  • FINALLY, Engadget without Crapware :D

I've been a member of C9 for a long time, but am not active at all and only check these forums out every three or four days now.

I felt though, that I had to sign in just to post this message as I am sick to death of seeing these stupid posts by you, Dovella.

Now, I know I will most likely be berated (or worse) for the following, but I just need to get it off my chest, so here goes...

Dovella, you are a sad, sad little man.  People have different opinions about what is and isn't good, get over it.  I'm sure I read on one of your rants that you had children?  If so, that means that you at least have the maturity to bring a child into this world, please use some of that maturity when it comes to posting on this forum.  My heart sinks when I see the first page and notice 3 or four posts by you, as this severly limits my choices as to what interesting posts I can read.  Please, please, please I implore you... STOP!

Well, thanks to Brian, Bas and Tommy I think dovella will now have a heart attack at all the similarities to the MS logo colour scheme.

    Dovella, you will be missed.

    (only kidding Dov)

  • Hey ! Chrome copy Windows flag

    Oh My God!

I suppose the country of Mauritius should declare war on Microsoft then for "stealing" the colours from their flag then?

Chill dude.. MS don't own everything!

  • What was the last fun, free thing you downloaded from MS?

IE2 IIRC, might have been 3 or 4... one of the early releases anyway Smiley... only fun coz I managed to snag a "I downloaded it" T-Shirt which is lying in a drawer somewhere.

Everything else I can't really say has been fun - useful, but not "fun" Sad

There were 3 more servers which ran specific services, but these were the main 5.

  • Windows 2003 Domain Server Reccomendations

It depends on the size of your network, and how many users you have.

I happily ran a 500+ machine network with 1300+ users from 2 Win2k3 servers for 2 years with no problems.  They weren't massively powerful boxes either, Dual Core Athlon MP 2200s with 1Gb RAM and 2x72Gb SCSI HDs each.

After upgrading our servers, replacing the 2 with 5 new boxes, I didn't notice that much of a difference when monitoring the servers to be honest.

Server 2003 can handle a lot, but for a bit of reilience, obviously, more can be better, if the budget allows of course Smiley

  • Sicko

I have to agree about the NHS.  Yes, they get slagged off by the press and public, but when you need them, they are there.

I recently had a heart attack (minor), and went to my local hospital A&E thinking it was indegestion.
I was rushed straight in for a barrage of tests, then admitted to the Coronary Care Unit.  4 Days later (I was admitted on the weekend, no consultants), I was transferred to another hospital where I had an Angiogram and had 2 stents fitted.  I was out on  the Thursday.

Throughout my stay, I was impressed with the professionalism and the humour of the nursing staff.

What did this stay and operation cost me personally?... £2.90 for the patientline crap at the bedside so I could watch TV whilst lying still for 5 hours!

(For those of you unfamiliar with the concept, Patientline is a system that provides TV, Telephone and Internet services at the bedside in hospitals - the internet service is rubbish, based on Windows CE from what I could see when I crashed the system Smiley, and the service is generally a rip off).

I really does sadden me that the nurses get such pathetic pay for the job they do.

But it's still wrong. Understand, I'm not a prude that you have in mind. People should not mix religion, politics or other disturbing elements in a piece of technology no matter how funny they think it is. Devil in logo - that's not good.

I wasn't trying to imply you were a prude.  If that was the impression you got, I apologise.

The logo used by the FreeBSD team is not a devil though, it is a demon... a play on the word Daemon as in a background process on UNIX / Linux systems.

A quote from the Unix System Administrators Handbook reads as follows:

"Many people equate the word ``daemon'' with the word ``demon,'' implying some kind of Satanic connection between UNIX and the underworld. This is an egregious misunderstanding. ``Daemon'' is actually a much older form of ``demon''; daemons have no particular bias towards good or evil, but rather serve to help define a person's character or personality. The ancient Greeks' concept of a ``personal daemon'' was similar to the modern concept of a ``guardian angel'' --- ``eudaemonia'' is the state of being helped or protected by a kindly spirit. As a rule, UNIX systems seem to be infested with both daemons and demons." (p403)

Please say that was written with your tongue firmly planted in your cheek? Big Smile

Whilst I can't say I love it, my preferred OS of choice at the moment is XP.

I have Vista installed on another machine purely for the media centre side of things, and XP on my other machines.

In the past I have preferred DOS over Win3x, OS/2 over Win95, Linux over Windows xx, Netware over NT... it all depends what I am doing at  the time with the particular machine.

Why tie yourself to one OS as the be all and end all?
