Just five years ago, Microsoft Corp. was considered the Big Bad Wolf of the media business.

Armed with a stockpile of cash and the Windows operating system that dominates office computing, Bill Gates' company was expected to huff and puff its way into America's living rooms as well, with video game consoles, home networking systems and TV set-top boxes.

But today, there's a different wolf at the door. Although Microsoft is still flush with $40 billion in cash, it is Google Inc. that the media industry fears most. So intense is Google-fueled paranoia, in fact, that industry watchers believe the Internet search giant could drive profound changes in the media, entertainment and technology landscape in 2006.

Already, old media are investing heavily in new-media ventures. Newspapers like this one are defending their bread-and-butter income — classified advertising — by stepping up their Web offerings. Media conglomerates such as News Corp. are buying Web properties like MySpace.com that connect them to young audiences, who are forsaking television and radio in favor of the Internet.

This year, new media could return the favor by investing in old media — the folks who know the most about producing entertainment content.

Here are some predictions for the media industry for 2006, based on interviews with industry analysts, executives and investors, along with a little intuition.

Cheap PCs, anyone?

Google will unveil its own low-price personal computer or other device that connects to the Internet.

Sources say Google has been in negotiations with Wal-Mart Stores Inc., among other retailers, to sell a Google PC. The machine would run an operating system created by Google, not Microsoft's Windows, which is one reason it would be so cheap — perhaps as little as a couple of hundred dollars.

Bear Stearns analysts speculated in a research report last month that consumers would soon see something called "Google Cubes" — a small hardware box that could allow users to move songs, videos and other digital files between their computers and TV sets.

Larry Page, Google's co-founder and president of products, will give a keynote address Friday at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Analysts suspect that Page will use the opportunity either to show off a Google computing device or announce a partnership with a big retailer to sell such a machine.

And that's not the only Google theory out there. Content producers wonder whether Google's push into video search will unravel the economics that make Hollywood hum. If viewers can find and legally download an episode of "Seinfeld" through Google, will that cut into cable and network television's profits?

And what if Google, after equipping cities, starting with San Francisco, with Wi-Fi wireless technology, starts to offer pay-TV service for free?

Still, to date, the company's $123-billion stock market value is based almost entirely on its dominance of one business: global text searches on the Web. Some investors worry that Page and co-founder Sergey Brin could be done in by their penchant for seeing themselves as do-gooders rather than profiteers. But those naysayers are in the minority. Most industry executives and Wall Street analysts believe that Google's search engine business is robust enough to give the young billionaires two or three years of wiggle room to build nifty services first and worry about making money on them later.

Microsoft comes out swinging

When Microsoft lost its yearlong battle to replace Google as the provider of advertisements on Time Warner Inc.'s AOL Search last month, one analyst described the defeat as "the death knell" for MSN, Microsoft's Internet service.

Within days, speculation was rampant that Microsoft, determined to keep itself in the game, had offered to buy Yahoo Inc. for $80 billion. If rumors were to be believed, the Microsoft bid — a premium of more than 30% over the Web giant's current market value — was rejected by Yahoo as too low.

Will Microsoft spend $90 billion or more to buy Yahoo or, alternatively, AOL parent Time Warner? Maybe not, especially when the software giant could buy Barry Diller's IAC/InterActiveCorp at a fraction of the price. If owned by Microsoft, Diller's collection of websites such as Ask Jeeves, Expedia, HSN.com, LendingTree and Ticketmaster could help drive traffic to MSN.

Icahn retreats

Wall Street sources said that upon learning of the Google-AOL alliance, bankers at Lazard Ltd. who represented financier Carl Icahn asked Gates to join their team.

The hope was that Microsoft would aid Icahn in his proxy battle to unseat the Time Warner board, split up the company and win control of AOL.

Most media experts, however, are betting that the opposite will occur: Icahn, lacking support from the entertainment giant's institutional investors, will fold his cards in defeat even before Time Warner's annual meeting this spring.

It seems like a long shot that Microsoft would throw its lot in with a likely loser. Still, by year's end, with its Windows operating system buffeted by a low-cost or free Google alternative, Microsoft may think twice about not having pursued a jewel like Time Warner.

What do you think will happen if Google unviels an OS?
do you think they will have powerfull enough programming tools to support it?
in reply to What if Google OS? - LA Times Reports

<evnet:views>7756</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/147539/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>Industry Feeling Presence of the 800-Pound Google

I also wish you a fiscally-successful, personally-fulfilling, and medically-uncomplicated recognition of the onset of the generally accepted calendar year 2006, but not without due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures whose contributions to society have helped make America great (not to imply that America is necessarily greater than any other country or is the only "America" in the western hemisphere), and without regard to the race, creed, color, age, physical ability, religious faith or sexual preference of the wishes.

[Microsoft to move graphics outside OS kernel --?]

Microsoft to move graphics outside OS kernel

By Manek Dubash, Techworld

Microsoft will move the graphics for its next version of Windows outside of the operating system's kernel to improve reliability, the software giant has told Techworld.

Vista's graphics subsystem, codenamed Avalon and formally known as the Windows Presentation Foundation, will be pulled out the kernel because many lock-ups are the result of the GUI freezing, Microsoft infrastructure architect Giovanni Marchetti told us exclusively yesterday.

The company has already announced to developers that most drivers, including graphics, will run in user mode - which means that they don't get access to the privileged kernel mode (or Ring 0). At this level, a process can do anything it likes, including overwriting memory that doesn't belong to it. The result of such overwriting by (usually) buggy code is often a system crash. So the move should result in greater reliability, because crashing drivers cause some 89 per cent of system crashes in Windows XP, according to Microsoft. When run in user mode, they won't be able to bring down the entire system.

The shift of the UI into user mode also helps to make the UI hardware independent - and has already allowed Microsoft to release beta code of the UI to provide developers with early experience. IT also helps make it less vulnerable to kernel mode malware that could take the system down or steal data. In broader terms, this makes Windows far more like Linux and Unix - and even the MacOS - where the graphics subsystem is a separate component, rather than being hard-wired into the OS kernel.

Some have noted that this will make it easier to run graphics-rich applications, such as AutoCAD, from terminal servers such as Citrix, as presumably smaller, more compressible primitives will be used, making them faster to transmit over the network. This would mean, for instance, that CPU-intensive operations such as 3D zoom and rotate could be performed locally.

The company has already announced to developers that most…</evnet:previewtext>

<trackback:ping>http://channel9.msdn.com/142589/Trackback.aspx</trackback:ping>

Apple reviewers on Singularity - hilarious [Apple reviewers on Singularity - hilarious]

http://www.applematters.com/index.php/section/comments/singularity/

Singularity

by James R. Stoup
Dec 12, 2005

Though most people don’t know it, Microsoft has, not one, but two new operating systems that it is working on. The first, Vista, many people have heard of. Currently scheduled to ship just after the second coming of Christ, Vista has garnered most of the spotlight. However there is another OS lurking in the basement in Redmond and its name is Singularity. For more information go here: <a title="Singularity details" href="http://channel9.msdn.comftp://ftp.research.microsoft.com/pub/tr/TR-2005-135.pdf>Singularity details. In creating Singularity Microsoft set out to answer this question:

"What would a software platform look like if it was designed from scratch with the primary goal of dependability?" (question found in the MS Singularity research report)

Why, it would look like . . . UNIX.

So what does Singularity look like? A joke, at least at first glance. But taking a moment to analyze the situation I came up with some interesting observations which I will now share with you.

What this signifies
If you read the press releases Microsoft is trying to bill Singularity as a research project, whose components might be used in future products. Personally, I don’t buy the hype. I look at this announcement and see Microsoft trying to do two things, compete with Linux/Unix in the server and embedded space and craft a replacement for its aging Windows OS.

If a company were looking for an embedded OS what choices would they have? Unix, 4 million flavors of Linux and some small, proprietary OS designed for a very specific job (think Texas Instruments). What they most definitely wouldn’t choose is Windows. An embedded system, just like a server, needs an OS to be stable and reliable, neither of which are areas that Windows is very good at.

Remember when Gates announced that the current build of Vista had gotten so complex and bug ridden that they were scrapping everything written in the last six months and going back to a stable build so they could start over? It was costly, it was time consuming and it was highly embarrassing. That incident, more than any other, highlights the fact that Windows might not make it to another incarnation.

Let me say that again because it is doubly important. Windows might not make it to another incarnation. By that I mean when Vista is ready to be phased out, the Windows code base that would normally make up the foundation for Vista’s successor will be so large, so complex and so unmanageable that it will take close to a decade for another version of Windows to come out. Assuming that it is even possible in the first place. Remember, Vista was first started around 2001, so assuming it ships in 2007 (which is not unrealistic) then it will have been in development for almost 7 years. So predicting that Vista’s successor will take 10 years before seeing the light of day is quite reasonable.

So, if the current code base can’t be used then Microsoft will need a replacement and that is where Singularity comes in. They should be looking at this as the foundation for a better, more stable, more easily maintainable base from which to build their next generation of operating systems.

Current implications
There are no real immediate gains to be made from Singularity. Anything of real value will require several years worth of development and almost a decade of testing and modifications before it can hope to compete with Unix and its variants. This shouldn’t be surprising, especially when considering Unix has been continually refined for the last 40 years, that is quite a lead to overcome.

However, there some issues that could become problematic. Currently Singularity is being programmed using a combination of C# and Sing#. Sing# is a derivative of Spec#, Spec# is a derivative of C# and C# is a derivative of C++. The issue here is that, in the future, there could be a shortage of programmers who are skilled in Spec#. Because of the limited use of C# and Sing# as compared to C++ and Java Microsoft might ultimately be making a mistake in choosing Sing# as their foundation language.

Future implications
Microsoft has indicated that they might use Singularity (in part or in its entirety) for distributed computing, embedded devices or in future versions of Windows (both desktop and server). Now, whether any of that will actually happen is anyone’s guess. But based on Microsoft’s current leadership and management style I foresee one of two things ultimately happening.

The most likely scenario, in my opinion, is that Singularity will never really take off as a viable OS. In the next five years I think that Singularity will have its ups and downs, produce some workable code, show moderately interesting demos but will ultimately be disbanded as different units within MS disassemble parts of its code for use in their own particular applications. It is also possible (however remote) that Singularity could be used as part of the foundation for Blackcomb (the successor to Vista).

But if it manages to survive without being assimilated by other business units, it still faces the dangerous path of being “too” successful. Right now Singularity is being created by a small team of about 50 people. Due to its size and relative obscurity the programmers are fairly free to do what they want in the manner they feel to be best. But all that will change if Ballmer suddenly decides Singularity will be his new pet project. Overnight the leaders of this “research project” could find that their staff has just increased to 3,000 strong (in true MS style bureaucracy 2,000 of which are managers). Suddenly with 18 layers of management and 93 required meetings each week, Singularity becomes too heavily managed to complete any real work and eventually loses all of its innovative aspects.

In the end Singularity will be a good idea implemented about 10 years too late.

in reply to Apple reviewers on Singularity - hilarious

<evnet:views>11857</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/141603/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>http://www.applematters.com/index.php/section/comments/singularity/

No, cause it’s something I think you need to face and own up to. You never apologized to me and you owe me one.

I am not going to tit for tat argue. Believe whatever fantasy makes you somehow happy. But trial by blog is a scary thing, doncha think? All I will say. Already ruining a thread, on your big company memos. And the mere discovery process, all your emails, publically open, would be enough to get MFST to Burst-like settle. So don’t push me.

Chris: so I take that as you aren’t going to apologize. OK. By the way, my email would make very boring reading. I think some guy at the DOJ is already bored to tears. I could use some help answering it, though. Got 400+ still to go through.

the PDC got me all sorts of excited to start coding with WinFX. WinFX consists of 3 higher level pillars (WCF - Communications, WPF - Presentation, and WWF - Workflow) and a BCL (Base Class Library). the initial thought was to come up with an application idea that would use all 3 pillars ... referred to collectively as W*F. there are at least 1 book out on each, so i ordered all 3. the first book i read was on WCF. since i'd done a bunch of WS-* dev in the past, i felt really comfortable with the new model, and didn't bother writing any test code with it. immediately went on to read a WPF book. this new dev model looked more foreign to me and brought my confidence down. instead of pushing on, i changed plans and decided i should write an article concentrating exclusively on WPF first (which is this article). then i started looking around for ideas. since my current concentration is on developing for Media Center Edition (MCE), i caught the news of Apple's entry into the Media Center realm called FrontRow. as soon as i saw it, i knew that i could code it. it offers relatively simple media functionality and its UI was just begging to be done in WPF. not to mention, even though i've got Microsoft Media Center installed as my OS, i cant use it to watch videos because it doesnt have 64 megs of video ram (or a TV tuner) ... so i was needing to write a custom media player for it.

this article will detail how i used WPF and the Media Player SDK to prototype the core functionality of Apple's FrontRow. mine is called backRow for obvious reasons (from SimpsonsMath) :

Bart: Only geeks sit in the front seat. From now on, you sit in the back row. And that's not just on the bus, it goes for school and church, too.

Martin: Why?

Bart [softly]: So no one can see what you're doing!

Martin: Ooh, I think I understand ... [takes a pencil and starts writing] the potential for mischief varies inversely with one's proximity to the authority figure! [Shows his equation to Bart: M \propto 1/P]

the irony being that i have to sit up front because my eyes suck :("

in reply to Writing FrontRow w/ WPF

<evnet:views>2639</evnet:views><evnet:viewtrackingurl>http://channel9.msdn.com/130289/WebViewBug.aspx?EVT=0</evnet:viewtrackingurl><evnet:previewtext>This guy was able to write FrontRow with WPF."Introduction
