Coffeehouse - Open letter to Microsoft: I'm jumping ship! ...and will no longer develop for your platform.

Hello everyone,

This is an open letter to Microsoft. I'm sure that I speak for many other developers as well. I will make it as short as possible:

Desktop is now "legacy".

New Visual Studio "express" forces you to only do Metro.

Metro is the "future".

Metro "apps" ( yeah, I puke over that word too ) MUST be distributed via "Windows marketplace". ( yeah, nice Orwellian name )

After forcing you to use it, Microsoft TAKES 30% OF YOUR SALES. ( yeah, LOL )

http://channel9.msdn.com/Forums/Coffeehouse/Windows-8-I-am-truely-worried-and-I-need-answers

http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2012/05/no-cost-desktop-software-development-is-dead-on-windows-8/

Very important point so I write it twice: Microsoft TAKES 30% OF YOUR SALES. "Your" PC is no longer "Yours". You MUST use Windows marketplace.

The road ahead is most clear. I'm glad I did not use any of those fancy new "MVC" stuff. Remember I told you that one ALWAYS must have an EXIT PLAN? (http://channel9.msdn.com/Forums/Coffeehouse/Questions-regarding-Web-pages-vs-Web-forms-vs-MVC)

Blame the marketing department, blame Ballmer, blame Sinofsky or whatever but GREAT JOB for killing your development base. THAT is for sure.

So Microsoft, I have been developing for your platform since the 1990s but I have had it with you.

Your Windows 8 Metro "sexual" dance didn't do it for me, your forced 30% cut of my sales wasn't a pleasant date offer either... no reason at all to develop for your platform anymore.

I can do my stuff in Delphi cross platform galore, I can do my stuff in Java or PHP... H*LL, I CAN DO MY STUFF IN UNITY3D... write once... run EVERYWHERE.

Forget it, you aren't worth the headache anymore.

You have one developer less.

I'm jumping ship.

Coffeehouse - Google Maps for NES

It is rather disgusting to watch how Google tries to be "cute".

The added "Hollywood" hue, a slight darkened light as if there is something wrong with the camera or it's a cloudy day makes me sick to my stomach. It's EVERYWHERE. They forgot to add the teal and orange filter on it this time.

It's their signature. As soon as you see these colors and filters, you know they got an angenda. From "blogs" to what not, it's really too easy to spot.

Oh, and don't forget the obligatory camera shake on EVERYTHING too. Like, yeah man, they are trying to be "hip" the mobile camera recording generation and all that. Hollywood, TV, commercials, Google... and YES... Channel 9 teal and orange... no exceptions.

But hey, they sure know advertising.

NOT EVERYONE ARE IN SLEEP. ( Yes, you know I'm talking to who. )

Coffeehouse - New trend in scrollbars

Well, I don't know. I mean, I haven't tried OS X lately.

It strikes me as odd to hide something from the view or make it almost completely invisible to casual eye when this something has an important functionality WHILE the user is using/reading the page.

One of the important things I learned in university is to have visual feedbacks and good visual clues for users.

There was a fun book on userfriendliness, I can't remember the title for the life of me but it talked about how doors and door knobs we make would seem really puzzling and odd to an alien from outer space. All doors work differently and no clue is given from their knobs etc. Fun read.

Coffeehouse - New trend in scrollbars

Windows 7 / Vista they both have almost "invisible" scrollbars. I have seen in Android and I think in IE10 in Windows 8 too that not only the scrollbars are so super thin, they also "disappear" out of the view.

It might "look nice" but it sure isn't userfriendly. I really hate that. I can't tell where in a page I stand specially when I'm reading something.

I find it an annoying trend.

Your thoughts?

The same goes with for example Google-"cloud"-anything. But imagine if you were lock-in in a way, you couldn't get your data out with ease from the "cloud". That is bad business eventhough it's a nice and fast start.

A business must be able to dictate conditions as much as possible not be dictated conditions hence, one must be worried about lock-ins.

I'm not saying MVC is all evil, don't use it.
