Coffeehouse - Outlook 2003 ~ New Message Window

There is in my opinion a design flaw in Outlook 2003, that being that the 'New Message' window is a window and not part of the main pane like all the other items (read messages, browse folders etc). Does anyone have a method or trick for attaching the
'New Message' window in where read would normally appear?

So I can -

Browse, Read, Reply, Type, Send --
All without having to switch windows or move around.

Coffeehouse - MSN Messenger makes me :(

MSN Msg 7 (beta) screenshots *apparently..

Here are a list of the expected upcoming features!

- Winks: Winks allow you to send kisses, hearts and all sorts of silly cartoons to your contacts.

- Nudge: Nudge allows you to send a "shake" to your contact. Both your own and your contacts MSN Messenger window will shake, much like how Internet Explorer windows shake using the correct javascript.

- Download packs: Download packs will allow users to grab winks/emoticons/display pictures and backgrounds straight from MSN. As these currently don't work we were unable to test them.

- Games: Chess Club, Bankshot Billiards Club are included if you're a Instant Games Clubhouse member. Standard Checkers/Solitaire Showdown/Bejeweled/Minesweeper Flags and Tic Tac Toe are still included.

- Activities: Activities allow you to share files, calendars, photos and perform tasks such as remote assistance.

- Deluxe Display Pictures: Although these are unavailable it seems like MSN are going to supply animated display pictures.

The build in question is 7.0.0205 and carries the beta tag throughout. The main MSN Messenger window is
redesigned to show your display picture and includes the ability to scroll through tabs. There's no new options in the main options menu but you can change the position of the tab icons. When a contact signs in using MSN Messenger 6 or above you
get the contact's display picture on the sign in toast. Custom emoticons are still the same, they still
do not animate or allow animated GIFs etc. Check out the screenshots below for more features and the general user interface.
MSN Messenger 7.0 is expected to be released into beta on November 11th this year with a general
'MSN Messenger Wave 10' release as late as February 2005.

Also, 3Degrees has finally been incorporated into the
MSN Messenger client. This allows users to listen to music together and
share photos for example.

Here are some of the new graphical changes which have been reported, as commented by
Rolando:

- New user interface: Although the conversation windows haven't changed much, the
'sign-in' and 'contact list' windows have had some nice new changes. The
display picture is now shown in the contact list window as well, and the
menubar is now disposable. You will also see an away or busy status icon
beside the contact's icon. An MSN web search bar has been included at the bottom.

- Options dialog: The options dialog has had some major improvements. You won't see
icons anymore and the menu is now a list placed on the left of the dialog.

- New installer: Some nice graphical changes have been noted in the installer as well where you can see a new
blue msn guy beneath a green one. This logo has been noted a lot lately.

Coffeehouse - Microsoft's Longhorn Failure Is Linux's Chance

Gotta agree. You notice it is the people generally that have never had to maintain a Linux system or have never used a Linux desktop for an extended period that have the most to say about how wonderful it is.

I myself have been in dependency hell and have also had to deal with the erratic desktops (both KDE and Gnome). They are both user-unfriendly if you ask me. I don't expect them to be like Windows but they don't even stick to any way of doing things.. I mean
the file open/save dialogs are rarely the same between three applications.

I also find the desktop slow to react to my needs, as in if I click something I have to wait a few seconds for it to react on a high speed machine which gets under my skin.

The graphics do look nice.. but I don't care about graphics, I care about usability and speed. Or at least speed up to a point.

It is almost impossible to setup your graphical desktop without opening a shell at least once.

Coffeehouse - Microsoft, innovation, security and 9/11

I think Microsoft's shift towards security is long due and has very little to do with 9/11. I mean look at the MS code base that has been getting worse and worse if they don't act now and start securing it then it is going to continue getting worse.

What important features do you need? If you just want 'features' all your going to get is forced ideas, things just for the sake of it. Really good ideas present themselves. And performance is always important but I don't think they have shifted away from performance
or at least not that I've seen any evidence of.

The fact that America is on a security crack down and then Microsoft does the same is purely coincidence. Microsoft would have had to switch to security sooner or later and I have never heard it suggested that these 'terrorists' are going to attack using people’s
home computers.

This is a guess.. but if the Mac version of IE uses the local GDI equivalent (rendering engine) and it supports PNG or is updated more often I could see how that could happen.

Re-read, I didn't discribe the Linux effort as a joke. I discribed the development platform as a joke. And I was directing that at the X11 development platform, not in general.

Coffeehouse - Microsoft's Longhorn Failure Is Linux's Chance

Jamie, thanks for the spaced version.

If you assume he and or eWeek are unbiased journalists then I can see how you could be upset but in reality journalists
CAN be biased if they want and that is their job.

In this case he is discussion how the Longhorn thing could be good for the Linux Desktop’s market share.

I don't agree, I mean Linux doesn't exactly have WinFS capabilities yet. I think people, especially the media way over-estimate how fare along the Linux desktop is. I consider it around the Windows 95/OS2 age in comparison. To think that it is anywhere near
2k/XP is just insanity.

The Linux Desktop is just a mish-mash of various hacks, some dating back a few years. Firstly I consider the construction a security risk and more so I think it is inefficient and user-unfriendly.

It is barley a model in any respect and the development platform is a joke.
