Defrag: So You Just Got a New PC
Jan 04, 2012 at 2:40 PM@Kevin: You're probably preaching to the choir here. We agree. As for your comment about 'come on Microsoft, don't you see this?" Sure, we are PC users too. That's why all the machines sold at a Microsoft Store come without third party installs. But we don't build PC's - OEM's do. I'm glad we allow them some liberties in their own sandbox. Sometimes the software they include on a machine is very helpful, look at the custom images that Newtek uses for their Tricaster. They couldn't do that if we didn't allow them to put together a custom image.
Defrag: So You Just Got a New PC
Jan 04, 2012 at 2:32 PM@dtower: HA! Sure. So it was a typical home PC that I had built myself. I had the case open and one of the drives was in the wrong spot so I I wanted to move it to the bay below where it was. I *knew* I should have turned the PC off, but I didn't. I unscrewed the drive, pulled it out, as I moved it to the spot below it, I saw the tiniest spark gap between the hard drive and the frame of the PC. It was fried and I was never able to recover anything from it again. I lost original files for logos, invoices, scans, all kinds of really critical data. It was such a loss of data that it really hit me hard.
I'm happy to say almost 15 years later I've not lost a single bit of data, knock on silicon.
Defrag: So You Just Got a New PC
Jan 04, 2012 at 1:27 PM@wkempf: If you want a machine like that, just buy one at a Microsoft Store. They use "Microsoft Signature" machines in the stores. (i.e. no "crapware") [thanks Andrew Richards for the link]
To your statement about how you shouldn't have to uninstall apps; my full ascent. I absolutely agree, but the economics of OEM margins and the freedom allowed OEM's means they can do it if they like. Best practice is to speak with your wallet.
Defrag - Unplayable Media Center files, Missing RAM, Closing Cores
Dec 05, 2011 at 10:14 AM@dtower:Tried that last night and it didn't work. Also shot a short video of it for Gov to help troubleshoot.
Defrag - Unplayable Media Center files, Missing RAM, Closing Cores
Nov 30, 2011 at 2:30 PM@windev: That's kind of the opposite experience I've got, it works best when very close (~3'). I'll try Gov's and see if it's just a bad unit. Thanks.
Defrag: Disable Show Desktop, Hide User Accounts, Accurate Energy Usage
Oct 26, 2011 at 10:14 AM@MagicAndrew1981: Gov already has his correction written!
@WinDev: It certainly doesn't work as planned. We'll talk about it when we shoot the show tomorrow morning.
@TrickyDickie: 1) Thanks for the heads up. 2) We use Samsung monitors in the studio. I believe the center one is a 55" 7000 Series LCD, the two side ones belong to Clint Rutkas from Coding for Fun. I believe those are 46" 8000 Series, but I can check next time I'm over. You might notice half way through the show the one behind Gov went out. We have some really long runs of HDMI and one started acting up about 15 minutes in so we just cut it.
Update: The two side monitors in the studio are Samsung Model code: UN55C6800UFXZA, the center monitor is a Samsung PN58B550T2FXZA.

Check It Out: Mouse Without Borders
Sep 28, 2011 at 10:29 AM@ahmed: You want our studio camera's background? Sure, here's one we use for Channel 9 Live that I used to make the camera BG's: http://imgur.com/9ZaL1 If you want one of the ones from a camera, you'll have to pick which one. There are cameras 1 through 3 and a "screencap" BG.
Jensen Harris Walks Us Through the Windows 8 UI
Sep 15, 2011 at 1:45 PM@Fabulous_Fadz: I just used your question about left handed users on Channel 9 Live. If you missed it live, keep an eye out for my interview with Sam Moreau on WinUI. It should be up in a day here.
Thanks,
Larry
