Coffeehouse - Annoying new type of web ad on msnbc

I agree that when a website is ad supported they deserve to make their money and that won't happen if you block their ads.
However it is also the responsibility of the advertiser to ensure that their adverts are tried & tested in every major browser and don't break essential functionality.

Loss of scroll wheel use is seriously taking the biscuit but recently a lot of websites have been breaking this functionality.
Come on web developers! Get it sorted!

Coffeehouse - Can't connect to wireless networks in Server 2008

Hi all,
I recently decided to scrap my project on W2k3 server and start on W2k8 server (with vstudio 2008). Unfortunately I only have my laptop spare for the install, and one of the most important things I use it for is connecting to WLANs.

Now on Vista the wlan card is fine and when searching for networks a rather huge list always manages to be found. However when on Server 2008 (using same drivers and tried so many others) the card is found, I can search for networks but it finds nothing.

I recon it's either got to be Server 2008 doesn't connect to WLAN, it creates them OR the programming in the OS isn't finished yet OR the card isn't supported.

I have looked in the help which I did presume to be rather lacking during the beta, and it just says check the Windows Vista HCL. I haven't done so but the fact my pc was built for vista I presume the hardware is fine.

Has anyone else had this problem with Codename Longhorn beta 3? Or is it not a problem and I'm just trying to do something that can't be done?

Thanks in advance for anyones help

My memory is random, i call a number once or twice and i'll remember it and be able to recall it anytime. Same goes for passwords, pins, ccard no's.

Long term is pretty good but at times only certain things seem to stick in my head (usually things im interested in/care about).

Short term varies from amazing to absolutely terrible. What did my friend say on the phone 2 minutes ago? No point in asking me, but what all have I downloaded in the last day or 2? I can give you the entire list including filesize, time taken and the ratio
it last had when I checked the torrent proggy! Now where did I leave my cigs?

Coffeehouse - It's Official: Windows Vista RC1 Is Complete

I downloaded it in around 45 minutes at 1.10MB/s the whole way
Burned to DVD and installed on my media center box (that I use every single day for watching tv and scheduled recordings).

One thing I've noticed from Beta 2 is that the boot time has improved from 45 seconds to 35 seconds on my P4 3GHz/512MB/128MB Nvidia FX5200/120GB IDE.

Another is that media center actually runs now! If you tried it in beta 2 (at least for me) I couldn't stably even play an mp3 file. Now TV works just perfect with the latest nvidia beta driver + purevideo decoder. So does DVD playback and
music.

The new interface on MCE I love, when watching TV most of the on screen display shows up over the tv with transparacy, very nice

And when you use the up/down buttons you can scroll through the channels with a short description of what's on air.

Unfortunately there's pretty much nothing else ever used on this box so I've not had a chance to test it out for much else yet but for the media center 2005 user that doesn't use anything else it's ready to upgrade

Coffeehouse - Media Centre Edition on XP Pro

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 is exactly like Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 except it doesn't allow domain login and there's a couple of other things. It allows IIS if you insert an xp (with sp2 slipstreamed) cd then go add/remove programs,
windows comps.

There are a couple of things different though. Media Center has an improved start menu (the colours don't burn your eyes, they look nice :O). Also it's arguable that Media Center has had optimisations to explorer and other stuff that makes it run a lot faster.

Note: There's no drivers for the XP MCE remote control so you need Windows XP Media Center Edition installed for drivers. No workarounds IIRC.

Tech Off - Recommendations for minimum specs

I am looking to build a little server to host all of our extranet services.

Server will be assuming the roles of:
File Server
Application Server
Domain Controller (Active Directory)
DNS Server
DHCP Server
Streaming Media Server

Will also require Exchange 2003 Standard with MS SQL 2005.

From recommendations I think the minimum spec will have to be:

P4 2.8GHz (533MHz FSB)
2GB DDR Ram
80GB HDD
100Mbit NIC, 10Mbit connectivity.

anyone care to agree/disagree?

Tech Off - Installing Exchange 2003 on Server 2003 with SP1

Ok that's gonna check it out in a bit but I don't think I will be as the only users with relay permissions are my account & the other 3 staff accounts on the box.

Now, I'm trying to setup a 2nd domain but not sure how I would go about it as the domain controller assigns all users @xurial.net...so i presume exchange would do the same, but some of the users cannot have xurial.net e-mail accounts as they are for staff.

Instead I want to allow certain people to have xn3.net e-mails. I have configured DNS, it's not changed yet but ready to be, just need to know what needs to be done in Exchange.

I have added an SMTP Connector for the domain.

Cheers all

Tech Off - Installing Exchange 2003 on Server 2003 with SP1

Ah! I see now! I had only set it up to allow myslef & another exchange user to use that at all (including relaying perms).

No-one ever told me you needed SMTP to receive mail, I really thought it was only for sending :/ my bad.

Also 'silly accounts like test:test' i have exchange installed and before that didn't create any accounts. So now, the only way to set passwords is to have those big bad boy heavily secure passwords.

Also I rarely ever have accounts on a box that aren't used

Tech Off - Installing Exchange 2003 on Server 2003 with SP1

Ok I've tried this twice today without success I'm clearly doing something, somewhere, wrong.

My network setup is rather confusing but basically it's like this:

Internet -> XP Pro box -> Server -> Network Switch -> Parents Laptops & other wired desktop boxes.

The firewall and NAT software is hosted on the XP Pro box and so currently it is all achieved by port forwarding. I haven't experienced any problems with this yet except DNS setting entries to the internal IP address by default but I changed that.

So on to the Exchange install. I followed the check list and all the tests etc finished good. Got it installed fine. Read up on the error message saying I have to apply SP1 or SP2 or it won't work so thought sure thing I'll install SP2.

Now I also setup an SMTP Connector for my primary domain xurial.net. The domain is setup in the local DNS server however is still hosted on other nameservers and I have set an A record for mail.xurial.net to my external IP and CNAMED the MX record to mail.xurial.net.

I try to send out mail from Exchange and it works fine, even to remote servers, so relaying is working. I try to receive mail however with no luck.

MX has been changed probably 2-4 hours however when I looked up mail.xurial.net I instantly had the new IP, same with everyone else I got to try it so hopefully it should have updated.

I setup the mailboxes by simply adding users to Active Directory. It may be worth noting I added the SMTP connector after I setup the AD users & mailboxes. I also setup Recipient Policies for SMTP or something, can't remember the exact term.

I'm still not receiving mail, port 25 incoming TCP is forwarded to the box (I missed this until recently! *oops*)

So anyone got any ideas why this aint working? Could it just be i'm being impatient and the MX change hasn't propogated or should I be worried I've screwed up?

Regards,

Tech Off - Windows has no drivers?

I'm trying to install a Realtek 8029AS (yes old) NIC. Anyway I can't get a driver because it's "included in Windows XP" but in device manager its trying to add the card but has no drivers (at all) even in the network cards area.

Is there a way I can get the drivers off the install cd? Like fixmbr in the recovery console?
