As has been mentioned already C# is not the best thing to use for a cheap project as you requested.

Could I suggest the PIC Microcontroller from Microchip. You can get free (Lite) C compilers. You'll pick up C quickly if you know C#. Microchip do little demo boards which have a microcontroller and prototype area on them. Maybe something like a PicKit will do.

Again, I know its not a C# suggestion.

I use these devices for little projects myself. Almost everything on one chip. Useful little chips.

  • Is there some serious problem with the recent critical updates from Microsoft?

I don't have the lock up problems you describe but I am suddenly having problems with emails. Any emails I send from either Outlook or Windows Mail, people who receive emails from me are shown the MIMI contents of the email, not the rendered version.

I have looked at the raw file that is created in the Outbox folder and  it seems that a 'boundary' section is missing from the email. I gather
that when the receiving client receives this faulty structured email  it doesn't know what to do with it so just displayes the whole lot.

As I said, never had an issue until yesterday so can't help wondering if something has been changed in the last round of Microsoft updates which happened on 12-12-2008?

I'm waiting til tomorrow to see if my works PC is suffering with the same problem.

  • 3d on the brain..

    Jamie,

I do not believe that this is the first time you have jumped out of bed when your brain has gone into overdrive. Could I suggest hot chocolate before bed as opposed to coffee. Sleep will come much easier Smiley

I recommend the book for 70-536 (Foundations of .NET) from MS Press.

Yeah, I do had that book a while before I started the Ramp Up series. I just thought that Ramp Up would aid me in the learning process. I did find that some of the answers to the sample questions in the book contradicted the text though.

Its a shame really. Ramp Up gives you 50% off the MCTS exam if you pass the online assessment but it seems they still have issues with the service.

The waiting 5 days for an email reply is a bit much too.

  • Microsoft Ramp Up

Just wondered if anyone here has joined the Microsoft Ramp Up program. If so, has anyone finished it without any problems?

I started a few months back. Have been playing with C# for nearly a year. Have been a VC++ programmer for over 10 years. Chose the Aspiring Developer track (C#) as I don't have VB or Java background and thought it'd be better if I started at the beginning. I want to go ahead and take my MCTS so I'm taking this as a familiarisation exercise with the way Microsoft structure their exams, learning etc.

Anyways, I completed the first 2 assessments ok and came to take my 3rd one a couple of weeks ago. However, the first question had code samples in VB. As I stepped through more and more of them I found all the code questions were VB (although the page title is C# track) and most of the questions were todo with modules that I'd not progressed to yet (ASP and data tables which I think are level 5).

I emailed Microsoft about this but it takes 5 days for that section to reply everytime I point out what the problem is and that it is nothing to do with what they suggested.

Does this sound familiar to anyone?

Everyone mooches around until the intro ceremony in the main audotorium, a Very Big Room. Until then everyone either on their way or stuffing down the complimentary danish pastries in the other Big Room used for no other purpose.

After the introduction you then make your way off to the first seminar in your track. You'll be provided with a fold-up map with a list of room numbers which correspond with the room numbers on your seminar list.

Repeat twice until Lunch time, then everyone squeezes into the Big Room for free fine italian foodage and networking.

Then back to the seminars another 3 times, then you have an outro in the Very Big Room. As you leave the audotorium you're given one (1) piece of paper with a unique number on and a URL.

When you get home, you go onto the Internets and visit the URL on said piece of paper, enter your unique number and delivery address, allow up to 28 days for delivery then have fun with your new looks-crap-on-XP Visual Studio IDE.

Thanks for that. Free food and free stuff. Should be an interesting day. And maybe I'll bump into some niners

Should I just switch browsers to another one where the designers didn't think to bind random keys to clear text areas?

Yes you should. Glad I could help.

Are you expecting a better answer after your style of asking questions (moronic, rats)

  • VS2008 Launch UK : registration open

I've just registered for this and have got my confirmation.

I've never been to one of these things before. What sort of things happen? Do you go to a room, sit down then listen to a speaker. When finished goto another and listen to another speaker. I really don't have a clue what to expect. Any insight from someone would be great.
