The problem with it being at the sides is that you can't see the button labels. Suppose you've got 20 documents open, all with the same icon... how do you know which is which without hovering over each one for 3 seconds?

Well, I DON'T usually have 20 documents open, 10-15 is about my maximum (all IE to various sites), but there are a few characters visible to help identify the document. Additionally, I am able to see all of the QuickLaunch items and can use them for Drag&amp;Drop
 when needed. How would you do that if the item you needed was hidden by the double arrows (&gt;&gt;) ?</p>]]></description>

		<description><![CDATA[<p>I use the Links toolbar to help keep my desktop tidy.&nbsp; It keeps all my stuff just two clicks away, organized in a nice neat menu structure!&nbsp; I call that pattern 'pigskin'; a bit less distracting than images, but not quite a solid color, either....<br>
