If you are using IE8 and W7 this might help:

Q: Whenever I click on the .wmv file in IE8 it fails. Do following to restore functionality.

A: Next time your click on .wmv link, it will open it in WMplayer:

I am talking about the 1st video in the series.

That itself is 300 megs.

 

It could take few seconds & less money in US to download it.

For me, I am paying per the downloaded bytes & hence this request.

if we take this lecture for example: http://channel9.msdn.com/shows/Going+Deep/C9-Lectures-Brian-Beckman-Covariance-and-Contravariance-in-Physics-1-of-1/

Original file submitted to us was 1.04GB. Encoded wmv file: 441Mb.  A bit bigger than 2:1 ratio is acceptable. But i don’t think we can’t go any further on these videos. Our encoders calculate size/bitrate/etc automatically. Short of re-encoding this for you by hand, there is no solution for you request. Sorry about that.

I understand that there was one video done as smooth streamed silverlight.  The rest of the videos on the site are still not smooth streamed including the new ones. I would have though that you guys would have started encoding all videos going forward with smooth streaming and then go back sloly but surely and re-encode all older videos. You guys have always been open with us so feel free to be open about these plans. This feature doesnt have to be developed like Win 7 underpromise/overdeliver.  I think most people on this site would rather be a part of the conversation.

Actually we started encoding for smooth streaming while back, so there will be no need to re-encode "old videos" for smooth streaming.

Video’s will be available as soon as the new player will be available to play them.

How will we be able to tell?  The live channel 9 episode says it is the first smooth streaming episode... is that when it was broadcast live, or the streaming version?  It would be cool if there is a bitrate that comes up with the controls when smooth streaming is working...

without knowing exactly which video you referring to, it's hard to say.

we get videos that come in 2GB and get re-sized to 300MB.

This change was made to our internal encoder which encodes all of the videos you see on Channel 9.

Thus all new videos encoded from mid-day today will have right encoding profile for Zune videos.

I took a look inside one of the files (OfficeCasualJott_Zune_ch9.wmv) and it's actually not WMV-format, but MP4. And when I rename the file to OfficeCasualJott_Zune_ch9.mp4 it works.

You are right.

We switched to new Zune HD format and it was set to H264ZuneHD instead of VC1ZuneHD profile.

I made appropriate changes, and new videos should have right format from now on.
