However, there is one sticky point. I want to be able to remote desktop connect from my work PC to one of the servers on our network. I have tried, repeatedly, to RDC into various servers, but have failed each time. I'm always getting the error message:

The system could not log you in. Maka sure the username and password are correct and try again.

I have made sure that the usernname and password are correct. I have tried multiple accounts on 4 different servers, and I'm getting the same error messages for all attempts. What could be causing this problem?

[Which attributes in the App.Config file do I specify in order to increase the size of the message being sent back to my WCF service?]

I’ve written a WCF service that uses TCP as the transport protocol. I’ve got it hosted in a Windows service which I’ve written. And now I’ve written a simple app, as a client, to test getting and sending the data.

Fetching data using my new WCF service works fine. (YEAH!) However, sending the data back to the service doesn’t work. I get an error message that says, “The maximum message size quota for incoming messages has been exceeded for the remote channel.” This doesn’t surprise me in the least, as I am sending back a boat load of data (one of the primary reasons why I choose TCP over HTTP was because of the data I would be sending and receiving).

I’ve been asking around to try and get help on how to increase the size of whatever buffers I need to, in order to make this work. I was advised to increase the sizes of:

maxBufferPoolSize

maxBufferSize

maxReceivedMessageSize

and for the <readQuotas> element I was advised to increase the sizes to:

maxStringContentLength

maxByteArrayContentLength

maxDepth

maxBytesPerRead

maxNameTableCharCount

I’ve made the changes to the app.config file of the client application, but that didn’t help. I’m not surprised by this, because I’ve received the data fine at the client. It is the service side that needs the changes. However, I don’t know where to put these changes into the app.config file. Which element or section do I put them into? And do I put them into only the WCF service’s app.config file, or do I put them into the Windows service’s app.config file, or both?

[Can TableAdapters save to multiple databases?]

I've been using ADO.NET's data adapters for years, but now want to use a table adapter in my WCF Service, which I am writing in VS 2008 using the .NET Framework 3.5. I've got 30 tables, in 2 different databases, which I want to save data to. I have been nieve enough to think that I could fetch and save the data to both databases. Now that I'm actually at the point of implementing the save function using the table adapter's UpdateAll() method, it looks like I was so wrong about this.

So, I want to know, can one table adapter be used to save data using a strongly typed dataset which has tables drawn from more than 1 database? And if it can, how is that done?
in reply to Can TableAdapters save to multiple databases?

<evnet:views>1274</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/442227/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>I've been using ADO.NET's data adapters for years, but now want to use a table adapter in my WCF Service, which I am writing in VS 2008 using the .NET Framework 3.5. I've got 30 tables, in 2 different databases, which I want to save data to. I have been nieve enough to think that I could…</evnet:previewtext>

<trackback:ping>http://channel9.msdn.com/442227/Trackback.aspx</trackback:ping>

How do I get the data from several tables into a strongly-typed dataset using a table adapter [How do I get the data from several tables into a strongly-typed dataset using a table adapter]

I am using the method that Ira Lukhezo described in a blog post of his on WCF for VS 2008. (Its an excellent post, I've found.) The thing that I'm having trouble with is getting data from several tables. I've followed his suggestions and made a strongly typed dataset of 30 tables, which are split between 2 different databases. In Ira's example he used one of the data adapters to return just one data table. I want to return data from all 30 tables in the two different databases. What I thought I could do was define my own GetData() method which would return an instance of my strongly typed dataset. What I'm having difficulty with is retrieving the data for each table and assigning it to the data tables in the dataset. I have, for example, something like this:

ASIDataset dsReturn = new ASIDataset();
ASIIncomeLast30TableAdapter last30Adapter = new ASIIncomeLast30TableAdapter();

and then this:

ASIDataset.ASIIncomeLast30DataTable last30Table = new ASIDataset.ASIIncomeLast30DataTable();
last30Adapter.Fill(last30Table, ClientNumber, CaseNumber);

But if I try to do either of the following two lines, I get an error saying that the ASIIncomeLast30 is a read-only data table:

dsReturn.Tables["ASIIncomeLast30"] = last30Table; //causes error
dsReturn.ASIIncomeLast30 = last30Table;  //also causes error

So, I am not sure how I can get the data for all 30 tables from the 2 different databases.

in reply to How do I get the data from several tables into a strongly-typed dataset using a table adapter

<evnet:views>1325</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/441589/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>I am using the method that Ira Lukhezo described in a blog post of his on WCF for VS 2008. (Its an excellent post, I've found.) The thing that I'm having trouble with is getting data from several tables. I've followed his suggestions and made a strongly typed dataset of 30…</evnet:previewtext>

<trackback:ping>http://channel9.msdn.com/441589/Trackback.aspx</trackback:ping>

Working with Dataset Designer with a table adapter, part 2 [Working with Dataset Designer with a table adapter, part 2]

This question is more difficult. I'm trying to retrieve data from 2 databases. I'm trying to retrieve data from several tables in a database. All of the tables that I'm retrieving have at least the same three columns in their primary key (thus they are in a one-to-one relationship with the primary table), and others are additional columns in their primary key in order to have a one-to-many relationship with their parent table. Basically, the table definitions are as follows:

CREATE TABLE [dbo].[MyTable1](
[ClientNumber] [int] NOT NULL,
[CaseNumber] [tinyint] NOT NULL,
[Followup] [tinyint] NOT NULL CONSTRAINT [MyTable1_Default] DEFAULT ((0)),
--Several other columns are defined here for each table.
CONSTRAINT [PK_MyTable1] PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED
(
[ClientNumber] ASC,
[CaseNumber] ASC,
[Followup] ASC
)WITH  ON [PRIMARY]
) ON [PRIMARY]

Because these tables (almost 30 of them) have the same 3 columns I wrote a generic stored procedure which I use to retrieve the data for any given ClientNumber, CaseNumber and Followup. I pass in the name of each table and the ClientNumber, CaseNumber and Followup parameters. Here is the source for that stored procedure:

CREATE PROCEDURE [dbo].[spTableData]
@TableName varchar(50),
@ClientNumber int,
@CaseNumber tinyint = NULL
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE
  @executionString nvarchar(500);

SET NOCOUNT ON;

    -- Build SELECT command
SET @executionString = N'SELECT * FROM ';
SET @executionString = @executionString + @TableName;
SET @executionString = @executionString + N' WHERE ClientNumber = ';
SET @executionString = @executionString + CAST(@ClientNumber as nvarchar);
IF @CaseNumber Is Not NULL
BEGIN
  SET @executionString = @executionString + N' AND CaseNumber = ' + CAST(@CaseNumber as nvarchar);
END
SET @executionString = @executionString + ' ORDER BY CaseNumber DESC';

--now get the data
exec sp_executesql @executionString;
END

I am having problems with the dataset designer. I'm trying to find a way of specifying each table's name, and maybe some default parameters for the ClientNumber, CaseNumber and Followup, so that I can get each of the almost 30 tables into the dataset, but the dataset designer is fighting me on this. [How many use the smart client software factory?]

Some years ago we started developing our first ASP.NET application. We started with beta 2 of the .NET framework, and have worked with it ever since. Then about 5 years ago we converted one of our Windows applications into ASP.NET and at that point we were doing more Web development than Windows development. However, we’ve got 2 major Windows applications left, both written in VB6. One doesn’t take much maintenance, and I think we’ll all comfortable in leaving it as a VB6 app. However the other one is a big app, that is causing us problems. Both in the way it was designed and because of some third party controls by companies that either are no longer around or no longer support those old ActiveX controls. Because of the way in which this Windows app is used, it must remain a Windows app; mainly due to the fact that it must run in a disconnected fashion on users’ laptops. So some time ago I started investigating ways of updating this application’s structure and I came across the Smart Client Software Factory (SCSF). I’ve been spending the better part of the last month or so trying to learn it.

The SCSF is good, but it is quite complex. I’m working my way through the hands-on labs, and really starting to understand it much better. But I’m stepping back a bit and beginning to wonder about the bigger picture, for my situation at least. I’m wondering about maintaining this re-written application, by other developers than myself. It is taking me a while to learn the SCSF, and I am pretty sure that some of my co-workers will not be able to get their minds around it. On that basis alone, I am considering using a simpler, although less best practices, approach. After all, if my co-workers cannot use the SCSF, then I think my re-writing this application won’t be too useful. So, the only thing that would convince me to continue with the SCSF is if I were to find out many people in the .NET work force use SCSF when doing Windows development. At least some of my co-workers won’t be able to wrap their minds around SCSF, and I think that some will have a very difficult time with it, but if the methodology of SCSF is prevalent among Windows developers, then I might continue with this approach.

So, I am asking, if you do Windows development, do you use a SCSF approach or not?

in reply to How many use the smart client software factory?

<evnet:views>993</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/425340/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>Some years ago we started developing our first ASP.NET application. We started with beta 2 of the .NET framework, and have worked with it ever since. Then about 5 years ago we converted one of our Windows applications into ASP.NET and at that point we were doing more Web development than…</evnet:previewtext>

<trackback:ping>http://channel9.msdn.com/425340/Trackback.aspx</trackback:ping>

My Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse [My Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse]

This morning when I got up I fired up my PC. The mouse didn’t work and the keyboard didn’t work. I’ve got a Microsoft Wireless Comfort keyboard and mouse 4000. I thought that perhaps the batteries needed to be replaced, so I replaced the batteries for both the mouse and the keyboard, but it didn’t help. No response at all with either the mouse or keyboard. So now I’ve got Windows Vista waiting there and I’ve got no way (that I know of) to do a Control-Alt-Delete and shut it down. The only way I know of shutting it down is to power off the machine. (Side question: is there any way of doing a Control-Alt-Delete in Windows Vista, when that machine is not a part of an Active Directory domain? I don't have AD at home, but I'm wondering nevertheless.) This mouse and keyboard are fairly new; I have never changed the batteries in them until this morning. After I changed the batteries I pressed the button on both the mouse, keyboard and the wireless broadcasting unit so that they would “find” one another; but that didn’t work. Can this mean that the mouse and keyboard have gone bad that quickly? They only last as long as one set of batteries life time? I should hope not, as that would be a very expensive disposable keyboard and mouse.

I’m wondering if I’ve missed something. Since I only had about 10 minutes to work with the mouse and keyboard before I had to leave work, I had to leave it sitting there. I just talked with my wife and she said that after I left she powered it down and back up again. It came up, and naturally went into the “Windows shutdown abruptly” mode. She was able to respond to it at that point using the mouse to bring it up normally, but after that it stopped responding to the mouse and keyboard.

in reply to My Microsoft wireless keyboard and mouse

<evnet:views>807</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/422694/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>This morning when I got up I fired up my PC. The mouse didn’t work and the keyboard didn’t work. I’ve got a Microsoft Wireless Comfort keyboard and mouse 4000. I thought that perhaps the batteries needed to be replaced, so I replaced the batteries for both the mouse and the…</evnet:previewtext>

<trackback:ping>http://channel9.msdn.com/422694/Trackback.aspx</trackback:ping>

Got a strange beeping sound after changing memory [Got a strange beeping sound after changing memory]

I just finished changing memory on a friend's PC. She's got a 3 or 4 year old Compaq PC Presario. It only had 256 MB of memory and was getting pretty slow. I've changed it to 1 GB of memory.
