Hello to all of you Niners... So long for me to be here again... And to bother you with my old, old opinions...

I agree with Sampson from the moment such is the same thinking way of my ex-wife (but still my best friend); but... Isn't this revealing that we, the wise developers need to put a great attention and effort on teaching non-developer (read non-wise) people to
understand, at least, what are the factors that make a PC slow down?

Coffeehouse - SQL Express Managment problem

I installed every 2005 Express language, plus SQL and the Managment Studio and SQL Books Online, over the same machine (XP SP2) and haven't any problems using them... I followed the guidelines to intall given at the Visual Studio Site by using the automatic
unistall utility for the Beta 2 I already had... So I think order of installation as depicted in those guidelines are important... Perhaps you should try uninstalling and reinstalling again in the proper order.

Thank you Chung, but certainly I'm not, by any measures, any thing near to the Cervante's character... Even though, I have kept my self loving the image of any gentle knight, real or fictional, I had notice of... I think that gentleness is one of the most great
virtues for a man feel proud of... My mother used to say us when at fight between the brothers (we where 4 girls and 4 boys): "Gentleness don't steals any bravery of your heart".... Poor of my mam, she was truly tired of having started seen falling bombs
over his head when she was 10 years old... My primary and secondary school time was difficult to endure, not because the studying efforts, but because yet at the 60's, here in Mexico there where a lot of resentement targeted to Spanish people.

I agree with Microsoft in that, as intellectual property creators, they have to protect such assets, aside than in behalf its clients and stockholders, even standing before us the developers, whom certainly couldn't be enabled to grow and enjoy as developers,
without the Microsoft's endeavor in easing the attainability of "One computer for every home and every office" throughout the world... That world which is becoming more and more wide for every child been born today.

May only plea, is: "Be gentle"... As those knights whom deserve such a title not because they are willingly to raise promptly their swords... But because they keep their heart aware of the scent of a flower, the innocence in the children eyes, the hope in a
woman smile... And the dreams in the professionist mind.

Please Microsoft, be gentle when defending your selves.

I'm disappointed.... Truly disappointed... As disappointed as I was when at my 25 years I became disappointed because my father and have told him: "You are not any more my idol, I have seen your mudy feet"... I went feeling that way while I was reading
about the Microsoft vs. Google fight regarding Dr. Kai-Fu... Perhaps, such is not more than so many long years been used to think in Microsoft as my Entrepreneur's Paladin... Some thing very close to that image from my dreams, yet cherised, about the Lancelot's
Round Table Knights... I know very well my voice is not more than the shiny whisper of one who never have reached and never will reach the status of an acknowledged developer, just because I'm not but a single man from the street, who have gotten in touch
with programming to late, though never could get rid of the sweet and obnubilating wine programming is for the mind and the soul... I know my voice shouldn't be ever louder than the singing of a cricket....

I know, as well, that at my 60 years my interests have spreaded departing quite a lot from that whose makes of technology the ones life... Nowadays I'm mostly interested in the world my grand-grand-children and their mates throughout the Earth would see and
live in... I am intersted in that shining rainbow at the end of the road ahead, which from the beginning have been, is and will be a gift for every past, actual and future human being.
Please Microsoft, keep your selves been the knights I dreamed you ever have been.

Coffeehouse - Thoughts on Microsoft Branding & Meme's

Hi colleage... Would you let me attempt to share with you the way I have used through almost 40 years (I started in 1968 participating with the application of the Image for the Olympic Games in Mexico) designing Integrated Company/Branding Graphical Imagery?

Well... The first thing I ever do when re-designing an existing image, is to ask to my client, or to my self if it is for a proposal of my own, the following four questions, made in the order shown:

1) Whose are the concepts you want to "tell" about the Company or brand?

2) Whose are the graphical appreciation skills already developed by the mean of the targeted public intended to interpret such "iconic" language?

3) Whose are the state-of-the-art trends in graphical design?

4) Whose are the thecniques I have available to develop my solution and whose are the publishing thecnologies will be used to carry the imagery?

Makes this any sense to a nowadays smart and insightful Graphic Designer as the one you are Jamie?

Coffeehouse - Apple reviewers on Singularity - hilarious

Commenter Samuel R. Stoup wrote:

[...] But if it manages to survive without being assimilated by other business units, it still faces the dangerous path of being “too” successful. Right now
Singularity is being created by a small team of about 50 people. Due to its size and relative obscurity the programmers are fairly free to do what they want in the manner they feel to be best. But all that will change if Ballmer suddenly decides Singularity
will be his new pet project. Overnight the leaders of this “research project” could find that their staff has just increased to 3,000 strong (in true MS style bureaucracy 2,000 of which are managers). Suddenly with 18 layers of management and 93 required meetings
each week, Singularity becomes too heavily managed to complete any real work and eventually loses all of its innovative aspects. [...]

Certainly this man who also barks as a dog, have ever learned any thing out of the hierachichal organizational tree top-down schemes (mostly borrowed from the military), lack of knowledge understandable for people about my age, but: How old is he? ... Particularly
he is unaware of how an umbrella works.... That is to say: He ignores every thing about horizontal organizational structures, whose aren't built over "authorithy layers" but out of the networkings of strongly and tightly interrelated client<-->provider chains,
where peer-to peer (human) communication by word-of-mouth not by signed documents is essential.

You're right, I like this one particularly:
"Singularity = OS X

The only difference is that Apple is using UNIX, a base already created by someone else.
And M$ want to make a ‘UNIX’ of their own."

Anyone who would suggest that Singularity is even remotely like Unix really hasn't got
any idea what Singularity actually is. Comparint Singularity to OSX is even more rediculous, although I sorta see where that comes from if you take the article as fact.

I think this article is every thing but hilarious... To me it gets me in pity and sorrow for those people who can't understand what Research & Development is all about... And for those who still are utterly unable to understand the core point with Singularity...
That is: Reliability and every other of its features (stability, security, etc) achieved by means of SOFTWARE ISOLATING EVERY PROCESS RUNNING OVER THE KERNEL... Which is far ahead of pure managed code or any actual OS runtime approach...

But... Dogs ever bark when something misunderstood is on sight... As some guys also do.
Now I'm connecting from my son's PC... Nice to meet you again, that feels good very deep in the heart... I think I could be here a couple of hours (upon leaving home, my son have told me: "Don't go late to the bed", as last week I was in an illness surge)...

Thank you Eagle... I know very well what are you talking about... It's hard to get hired as a formal employee here at my age, no matter how much your knowledge or experttise would be, so my last job was as attendant of a Cybercoffe and I have seen the same
many times.

Thank you for your concern and encouragement "Tester amongst the Gods", I have missed a bit the dialogue with you so I feel happy to know you read my posts.

Thank you Jamie... I know who that man to the left is, though my look have changed a lot from that picture (I must update it as soon as I could)... Nowadays I use my by long years cherised bear and long hair (both almost white)... While I am ever waiting from
my dougther to came on visit, I know very well that as soon as she look me, she is going to request urgently for scisors and a comb... That look I have there, is his thoroughly done work last time she was here... A couple of days before that picture... Who
is the guy to the right?

And going on the initial topic of this thread, I would love to continue on elaborating on such a subject... Could it be?
Well, I don't think I could do anything close to an AI that was self-aware in the traditional sense. (Heck, a lot of AI is figuring out just what intelligence is). It is perhaps the holy grail of AI, I would say.

Have you thought in how is that you are aware of your own being?... I have done such from a while a go and ended with the conclusion that my self-awareness is a "process" outside my
psiche as the Greek called the soul... As far as I understand, the later is the complex whole which consists of the abilities to feel, think and will... In 1994, the Secretary of Education in Mexico, have briefly taught at the elementary school 1th
grade level, that the human being has 6 senses, the five tangible known from my childhood: hearing, sight, smell, touch and equilibration; and one more: the soul, which comprises the non-tangible sense which enables human beings to feel, think and will (I
have learned that from one of my grand-sons taking that grade at the time)... And I think now that the conciousness, is a kind of "monitoring process" over all those six senses.
