Coffeehouse - Should you pay for Office 2007 Beta's?

Personally, I don't see any problems with the cost, after all it is $1.50.
At this stage, most of the new 'beta' testers are probably 1st adpoters for their relative enterprises trying to test the upcoming release for compatibility, migration, and training issues.
If ther is any benefit, or it they see an upgrade in a 12-month timeframe, then the amount is truly negligible.

I, of course, just disable the add-in in order to continue my efforts but it is a load of crap in the end. I'm not proud of how I get the job done but it is all MS has left me with.

I guess I could just activate every test box I build. Yeah, in a week my XP activations would get bumped to phone activation and eventually the activation people would question what was going on. Actually, while I can't find it at the moment, MSDN docs recommend
you not activate if you are using an OS install for testing less than 90 days. That's just peachy if you want an RTM, pure SP1 or SP2 machine. No fully up to date boxes, especially no non-critical patches. Not without activating / passing WGA.

Yes, AU will pull criticals but who wants to wait on AU to pull what you need, not to mention you might only want a certain combo of updates... or non-criticals.

IMO it's another finger from MS.

Not as bad as it sounds, bro.

If you get the MSDN patch updates alerts, you can download the patched separately.

It is not easy, but at our Labs, we use VirtualPC to try to keep the stress level low.

Coffeehouse - EU vs. Microsoft a personal fight?

This is basically the same thing the EU did to another Seattle company, Boeing.

Back then, Airbus was in the formative stages, and Boeing was in the process of purchasing McDonnell Douglas, shutting down the DC-8/DC-9/MD-80/MD-90 lines, and signing airlines to Boeing-only fleets.

What did the EU do? Step in, and argue that iBoeing's actions were somehow uncompetitive.

This, from the same governments that had all their 'aerospace' companies sucking at their respective national teets while nurturing Airbus Industrie (now Airbus SAS)!

Boeing folded like a limp noodle, Airbus grew stronger, and the rest is history.

I'm glad Microsoft IS fighting this. I know the Eurograts would definitely like to replace Microsoft with a 'local hero', but Linux ain't him.

Coffeehouse - WSJ on Longhorn engineering processes

It is commendable that a company as large as Microsoft would turn on a dime with a flagship product.

It is especially notable that Longhorn (before the 'reset') was not shipped and discarded.

In this day and age, with the expanding number of OSs for x86 systems, MSFT cannot afford a body blow linked to either a buggy or useless product.

Not suffering from arrogance or hubris, the top executives made the right call.

It is interesting that Bill Gates kept thinking of the morale of the current employees of the company during what must have been a gut-wrenching change in their (programmers/engineers) way of doing business. Scratch that, it IS a sea change in the Microsoft
way of engineering their products.

Hopefully, we all would benefit: IT with a more robust product, and end users with security, reliability, and of course, more eye candy.

Coffeehouse - Bush floods New Orleans....

Don't blame the President. NOLA has a mayor, and a governor 50 miles away in Baton Rouge!

My problem is that we always seem to wait out the tragedy, then fashion a response.

Why?

Why wasn't there a strategic plan in place to evacuate indigent people before the disaster? It is not like if
Katrina happened immediately!

Why wasn't there a greater mobilization of rescure teams for a proactive stance on the (then-impending) disaster.

Now, supposedly, Carnival is being contacted to see if ships are available for rescue functions.

Why weren't Naval and Coast Guard ships put on alert? Heck, we've been on alert since 2001; they could as well!

If that was true, then how did the iPod become a hit in the first place, besides the catchy name?

25 songs is equal to about 2 albums worth of songs. I've discussed the similar issue with friends about how you really only ever carry around like 2 to 3 albums of songs. They remind me that they like variety in songs so they keep more than just 2 to 3 albums
on their iPods, regardless of whether they actually listen to all songs at a time.

If you're on a trip, 2 to 3 albums can get rather boring. You need to be able to store all songs that you would listen to for the rest of the trip. Having to carry around flash media doesn't resolve the issue as it only substitutes carrying CDs. You still
end up carrying additional media.

Sarcasm, my man!

Why, just why, would anyone get a phone with an artificial 25-song limit?

And I was ribbing Apple for the low uptake ratio of songs sold/iPod.

Furthermore, between my wife and I, we have 3 iPods, but I don't think they're manna or a gift from Olympus!
