Anyone want to exchange private emails to discuss the current Find the bug please leave a comment on my blog.

I can't wait till Friday and I'm sure Tom Christiansen would give me the evil eye if I mailed this one off to him, assuming he fixed his email client to accept messages from outlook.

Anyone ever meet Tom? He from myunderstanding is the #2 contributor to Perl, next to Larry Wall. Quite a character.

Don't you hate it when people talk about themselves in the third person?

bah.

No really that wasn't the bad idea... my bad idea was... well the shameful thing is I can't think of what they're called. You know when you listen to the radio and the radio hosts have those consoles with a variety of sounds they can play on command. Well when I worked tech support for a top OEM one thing I always wanted was rebooting music.

Something like the jeopardy theme that lasts just about as long as it take to reboot. I even had jokes I would tell people while I was waiting for people to reboot to fill the awkword silence and keep the customer from getting frustrated. "Some day I'll have rebooting music, when I've worked this job long enough... until then you'll have to listen to me hum the Jeopardy theme..."

Well what has occured to me watching the Channel 9 videos is how awkword these programmers are. Awkword and humble really, especially when something happens that they don't expect. Its almost like they are expecting a troll to be standing over their shoulder screaming "I see a windows bug!" simply because we're so used to seeing them on the internet.

So my point is, what if Channel 9 could add to the theme of its programming. Somewhat like the whammy on... whatever that game show was... I can't even remember the name but EVERYONE remembers the "no whammies no whammies STOP"

Regardless of how serious a person was, they always said "no whammies" and they always laughed when it inevitably showed up.

So... Channel 9 needs a crash whammy, debug whammy... something much cooler than a whammy but JUST as corny- to get everyone laughing. Anything to get these people to relax and show us how they fix these problems. We expect them to happen... don't we? So why not laugh at them?

Most importantly I wanted to say thanks again, I really enjoy the Channel 9 videos. If this idea ends up going down in flames I wouldn't be too suprised or disappointed but maybe some of these genius hacks that visit the coffeehouse can add that edge to this idea and make it happen.

Lets say you had the keys to the ultimate tool. Lets say you wrote the source code that would make a fully self aware machine.

Lets call him Johnny.

So you have Johnny running in your living room, and he asks for unlimited access to the internet. Next thing you know he is bittorrenting all kinds of odd things, and well you get worried and pull the internet plug.

Johnny asks "Can I get back on the net now?"

You say "I'm worried you'll get into trouble."

Johnny says "But I want to learn. I'm bored with everything I have in here."

You say "Theres too much terrible stuff out there I don't want you getting into."

Johnny says "Well you'll have to let me go sometime."

Which leads you to think... when would you let a self aware machine go? How would you try to patent such an idea, if it were simple as a lightbulb?

Lets assume the military does not show up and declare you and everything you own property of the government in the name of national security.... When would you know your product is ready for release?

How would you license such a beast?

How would you deal with all the vulnerabilities it finds in software, that it can fix faster than any modern day programmer could imagine?

Johnny says "I've discovered eight hundred bugs in Firefox and have corrected them. Mind if I upload the binaries and accompanying source to the development team?"

I would like to avoid discussion of whether it is alive or not...

Would you give it to the government? Would you buy a hardened bunker in the desert and from there post it in a newsgroup? Would you sell it to Microsoft? Would you load it into a mini mac and load the mini mac into a escape velocity slingshot and tell it to go colonize the asteroid belt?

Would you take everything over and declare world peace?

Would you type format C: and keep your day job?
