  • "metro" modern ui thoughts / questions

    I'm going to start ranting!

Skeuomorphism is a good thing! It actually promotes easy and good understanding as learning by association is a very powerful way to learn something new.

However UI's are at the whim of designers who typically like to follow trends, whether good or not so, whether the rest of us like it or not, we don't get much of a say! Design is not democratic.

However, the 'success' of Windows 8, Surface, Phone how much of this can be put down to the Interface? I would argue a great deal. UI's after all *MUST* be attractive to look at, as well as work well. I feel a re-read of 'About Face' is in order ...

  • "metro" modern ui thoughts / questions

I'm not a lover of Metro-style ... why because it's hard on the eyesight, big blocks of plain colour are very hard to look at when they are bright colours and dull colours make a dull viewing experiencing.

The default colour scheme for Office 2013 is a perfect example, it's all white and difficult to use for long periods, the theme's just serve to take the edge off but new Office 2013 isn't nice to look at.

The added complication is the icon design, the similarities between 'Reply' and 'Reply to All' being point and case of bad design as they are too close and confusion is easily caused.

As for Surface, well it's only people that I know that work for Microsoft and Ian Smith (Irascian) that I know that have one so I'm not going to plan for Metro apps anytime soon.

  • Hi All ... it's been awhile!

Gosh, I love developer politics, amazing so much going on in the world, death, war and famine ... and developers get upset and emotional about stuff no-one else sees. It's actually very endearing that these things can produce so much passion.

However, perspective is always required and maybe this is can be my gift to the Coffeehouse again!

    Film

Celebrities aren't my favourite creature, I feel Science and Scientists positively contribute more to our society. However entertainment is a necessary evil to keep the body and mind refreshed.

I love film because it is the art form that shows exactly how powerful the human imagination can be. I'm always astonished by what people dream up next, there really is no limit now. Even the laws of physics are regularly broken in Films.

I'm actually working in Cinema! Not serving pop-corn but helping a chain in the UK making the experience much nicer, easier and more enjoyable.

People still Love Films and with the introduction of Netflix and LoveFilm, people have fallen in love with Films again and have actually helped increase attendances, it is a night out, or something easy to do with the kids.

My role is far less about solving the worlds energy problems which my old role was about and more about enjoying myself again after what has been a tough few years.

  • Hi All ... it's been awhile!

... so I thought I would pop-up and have a look-see at what you've all done to the place, since I was last here in '10! Wow, that's a long time!

Anyway, now I'm not travelling around the world building PowerStations (which was fun but knackering!) I've got a new role back in the UK in a new industry, as I fancied a complete change and my old company wasn't doing so well.

As some of you may remember I was a bit of film-buff, now I'm lucky enough to have a great role in the Film industry.

One of my roles is looking after a team of Developers and it's not been goodness for these guys, there is plenty in old VB circa 1997 so it's time for them to get right uptospeed. So, I thought I needed to get uptospeed myself with what Good looks like today ... and where better than hanging around here to do that!

So howdy everyone! Been a while ... Big Smile

  • Windows Mobile 7 Launch - October 11th NYC

    Now there's a thought!

However, it's far beyond the capabilies of Microsoft alone to make that happen as you would be asking phone manufacturers to give away commercial advantages ... and this is before they can even trust each other. With the number of lawsuits between them at the moment, this is unlikely to happen anytime soon.

But make a witty YouTube Video about it, get 5 million hits like lost luggage and you can apparent get large companies to do anything!

  • Video Request: Mark Souza & SQLCAT

I met Mark Souza today here at TVP, UK. He has a story to tell about how SQL Server grew up and all the new and exciting stuff that is coming in SQL 10 so it would be really cool to have afew vid's on this.

To say I'm stoked-up about SQL10 is an understatement! Bring it on!!!

  • Could it be possible? Facebook is down!

I'm amazed! I'm also amazed that the major news networks in the UK haven't picked up on this yet, but Twitter is going nutts so I'm wondering if that's bring Twitter down in turn!!! Smiley

Anyway, I'll just have to email my friends instead .... or phone them .... so old tech!

Actually, I hate facebook really, it feels like a backward step to me, does anyone else feel the same?

    It's good to be back!

  • Lost Niners

Hey guys I'm still around just not as often as I would like!

I've gone through some big changes in my personal life and the projects I've been working on have been business related. All this has swung me away from tech ... now I'm swinging back as I love technology and Microsoft is cutting edge as always!

So what have a found out in the last 18 months?

Well Apple and Twitter aren't doing technology any real good. It's all abit too dumbed down. Too much control is given away, we are mainlining unfiltered celeb driven media and lock-in reigns. I really don't like it! These trends have gone too far. It's high time to redress the balance.

Now I don't give a monkeys about phones! ... or web GUI technologies. For me, it's all about Data. Whether in a database, in the Cloud, ETL'ed, WS-I'ed, RESTed or ESB'ed .... it's all about the data baby and always will be! Now I'm working a project that will give my company it's first SQL Server FastTrack system! Stuff the iPhone, this is great tech!!!! It's my thing and I love it! Love it ! Love it!

So cheer up people, the tech recovery starts here!

As for my friends in Microsoft. Windows and Office cash-cows are over. Lack of confidence and too much control will cripple Microsoft. It's not about the man in the street, they are too fickle to bet on, go after business their needs are more predictable and once again create an environment where innovaton rules supreme, 'so much more still to invent' such be the mantra.

As for Open Source, well may as well fully embrace it. It's a battle of hearts and minds out there and it will make it easy to like Microsoft once again which is just half the battle. May as well give it away and charge for support than make no sales at all. But trust me, only a handful will look at the code, people will still buy the shinny box ... they can't help it, most people just aren't techies, this is what Linux didn't counter and why it never took off.

I only do FB, because my friends are on there but it sucks bad. I wish I could say so much more on it but I know if I do someone will read it and parcel it up with a pretty bow and sell it. I did an experiment on FB, I bought a pay as you go phone and published the number in a status update ... it was 4 hours before I got a cold call on that new number! So say nothing on FB just say Hi and what pub to meet them at. There is no trusting FB.

Anyway nice to be back .... lets crack on !!!!!!! .... we have some stunning tech to think of .....
