How simple is the world I come from? Well where I come from, someone spits in your face, you cut their throat. So yeah, its pretty straight forward.

Back during the American revolution, I believe the American "freedom fighters" could have been considered, by outsiders, as terrorists of the day: an armed uprising against a government.

Now a days, armed fighers are called "freedom fighters" if they're on "our" side, and terrorists if they're not. The US currently supports (in our war on terrorism) the government of Indonesia, despite the tens of thousands killed, starved, and/or tortured..
After Iraq, under Sadam, used chemical weapons (Reagan or Bush I Presidency), the US publically condemned they're actions, yet sent a special envoy, lead by none other than Donald Rumsfeld, to Iraq to basically say ("we had to say that. We really support you!").
All of this was uncovered by the Freedom of Information act.

Kind of interesting how we change our definitions of friends and foes, isn't it?

It used to be that Americans fought for freedom from government intrusion, fought for government accountability, and demanded proper representation and oversight of government actions.
Now, it seems like the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, along with the spirit in which they were written, are now technicalities to get around. Sadly, less people are concerned about this..

Coffeehouse - Microsoft's 2006 according to Cringely

I'd question the "sucking at security" bit. Not that Microsoft doesn't have security flaws, but it's not alone. Another point is that "it only takes one unpatched flaw to compromise a system". We'll find more flaws in Windows, as we will in all other systems.

I'd take a "wait and see" approach with Vista. I think it will be great, and not readily adopted.

As to the "Do we really need windows", I think that will be a question people will start asking themselves. Firefox is a great example of that. Also, as more companies switch from Office to something else (say OO), people will start wanting to use that at home.
Shoot, my wife has a PC only because she uses a PC at work. She said she'd rather have a Mac, but wants to stay consistent with what she works with. Makes some sense to me.

Time will tell. But one thing I will predict, It will "not be the year of Linux on the Desktop". Every year someone says that, and it never happens.

Coffeehouse - Question for C9 team and others.

People,

Thanks for your input. Both points are good.. But, not much of it (sans Scobles' "Is it being used") is measurable. I wholeheartedly agree Quality should be built into the process, fewer defects, etc...

But, how does one measure "quality" in a contract? Everyone who has done software building as a consultant (internally or externally to their company) has requirements that often say something like "it should be "high quality" or "Quality should come first",
etc. My problem is if I get assigned a task that has a contact in which Quality is of primary concern, how do I measure that? Some thoughts:

      * I can't measure bugs, per se. I have to find them either during or after the software is being built. I can't have a "99% defect free" clause in a contract given to me. People could log erronously defects. And, what, exactly, is a defect? A bug found?
Or a bug not found? (If a tree falls in the woods and no one hears it.. etc.)

       * Is Quality really a broad category in which reliability, scalability, usability, etc., reside? If I achieve everything under it, it's of "high quality"?

      * Use Cases completion? How many use cases can I work though with the software? (Ideally it's 100%, but sometimes they need to be curtailed or limited, due to time / cost contraints).

Has anyone else come up with measurable metrics? (That might be redundant.. but I wanted to stress the importants of measurement).

Robert, how do you and the C9 team measure, "Do you like it"? If you go to Slashdot, I'm sure you'll find plenty of negative press on it (I seem to remember a few links from /. to C9). People who routinely use C9 probably like it (otherwise, why would you use
it? We don't *need* to be here.. In fact, we all should be working.. ) What does C9 do to measure how much we like it?

For the record, and the metric, I like C9.

Coffeehouse - Question for C9 team and others.

I was wondering. Too often in building software, we say that we want to build better software. Usually, this can be measured with metrics like Scalability, Reliability, Response Times, etc.. But, Quality is one of those things that is difficult to measure.
Yet, quality is essential to all of us developers in order to say our software is a success. It used to be that people (wrongly) measured lines of code. Defect counts used to be used, but in the absence of decent test cases, this number can be artificially
low. When defined as "an absence of bugs in the code", no one can measure what hasn't been found.

My Question, how does the Channel 9 team members measure quality? Anyone else care to elaborate on their experience with measuring quality?

*Note* I'm not looking for trolls, or jabs at Microsoft or others about how their code has laughable quality. I'm looking for good metrics to take and learn from.

As long as everybody can hang in there for 25 more years (how long it will take to grow the trees back), we'll be fine and then all these silly arguments can just go away.
Only if I can drive around in a 1970's behemoth, with Whale-skin hubcaps, getting 3 miles per gallon, smoking a cigar at the same time.

In America, of course, you can sue someone for practically anything, including name calling. The trick is to "win" the case..

One example of that is the infamous woman who sued McDonalds for the spilt coffee. She originally was awarded millions of dollars (which most people remember), until the appeal overturned that judgement by far (which almost no one remembers).

IANAL, but Beer would have to show some sort of quantifiable loss. namecalling in itself isn't a crime, and being the fact that Beer often defended himself vociferously, it's clear he was not incapacitated.

Beer is an attention seeker. Either he'll be back, once he needs some more attention, or he'll find attention some other way.

Coffeehouse - Help Finding a Video Link someone posted..

Someone a while back submitted a video, done by Microsoft, addressing a crowd ( I *think* in the UK) about the Gotchas of Linux, specifically, what you're getting into when developing on it (Which version, who supports, who upgrades, etc.)

It was very articulate and even posed areas where Microsoft is inferior to Linux (those who need to tweak the OS, FIle System, etc.)

Does anyone remember this? Anyone re-supply the link?

Does anyone know of a program which will let you run an application within a specific control:

Image like a Panel which is really a "window" for an application. Kinda like how Virtual Server has an Active X control which is a "window" into a virtual machine, I'm looking for one which will host an application.
Ever hear of this? Is it possible?

I saw a few things listed in January 2006, I just wonder how the project is going.
