A team led by Eugenio Pace at p&p has been busy working on the Claims based Identity and Access Control guide. We are thrilled to announce the availability of early drafts. Check out the CodePlex project site at http://claimsid.codeplex.com.

In this video, Eugenio Pace gives an overview of this project and the scenarios that are covered in this guide. This guide will introduce you to “claims-based” identity, a set of ideas and tools that may make it easier for you to build features like autorization, authentication and personalization into your apps in a more flexible way. In this guide, we’ll introduce some concepts that may sound new: claims, federated identity, and much more.

Enterprise Library has been downloaded over 2 million times. We hit that mark last week and the team celebrated this milestone with a cake. (See picture).

We are now working on version 5.0 of Enterprise Library. The main themes for v5.0 are:

Enhanced user experience
Simplicity
Learnability and discoverability

This video demonstrates how to use the SharePoint Guidance Library’s configuration component. Configuration providers such as feature receivers use the IConfigManager interface to set values while configuration consumers such as web parts use the IHierarchicalConfig interface to retrieve values.

patterns & practices has produced few guides related to testing (including performance testing, security testing of web apps, and testing of .NET application blocks). However, we have heard a lot of requests from our customers for guidance on testing and test strategy in general. Based on the feedback, we started a project last year to build guidance on acceptance testing.

What is acceptance testing?

Working definitions for a number of terms are available in our Draft Glossary. The current definition that is framing our work and discussions is:

Acceptance Testing: Planned evaluation of a system by customers/customer proxies to assess to what degree it satisfies their expectations.

p&p Data Access Guidance project - 1st drop available now! [p&p Data Access Guidance project - 1st drop available now!]

At p&p, we started a project a few months back to provide guidance on how to build data access layers that use common patterns like Repository and Unit of Work using Microsoft's data access technologies. We called this the "Data Access Guidance" project . Don Smith, whom many of you know from his work with the p&p Web Service Factory, is the PM leading this project. The team just posted the very first public drop from this project to CodePlex. You can download it from here.

As we mentioned in our earlier post, we release a drop from our SharePoint Guidance project every two weeks which is the duration of our iteration. We released Drop 10 to our CodePlex project site last week. In this webcast, Erwin van der Valk and Francis Cheung are discussing the changes that have been made in iteration 10 of the SharePoint developer Guidance. The primary focus of iteration 10 was to create and extend couple of reusable assets that can help you to create better SharePoint applications:

A Hierarchical configuration manager, that allows you to store configuration values at the Farm level, allow you to override them in lower levels.
A generic Service Locator for sharepoint that stores it’s typemappings in config.
A Sitemap provider that stores it’s sitemap in hierarchical config.
Reusable workflow activities for SubSite creation, that help you to implement your own SubSite creation process.

With the conclusion of this iteration, the SharePoint Guidance v2.0 project is now feature complete. The next iterations will focus primarily on bug fixes, documentation and quickstarts.

As we mentioned in our earlier post, we release a drop from our SharePoint Guidance project every two weeks which is the duration of our iteration. We released Drop 9 to our CodePlex project site last week. In this webcast, Erwin van der Valk and Francis Cheung discuss the improvements that have been made in iteration 9 of the SharePoint Developer Guidance V2. In this iteration the team focused mainly on improving the code. For example, the fake SSO provider has been replaced by a solution that follows the trusted façade pattern. Also, the WCF proxies and their repositories have been refactored and improved quite a bit. This video guides you through many of the improvements that have been made in the iteration.

As promised in our earlier post, here is the very first screen cast based on the most recent drop. This video gives you a quick tour of what is in the bi-weekly iteration drop from the p&p SharePoint Guidance v2.0 project.

We released Drop 6 to our CodePlex project site on 3/27th. In this video, Erwin van der Valk and Francis Cheung, developers in the SharePoint Development Guidance project, gives a quick tour of what’s in store in Drop 6.

We are demonstrating several ways to access SharePoint list including:

· content query web part

· portal site map provider and

· cross site collection using the SP object model and search.

In this video, we also demonstrate how to use caching with the business data catalog (BDC) and how to cache published pages.

patterns & practices released SharePoint development guidance v1 back in November of last year. Check out this video for a brief overview and the patterns used.

As you may know, we are working on the next version of the guidance which will cover:

Enterprise Quality

· Tested and well understood scale characteristics

· Performance tuned application utilizing techniques to achieve high throughput and scale

· Manageable - configurable with instrumentation and diagnostics

Content Driven Applications

· An application that mixes authoring and development

· Composite oriented with more loosely coupled application logic

· Employees content authoring and WCM(including publishing)

Extending LOB Systems

· Securely integrates LOB system information with collaboration and publishing scenarios

· Demonstrates techniques for managing connectivity to LOB systems (BDC, credential management and SSO, WCF,etc)

We run two week iterations and release the source code and guidance from each of these iterations into our CodePlex project site. We are planning to do a video with every drop that will guide you through the content.
