Re: Kinect-cart... A prototype Kinect-enabled Shopping cart

Cool prototype. Didn't see it in the demo but I imagine produce would be a significant issue with such a cart/checkout system. While I'd be tempted to build a scale into the cart I think it might be more cost effective and reliable to have the cart interface with a fixed digital scale and perhaps use Kinect's optics for "produce" recognition. Beyond this, the biggest technical issue imo is how you build-in reliable/upgradeable shoplifting safeguards without doubling unit costs. You can imagine how much easier it is to secure the stationary self-checkout registers we have today (simple weight checks, fixed cameras in addition to human attendants). I hope the project continues to get funded though.

One fundamental change I would make to this prototype right off the bat would be to lose the robotic wheels, place the scanner on the front-edge of the cart (in view of the Kinect optics)...to maximize space for merchandise and even allow customers to immediately bag their items. Green LEDs in the handlebar would indicate to personnel that cart items are cleared to leave the building with the customer.

posted by USArcher

Re: Dean Hachamovitch: IE9 - Questions and Answers

@Charles/Dean, thank you for making this Q&A video.

Dean's response to ZippyV's question regarding plugins was insightful. My personal opinion is that the traditional plugin model (for any browser) is a dead end.

I should have been more specific with my question regarding touch. IE9's chrome was the intended target. So thanks Dean, you did the best he could with a open question like that. If I had to reframe the question, it would be around usability testing and ui design philosophy. I could be very wrong, but I don't think the IE9 team does enough testing when it comes to touch. Now many of the same issues (ex. context menus, scaling) affect the rest of Windows as well. I just thought with 60% of PC usage centered around web browsing and the coming wave of slates/tablets that IE would be the precursor (similiar to Office Ribbon or Zune UI) of what eventually will need to be done with Windows v.Next and touch.

The question about webslices rose from the removal (hidden) Feeds icon in the default IE9 Beta chrome. That suggested to me that Microsoft was backing away from this. Sure you can move your mouse over content to see if there are webslices to be had. Though thats not the way I would want to discover content. It will diminish webslice uptake. Maybe there is a better way, so I was glad to see Dean churn for a brief moment on the idea of previewing webslices from a pinned site. I actually think pinned sites are the way to go long term. Possibly leading to removal of the traditional favorites bar, etc... Instead let the act of pinning a site subscribe the user to related RSS feeds and webslices in one shot. To do this, pinned site jumplists would need a way to interface with the IE Feed Store/Sync. An additional user benefit, users wouldn't need a full brower session just to preview updated webslice/rss...providing an enhanced app like experience. I don't pretend to have thought this through (your job IE team) but I believe there are more ways to leverage pinned sites.

Re: Bookmarklets: RoboForm is one of the better ones out there. Personally, I'd get more out of having accellerators listed in an easy to access icon (on the default IE chrome) instead of being accessed through a context popup menu.

Thanks again!!

posted by USArcher

Three questions:

- Is there a way to configure an embedded Office document to go fullscreen as opposed to a popup browser window? I prefer how the vast majority of web content viewers/players work.

- Are you looking to support playing Slideshow from the embedded PowerPoint viewer?

- Are you looking to support viewing pen/ink in OneNote web app?

Btw, I really hope you add XPS and/or PDF viewers to the Office Web App suite.

Thanks

posted by USArcher

Re: Gigabyte’s Booktop T1125 Offers Three Form Factors for the Price of One

I definitely think these docks are where things are going with Convertibles and Slates. The T1125 looks like it is a pretty lightweight device...and thats great. At $1299 though, this is a bit pricey in my opinion. You can get a HP TM2 for $850 today and that includes a wacom stylus. One other critique about this particular dock station...its not clear it has a HDMI port which is crucial if you want to playback any protected content. Also, I would have much preferred a dock that lets you seat the device at an angle.

posted by USArcher

Re: Watch What You Shout At the TV - It May Be Able to Hear You

Love the premise behind this, it really minimizes the need for menu navigation so you can enjoy content and not the menu UI so much. I might be way off, but I believe they are pretty much using the built-in speech capabilities in Windows 7. Finally someone has a real voice application and included a voice other than Ana. The one thing I really wish it did like Kinect though, is detect who is speaking instead of having to say "I am {yourname}" to switch profiles.

It also has me thinking how I would sync speech profiles between other media center PCs. Something for the Live Mesh team? Frankly with Kinect coming out, Microsoft should be looking at voice profile syncing not only between PCs but also between XBox, PC and Phone.

posted by USArcher
