  • ActiveSync Replacement ?

    DaveJLowe said:

    This is old old, but was there any resolution?

    Finally have gotten a chance to port my applications from WinCE 3.0 to Windows Mobile 5.0, and have discovered that File Sync no longer works (at least the HH manufacturer, TDS, is recommending to all of its customers that they MANUALLY move files instead of relying on File Sync).

    The situation is really quite bad at the moment, and I, too, am looking for an ActiveSync replacement.

    Very late reply...  ended up writing my own ActiveSync replacement that was heavily biased toward the specific problem that I was trying to solve, and invoking that from my custom Windows Mobile application. Blogged about it after I did it.

  • Installing XP from Vista on Gateway MT6821

    I believe that you need SP2 in order to make SATA disks operational under XP...

    If the XP install disk that you're using doesn't have SP2 pre-installed, you might have to slipstream SP2 into the setup and make a new setup CD:

    I had to do this to get my new Quad Core box to install XP onto its 320G SATA drive...

    Hmmm - perhaps something like Partition Manager ?

    Microsoft really never has had a backup strategy or software, just re-install the OS, all of your apps and data on your new HD...

  • Stuttering audio playback in Vista

    It's probably the Vista ME DRM system attempting to verify that you do own the media every 5 seconds...

  • Dell to Preinstall Linux on all of its systems and Microsoft on notice

    As long as you don't use an ATI video card for which Ubuntu Linux support is seriously broken...

  • Considering a new PDA

    I wouldn't bother with any Windows Mobile device if you have a requirement to synchronize with a PC. Since WM5, synchronization has been broken at the request of the cellphone companies using WM5 in their phones to allow creation of a billable event.

  • http://support.microsoft.com appears to be down...

    Turns out that this was a problem with a bad cookie. Deleted all cookies for microsoft.com, www.microsoft.com, support.microsoft.com, and the problem went away.

    Must be Genuine Disadvantage at work !

  • support.microsoft.com not working?

    I had this same problem, and traced it to a bad cookie. Deleted all cookies referencing microsoft.com, www.microsoft.com, support.microsoft.com and the problem went away.

    Navigating to the site or any Knowledge Base article produces:

    Server Error in '/' Application.

    Runtime Error

    Description: An application error occurred on the server. The current custom error settings for this application prevent the details of the application error from being viewed remotely (for security reasons). It could, however, be viewed by browsers running on the local server machine.

    Details: To enable the details of this specific error message to be viewable on remote machines, please create a <customErrors> tag within a "web.config" configuration file located in the root directory of the current web application. This <customErrors> tag should then have its "mode" attribute set to "Off".

    <!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

    <configuration>
        <system.web>
            <customErrors mode="Off"/>
        </system.web>
    </configuration>

    Notes: The current error page you are seeing can be replaced by a custom error page by modifying the "defaultRedirect" attribute of the application's <customErrors> configuration tag to point to a custom error page URL.

    <!-- Web.Config Configuration File -->

    <configuration>
        <system.web>
            <customErrors mode="RemoteOnly" defaultRedirect="mycustompage.htm"/>
        </system.web>
    </configuration>

    Sweet !

  • RAID failed again

    I've been running a SCSI RAID 10 on an Adaptec PCI card under Win2K for about 5 years. I've lost two different Seagate SCSI drives, but the hot spare always worked, and I've never lost any data.

    Of course, the e-mail notification never worked...  I had to see the light on the array for one, and the other via a pop-up message when I logged onto the server remotely...
