 2 minutes to start and you complain about 2 seconds"

2mins!? ... try ~10seconds with 60+ extensions, and much better control ... vs. starting up IE...which even if it started up instantly like chrome wouldn't mean diddly sh/t because it only offers a crap ui & experience all round really. - "strange world" indeed

looks like it should belongs on the desktop really, oh thats bin done.

your photos page only goes to fakebook ? ..might want to look for some other css styles to use with stylish(ff addon) make some of those other sites fit in better with your all black ui. If you add flickr, I could donate you the best black flickr css, maybe.

I'm now thinking of something similar too, only I plan have it read my mind, while my eye movements provide gesturing control...and it will look like perfection with all the customization and control a user could have want. yes
