Coffeehouse - Issues about XP SP2

Abou DM, I don't think that such minor features will push new users into LH, MS have a lot of things reserved to LH... In the past, for example... When new versions of IE were released, they become available for past versions...

Much like media player actually... But it better integrate with WinXP...
With XP2, Ms is including a bunch of features that could be hold to LH, so this minor one, Download Manager, could also be a great upgrade!

About Ms Update, my idea was something like "Unified Update"... It couldn't be in the MS Update site, but it could be a API where we developers can use as standardized way to update clients...

Coffeehouse - Issues about XP SP2

I was testing and reading about SP2, and I got a couple questions...

The first one, where is the download manager for Internet Explorer? Or does it is just for LH? I remember to saw this before (in picture, no tested yet)... Why MS don't include this in SP2?

Another one is about Microsoft Update...
I was wondering...
MS has made a central place for their product updates, such as SQL Server, Exchange, Office, etc...
Why does MS doesn't extend it's concept of updates, to third party?

Let me explain... It's something like to be possible to me, to publish updates of my own software under Microsoft Update... MS provide a mechanism to me to identify if I installed the user have my sofware installed, and then I publish from my server the updates,
that the user see and get via the Microsoft Update... But, MS Update actually could be just a "bridge" between me, the Developer, and my client using my software...

If this can't be done to Windows XP actually, it could be a good idea to Longhorn! What you think?

Thanks,

Tech Off - Configuration Files

.Net stores configuration in XML files, named with the .config extension, where in the Web case, the file is called Web.Config, and in applications case, the file is the [name of the assembly].config, so, my question is... Can I assign a configuration
file for specific Assemblies?

Assuming my project use 2 distinct Assemblies, the main one, wich is an Windows Forms Executable, and a DLL for the Bussiness Layer...

BL.dll
MyApp.exe

If I want two config files, could I use:

BL.config
MyApp.config

So, when BL.dll read something from Configuration file, it gets from it's own .config, and the same for MyApp.exe...

I don't even know if it's useful for something, but I was wondering...
Because, I was developing with unit testing, and I was searching a way to the testing assembly gets the ConnectionString from the Configuration file (it's still unsolved)... Then it comes up in my mind...

Thanks..

Coffeehouse - Java and .Net Convergence

About the the third part implementations about .Net... I knew about the Mono Project before... But the DotGNU was new to me, so I decided to know more about...

I love the initiative of these communities... Soon, we will have platform options... Our projects could be ported to Linux or MacOS without so much effort...

But what, I keep asking myself is why, why these people from Linux/Free Soft communities are so stupid? There's a section in the DotGNU site named "Don't get caught in .Net"... When I read that, I start to laugh out...

What these people think they are? It's always the same history, they talk about the MS like an evil, and they are the save, your rescue from that evil.. Come on... This is the stupid part of this Free Software community that I hate... If they're so concerned
about what they're doing, why they keep annoying around MS-stuff? Just don't use that... Even dislinking linux and free software, I don't waste my time triying to convince people that the platform I use is the Best...

Coffeehouse - How to download Visual Studio 2005 alpha

MS is doing a lot of things to being closer the developers, but still keep us from easy reaching their Betas... Is that right?

Wouldn't be interesting to have public betas? Because the initiative to be closer to the developers is public... Anyone can participate in the Blogs of the MS-devs... Anyone can come here and talk to MS-guys... And why I can't easly have the Alpha of the product
that i'm interested to update when it comes?

If you can distribute the Alpha/Beta CDs/Dvds on the events, why can't we download it from the Web? Can't you have better feedback then that?

Anyways, the betas can be unofficialy download from some sites, p2p networks, and also be bought in piracy... (I saw some selling, but I refuse to buy it, argh!)... Why not "officialize" this "open" alpha/beta?

Thanks guys...

Coffeehouse - Managed Shell Extensions

Sry the late!
I'm here...
So, I have some ideias of using Shell Extensions, but I'm not proficient C/C++ programmer, and also doesn't have much knowledge about Interoping in .Net...
I got some samples of Wrappers written in C#, but I found it hard to implement... Anyways it works..
I asked because I believe it could be a welcome api in our .Net CLR...

I read a lot about Longhorn... Interesting how you're enabling us to extend the user interface with the Tiles... So I think we'll have god support for extending user interface in LH, could it be more powerfull than shell extensions, since LH is being built
in the .Net Core... interesting..
But i'm sad to know that these easy extend features will not be available in Whidbey...

The question about performance is interesting...
Managed Code is usually slower than Native right? How this is going to be addressed in LH?
Thanks for replying...
