The NSKUs of Windows Vista are shipped without Windows Media Player 11, and without any ability to install it even if you want it. Earlier this year Microsoft released the NSKU Media Restore Pack, which restored media capability to the N editions of Windows Vista. This update was provided through Windows Update, and was only avaliable to 32-bit versions of Vista N.

Does anyone know when an update will be provided for 64-bit versions of Vista N?

I'm beginning to worry that they will never release it, and working without it is extremly difficult. It's not that I miss Windows Media Player, the problem is that a lot of the programs I use need Media Player files to run properly.

Also, since I doubt anyone can tell me when a 64-bit version of the restore pack will be released, does anyone have any ideas for a work around to get it installed without a restore pack?

Hey, I have about 3000 fonts, but each is in a different folder. I need a way in which to install them all as fonts without having to go through each folder.

Is there a way to remove 3000 folders and put all the files in one folder. I noticed that when you delete a folder it says: "Delete folder and all its contents?". Can you; "Delete folder and keep its contents"?

Alterternatively is there a way to install fonts by dragging folders into the fonts control panel?

Is it possible to develop games for the XBox 360 without buying the development kit? I mean, I've heard that you can transfer files to and from the XBox to the PC, so what is stopping you transfering a game file.

This isn't for commercial use, just for experimentation purposes. Would it not help new talent to get into the gaming industry, and isn't that what people want?

If not, is it the same story for PS3 and PSP? I can't see anyway for a person like me to even think about giving it a try without making a major commitment (getting myself employeed by a gaming company).

I can't say I'm much of a gamer myself. However, at the local cinema today was a large room filled with about 50 XBOX 360. I got a good 30 mins playing on them and I am amazed by the graphics and the overall gaming experience.

Has anyone else tryed one out?

I played a whole host of games, NBA, Call Of Duty, Gun, King Kong, Burnout (I think?), some football game and Perfect Zero (I think?).

Wow. Well done Microsoft.

I know how I'm spending my saturday. ;)

I think someone has mentioned this before, but nothing came of it, if I remember correctly. Are you considering adding a quick reply box to the bottom of threads?

I'm sure that it would be a valued enhancement as it seems that about 90% of posts don't need any of the advanced features provided with the current reply system.

I'm not sure whether this is a popular idea though, a poll maybe?

Over the past few days I've been making a fairly lightweight image resizer just to get back into C# again. It retains aspect ratio based on a width or a height value that can be defined in percent or pixels.

It all seems to be working fine except for one problem:

I am using the

Bitmap.Save(Bitmap originalImage, Size size);

method and whenever I scale to below around the 50% mark the image is distroted and any text is impossible to read.

Is this due to the Bitmap.Save() function? I have decided that there cannot be an error in my 'Size' calculation because the final image is in the right ratio.

Here is an example of the problem:

Here is my code:

decimal height_dec = (initial_image.Height / initial_image.Width) * pixelsize_numericbox.Value;

MessageBox.Show(height_dec.ToString());

It returns 0 in the message box, even when I know that initial_image.Height has a value of 400 and initial_image.Width has a value of 600, pixelsize_numericbox.Value has a value of 300.

Why is it not returning 200?

Hey Channel 9,

For the next few months I'm going to be using a Linux (Fedora Core 4 to be precise). I have very little experience with Linux and I just want to know what I'm missing.

Anyway, I was hoping some of you may know of some Linux alternitives to some of the Windows applications that I use regularly.

- Dreamweaver
- 3D Max
- Matlab
- Outlook

I think I know of alternatives for all the rest of the applications I use. I was also hoping that you could tell me the most popular C++ compilers/IDE's for Linux?

I know that I could have posted this in a Linux forum, but as a Windows user moving to Linux I thought this forum would be perfectly appropriate.

Hello everyone,

About three months ago I reformated my HDD and about a week later discovered that Java was not working, tryed this: http://www.java.com/en/download/help/testvm.xml got a red X. I thought if I just installed it everything would be fine.

However after many repetitions of un-installung and re-installing and searching the internet I couldn't find anything except websites telling me to change my proxie settings, I tryed this, but had no success.

I have no idea what would be causing this, I've had it running on this machine before with no problem. I'm not sure if we have a Java wizz here on C9 but if so I can post the exeptions that I get in the Java console when visiting the above link.

I hope one of you can help me, it is getting to be a major problem! I need to fix it once an for all.

Is there and easy way in which to insert boxed comments in Visual Studio without messing about with astericks formations and forward slashes?

If not is there a tool to do it easily?

Failing this how would I go about building an addon for Visual Studio?

It may seem like a minor annoyance to have to do this, but I like to comment my code pretty thoroughly, and wasting time on this is starting to drive me up the wall.

I was wondering if anyone could provide a link to a tutorial on how to create my own Word wizards similar to the ones currently provided by Word (i.e. Fax Wizard, Letter Wizard, Pleading Wizard...).

I am not looking for a tutorial on how to save a document as a template.

I was hoping I can do this by editing one of the current wizard files, rather than writing it with Visual Studio.

I have already searched the internet.

Hi Channel 9,

I have two folders in 'My Music' folder. When in one of them I can arrange my music by name, track, duration, year, artist, album etc.

However, in the other all I can arrange my music by is name, size, type and modified.

It's like in one of the folders it knows it's all music, and in the other it is treating it as a generic file collection.

I was just wondering how you tell windows that a folder contains music so you can sort it by these extra methods.

I'm not sure if this has already been mentioned, but I was wondering if there were any plans to add functionality to the 'Add Topic' page so that we can (optionally) tag our topics.

While I'm sure many people will choose not to tag their topics I know that I would spend those extra few seconds and make the site just that little bit more orginised.

By the way, I love the new design, great work C9. :D

ASP .net vs PHP [ASP .net vs PHP]

I'm coming to the end of my hosting deal and am in the middle of deciding whether to choose a different deal or just continue with my current deal.

My main reason for switching would be to get MS Hosting to use ASP .net rather than PHP.

The PHP advantages are (disadvantages of ASP .net):

* I already have extensive knowledge in PHP
* The current system uses PHP

The disadvantages are (advantages of ASP .net):

* I can't use Visual Studio to code PHP, so I'm stuck with either Dreamweaver or Notepad (Frontpage is not an option)

* I'm not sure about this one, but if I decide to write a windows application in C# that connects with my site will it be easier to do if I'm connecting with a .net languages (ASP .net) rather than PHP?

What does everyone else think about the two languages, and which one would you choose (taking into consideration what I've already said and also the higher price of MS Hosting)

I was hoping that one of you could perhaps explain to me what the differences are between C++ and Micorosft Visual C++. Is it actually a different language? Or rather just a different way of using or writing the language?

Also is it possible to compile C++ in the Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Visual C++ compiler.

Since I re-installed Windows XP, any website that is supposed to be embedded inside its application (i.e. in the Visual Studio installation) opens up in a separate Internet Explorer windows and leaves a blank space in the application.

Anyone come across this before, what should I do?

Hey,

I've been off the forums for a few days while I've been re-installing Windows XP. After installation I installed Service Pack 2 via automatic updates. Now here comes the problem:

When I plugged in my USB devices I got a message telling me that they used high speed USB (i.e. USB 2.0) and that since I did not have USB 2.0 drivers they would run through a slower connnection.

I'm aware that USB 2.0 support came with Service pack 1, but I also thought that Service Pack 2 would include this, and that their would be no need to install Service Pack 1 aswell.

Now what should I do?

Live8 is well underway as I write this post. So far there have been some brilliant performances, particularly by U2. I was also suprised to see Bill Gates! I knew he was a large charity giver, but I wasn't aware the he would be making an appearance at Live8.

Has anyone else been watching, any comments? Think it will work?
