  • MS shuts down Chris Pirillo's VistaTorrent.com

I must have gotten lucky then, because when I downloaded Vista a couple of days ago off of the direct link provided on the Microsoft site, my connection speed didn't go below 400 KB/s. Must have been a fluke... and I'm jumping through two wireless routers to connect to a cable connection.

  • Vista Beta 2 Performance Information

I've been running Vista for a couple of days now, and overall I'm impressed with how the operating system has come along. I have however noticed that the performance of this release lags far behind XP SP2. I realise that this is a Beta 2 release, but I find some of the issues to be perplexing given the fact that the operating system is based off of the Server 2003 code base.

For example, loading a burnt data DVD into the optical drive and attempting to navigate through the DVD is painfull. It takes roughly 10 seconds to load up a directory listing. Now I realize that this could all be attributed to driver problems what with the system being in Beta and all, and my system specifications (listed below) could also be a contributing factor.

I've done a rough search for blog postings or something from someone within Microsoft of a substantive position to comment on the performance levels of Vista Beta 2, but have come up with nothing. This could very well have already been discussed here, as I'm late to the party, but I haven't been able to find anything here either.

So basically, once you get down to it, I'd like to know what Microsoft has said that we should expect when it comes to performance from Vista Beta 2, and what kind of performance we should expect from Vista RC1.

    System Specifications:
    AMD Athlon XP 3200+
    1GB PC3200 RAM
ATI Radeon 9600 XT All In Wonder
    BenQ DVD Drive

    Hi! Good find!

I am on the Windows Shell Team and I just looked into this. This is definitely not the designed behavior, it is a bug. The issue is known and has been fixed in recent builds.

We just verified that it is working correctly on the Beta 2 build.

Thanks for your feedback. Feel free to message me if you have any questions related to the shell or windows explorer.

    Thanks,
    David

I've just installed the Beta 2 build that is now publicly available, but I'm having problems editing ID3 tag information from the Details tab on the File Properties window. Could you provide some more information regarding the status of this fix? Thank you.

  • Going to get a small server

If your server is going to be playing multiple roles, I'd suggest splurging on some RAM. I was using my desktop as a dedicated server with 1GB of RAM. It was running as a webserver and print server, as well as a file server for my internal network. Did the job quite well. Only running an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ as a proc, which is a decent little piece of engineering Wink

  • Bluetooth Cell Phone Back-Up

I've been searching the internet for a solution to a problem that we have at work. We need the ability to back-up a bluetooth cellphone (text messages, contacts, etc.). We have many different brands of cellphones, and I have found some software on the internet that is capable of interfacing with multiple brands of phones, but I'm wondering if just purchasing a bluetooth adapter for our PC will allow us to copy the data over manually.

So the question is, if I hook up a bluetooth adapter to my PC and connect to a bluetooth phone through that, what kind of access will I get on the phone. Will I be able to copy over contacts, etc?

Anyone have a cheap software solution that they can recomend if this is not possible with Windows out of the box?

    Thanks.

  • Unofficial "New Vista Users" Signal/Noise Thread

They aren't too widespread... I've had my name on the list for as long as I can remember. Just checked my email and, unfortunately, there was no beta invite. Could anyone hook me up so I can be on this bandwaggon? Wink

  • Server

There are many things you could do... there are several FOSS projects that will enable you to turn that box into a full fledged DHCP server/firewall, or a PBX box. Those are the two most interesting options to me, other than hosting a file server.

I just installed Server 2003 on my box tonight so that I can get back into C# Development... if you can get your hands on that (if the system can handle it) you could play around with that?

If I'm not mistaken, there are computer resellers out there shipping PC's without a floppy drive.

Also, there is a utility out there, can't quite recall the name although it's on the tip of my tongue, which will allow you to customize an XP install disk to include whatever drivers you require. I believe that you can include the RAID drivers, burn the customized bootable install disk, and you're on your way.

I think the application is called BartPE... although I could be wrong.

  • Vista will have WINFX installed by DEFAULT!

As I've said, thats just my interpretation of what he told me. I didn't exactly have all the time in the world to query him on the subject. I had maybe a 20 second window of time...

  • Vista will have WINFX installed by DEFAULT!

I spoke with a new project manager on the WPF team the other day. He's just been on board for about a month but I asked him how things were going and if they were still slated for a release in tandem with Vista. He said that they were, but that Vista isn't going to be making much use of WPF out of the box.

I guess this means that it won't be installed by default and that the sidebar still won't support WPF widgets. Just my analysis of what he said.
