Coffeehouse - A Comet for the Record Books

"I am not a believer nor a fan of these things, but the timing is interesting and curious to say the least."

lol, according to Nostradamus the event you mention should have happen in 1995. We are 5 yrs(and 8 months) delayed because of a mistake the guy who created our current calendar made. He calculated the birth of christ by counting Roman emperor's reigns, the
problem is, one of the emperors reign duration was wrong, 5yrs less. So, we're not in 2k7, this is 2011, the world should have ended by 1995, and another funny thing, when the three magi arrived jesus was already 8 months old, and the star they followed was
actually.. not a star, it was Jupiter(AFAIRemember) which 2000yrs ago looked like a star and had an orbit in which it appeared to stop in the sky for a few days(marking 'the spot') before inverting direction. lol funny stuff eh?

btw, they were all persians, and their heads are in France, an old man, middle aged and a younger one.

Coffeehouse - Newton video

The WM Team could learn something from UIQ HWR, the best I've ever used. It doesn't steal any screen area for the SIP, and has an excelent accuracy(as fast as writting on paper in my case). They divided the screen in 2 main areas and a horizontal middle
line, in the top you write the symbols and numbers, on the bottom all letters, and in the center line( indicated only by a small arrow tip on the right ) every letter is recognized as uppercase. By doing so the HWR has a reduced scope of posibilities, like
they did with Vista Voice Recog. limit the number of possibilities to improve accuracy.

I know WM has something similar(Letter Recognizer), but it takes up some screen space and isn't as accurate. Also, it is possible UIQ's solution is patented.

Coffeehouse - Last post, bye bye Channel 9...

Hey look, a translation.

"Como havia dito em alguns posts atrás, e assim também como o Guilherme Gall citou sobre o furor evangelista dos adoradores da Microsoft, fiquei incomodado com os paranóicos fãs da Micro$oft do fórum Channel 9. Alguns deles são agressivos quando alguém cita
as facilidades do linux por ser open source, mas nada que abale ambas as partes, mas assim como já postei neste fórum, o maior furor entre esta comunidade é o ceticismo anti-Google, anti MSN e afins.

Has I said a few posts back, and also as Guilherme Gall quoted about the evangelist furor of the Microsoft lovers, I was bothered with the paranoid Micro$oft fans from the Channel9 Forum. Some of them get aggressive when someone quotes the benefits derived
from Linux open source origins, but just as I have already posted on this forum(Channel9), the biggest furor among that community is the scepticism towards anti-Google/MSN & related.

Acompanhando o thread:

Accompanying the thread:( hard to guess eh? lol )

Which is better Windows Live Custom Domains or Google Apps?
Posted by shreyasonline // Sun, Dec 3, 2006 3:37 AM
Has anyone tried both Windows Live Custom Domains and Google Apps ... can you tell which service is better and why ?
Google Apps delivery a start page, gtalk with your domain, google pages for website hosting end gmail, better than hotmail interface...

Darbacour Sun, Dec 3 2006 3:11 AM
This is an uneducated reply but personally I shun away from 'We will never do anything evil' Bad. wrong...... whatever the quote was..
To a company that embraced giving AOL their algorythyms and keyword placement and formed a deal that M/S found unethical.
Personally I NOW always try to use MSN search before I venture into the the slimy Google LIARS Den.

Patada 2: -------------------------------

Darbacour Sun, Dec 3 2006 6:00 AM
One other VERY important point to keep in mind; should you choose to use Google.... every e-mail you send or receive will be indexed.
I personally refuse to resond to G-mail for anything other than the most superfulous comminications

Patada 3: -------------------------------

Darbacour Sun, Dec 3 2006 8:44 AM
I have an insanely popular website.
I get 2-3 hundred SPAMs a day.
My #1 writer uses Gmail I don't want the contents of our e-mails published...Sadly they are ALL Google indexed.
Google spiders IGNORE my robot text... I find that indescribably intrusive and very BAD... even though Google promised to never do anything BAD...
Disregarding my robot.txt is BAD
Microsoft respects my privacy and doesn't publish any and everything I do on the net!
Google signed an agreement to allow AOL to always rise to the top of their pages... AOL counter MS and asked if they would give them the sam consideration. Microsoft said it was unethical and refused.
Bottom line is don't do business with pond scum ... if it costs a little more to do business with a reputable company.......... pay the toll. it's worth it.

Patada 4: -------------------------------

Darbacour Sun, Dec 3 2006 11:01 AM
"Darbacour, are you saying that Google makes your emails search-able to the public? I mean, I don't know how your privacy is supposedly compromised just for using Gmail."
Of course I am.
Are YOU telling me you weren't aware of that 'feature' of G-mail?
I also love (DESPISE) how Google's spiders totally ignore robot.txt
I didn't originally see your last insulting comment:
I don't think you'll find many fair and unbiased opinions here, though...
Personally I've seen opinions ALL over the place....with NO editing which I really like... of course I'm not at Fox.com to get truly 'Fair and balanced' opinions.
Sorry I'm a Libertarin, not a Neo-Con.

--------------------------------

Essas são somente as 1ºs de todo o thread onde este usuário "Darbacour" participou ativamente, muitas vezes com textos em negrito e caixa alta.

The are only the first ones from the whole thread where the user "Darbacour" actively participated, often with bold and highly visible text(font-size-wise).

No último post publicado aqui ele diz ser um libertário (um partidário da doutrina do livre-arbítrio), eu fico pensando... o que ele quiz dizer com isso sob um ambiente by Micro$oft??? Só rindo... e muito.

In his last post he declares himself as a liberal, and I think to myself... what did he mean by that being on a Micro$oft environment??? You gotta laugh... a lot.

Well, discounters apart( this isn't the first time I'm bothered with fierce google/Linux/other companies/systems and applications haters) ), neither is that the reason why I'm leaving that forum. I'm leaving simply because of the fact that I'm not notified
about replies to my messages.

-------------------------------

"2. Email is web 1.0 technology. You can get an RSS feed per topic."

heh, unfortunately C9's RSS is kind of weird, new posts on old threads make those threads come back to the surface. Logic when browsing the forum, but not when receiving the RSS feed since there's no distinction between threads. The Topic Feed should only spit
out the Topics ordered by date, C9's Topic Feed behaves more like a topic activity feed.

Coffeehouse - SharePoint experiences?

"I don't know how it compares to other portal solutions"

Well, the first contact I had with Portal Apps was Sharepoint 2007, played around a couple of days with it, reading several blogs and watching the vids on C9 and testing it, its logic requires a certain learning curve, I found the hierarchy a little weird,
as far as I remember you cannot change the HOME to be a sub site and vice-versa, the order wich you create the portal will define its hierarchy, but I found it to be a really really nice solution, and way way better than SAP Portal for exempli gratia(lol).

The company where I work at has already customized and sold a few Sharepoint 2007 (beta!) portals, so its quite stable even as a beta, the other solution I'm familiar with, SAP Portals, is the devil's work, quite an awful piece of java excrement.

Yeah, but FF's flaws are not as exploited as IE's(afaik), and that makes the difference.
I seriously doubt this. I haven't heard of this before.

Oh, and probably 90% FF & 10% IE for me.

It is true though, Forms and PNG transparency are two examples of dx within IE.

As for browser preference, I used to like Opera for its speed, customization and out-of-the-box features, but then I started to experience lots of compatibility issues(I hadn't realized that until i browsed some of my favourite sites with FF), caused by their
dev philosophy, Opera Devs focus on having one perfect feature instead of creating 10 non-polished features and improve them thereafter. Plus, their choice of features really started to get doubtful, what's with those widgets... wouldn't it be better to include
extensions like FF? Because that's what made me and many other people switch from Opera to FF, forget about possible security dangers, extensions are the key.

So, I now use FF full-time, IE and Opera for testing since I must create sites which are cross-browser, standards and WAI compliant( quite a paradox with IE in the game eh? )

It would be perfect if Opera included support for FF extensions, but that is never going to happen.

edit: and as for FF2.0, since FF's value is on the extensions, i'll not be using it until all my extensions are compatible with it.

Apple today released a new seed of their upcoming Leopard operating system, build 9A283. It requires a fresh installation, so upgrades aren't possible at the moment. There are also a host of known issues.

- New Parental Controls preference pane allows you to limit access to the

Coffeehouse - The better desktop search

Hey, I also agree the crtl+ctrl -> popup search box, is the right approach, how about a win+win? =)

GDS indexes too many filetypes, since the search problem has been solved in Vista, I propose something like:

win+win -> popup context search box based on the foreground application, if the app is recognized as browser the search will have a scope on favourites or other browser related things, if it is an explorer window the scope will be on files of that folder, like
Vista, if Desktop search all files.

This behaviour could be changed via options menu, all files no matter the scope, or a keyword: ALL:searchstring, MAIL:searchstring.

Would be nice, no?

I'm currently on XP since Vista doesn't support dual monitors correctly and my PCMCIA datacard cannot be used with it, gives me an hardware error when trying to initialize it*, and the reason why I don't use any Desktop Search solution is because all of them
fail to return the correct results, I like GDS search interface the most, in terms of usability, the results are presented right in the middle of the screen and you don't need to use the mouse to access the search box, but that's about it, i cannot change
the scope effectively on all of them, except Vista, and the results are a mix of program configuration/log files and the ones I want, quite annoying, since I'm very organized I rather search for the files manually.

*oh BTW, the connect team told me they are working on it, but, it seems that public beta testers don't have the right to view the Connect Team feedback, and in my case it made it impossible for me to supply them details about my hardware, cool eh? Sort
of breaks the beta testing objective.

So, in my opinion, add ctrl+ctrl/win+win shortcuts and make it easier to change the scope.

" Try placing ALL the list items on one line"

Tech Off - accessible CSS menus in IE

Well, the idea is to create a cross-browser accessible menu using CSS and <ul>.
I've managed to achieve it but only in FF and Opera, in IE

Coffeehouse - WMP11 beta2 UI bug

this was also present in the beta1, it happens (to me) when i/you/... restore the player, maximizing, minimizing(toolbar mode is not afected by this), resizing, etc does not fix the abnormal button behaviour, only a restart of the player.

it looks as it doesn't detect the rollout event.

one funny thing, don't know the technical name for these groups:

stop | prev | play | next [bottom middle]

full screen | compact mode [bottom right]

but the active button is the last hovered in those groups, only full screen or compact remain in hovered state after cursor rollout, never the both.

humm, is this the right place for this? i couldn't find the windows media player team blog and read in other threads ppl complaining about the same.

also, don't know if someone from the team will read this or not but, how about adding winamp-like queue system for the playlist?

imagine a big playlist, playing track1, and you want the next played item to be track 200 followed by track 250 and then continue to track 2.

handy but no big deal.

and another one, there's a flaw in the UI, it doesn't draw as expected when you alter the default border size, i'm using a value of 5px and this is the result when maximized:

the title bar gets cut of, same for the left border.

how about rendering the frame like the Vista version instead of the skinned UI? it would lose the consistency with those Luna themes but...

Coffeehouse - Installation Rant

humm, i haven't used linux for a few months, but as far as i remember, packages installed using a package manager can be easely removed by unselecting the desired package(synaptic, aptitude, etc), mas for manually installed packages you can just "make
uninstall" if you have the source, don't know if dpkg or rpm have an uninstall option ( -u ? ).

edit: all installed packages are listed on the installed package database, accessible via 'aptitude', or so i've been told.

Coffeehouse - Windows Desktop Search 3.0 beta 2 is live!

Humm, what about changing the search box to something like Google's Desktop Search, an overlaying search box accessible via a keyboard shortcut(2 x ctrl) or pen gesture, no?

My tablet's screen has a max res of 1024x768, in landscape mode the search box takes up too much space in the taskbar, and when on portrait mode..

Tech Off - Right click slowdown

humm, i've used that app to disable ALL shell extensions but the problem persisted, tested another machine, AMD cpu, nvidia chipset, with win xp pro, it doesn't happen, tested again on my tablet with the folder tasks disabled and guess what... yeah it
doesn't happen anymore, but there's no logic to the thing lol, another friend of mine tested the right click item followed by right clicking the folder background and it didn't happen to him, Intel cpu, so there goes my theory ( lol ).

yet, it isn't normal for a mouse pointer to slow down on high disk and low cpu activity.

another thing i remembered, notification area open/close animation also makes the mouse pointer to stop until the animation is finished, it's just for 200ms or something but it's anoying.

oh and, this doesn't happen with vista, on the same machine lol, but that's irrelevant lol, different OS, clean install.
