Otto Berkes - Origami's Architect gives first look at Ultramobile PCs
Mar 11, 2006 at 4:20 AMSurround sound effect is not 2 channel.
You cannot achieve this with only 2 channels - Left and Right, you need Left, Right, Center, Rear Left, Rear Right - At least.
There are multiple speakers so sounds can be located.
So with a 5.1 system I can tell exactly where the sounds are coming from, like say in star wars you can hear the spaceship come up behind you and then go infront as it does on the screen.
You can hear the bullets in the matrix movies fly past you.
You just can't do this with simply a left and right channel.

Mar 10, 2006 at 11:17 AMHow is 2.0 the same as 5.1 or 7.1
Sure SRS EMULATES Surround Sound on 2.0, but its still not surround sound.
Also earlier he said it has a headphone jack, to do surround sound out u need 3/4 output jacks, or 6/8 rc outs, or a fiber optic out.
I didn't see any of these on the UMPC.
So how is this meant to support surround sound!
The thing that i can think of to make it support surround sound is a dock, but then that depends on alot of things.

Mar 10, 2006 at 10:11 AMSay i'm spending 7hours on a train or I am on the plane.
I just can't see when 2-3hours would be good for this product.
I think that its only used for local travel, like a hour on the bus to work, then hook it up to the computer so it can charge and sync, then use it on the way home and hook it up then.
Personally I couldnt care less about how much it weighs or how big it is, if i need to lug around a extra few kgs for like an extra 4 hours of battery life I would use it, hey make it wiegh 15kg and u can do curls with it

Out of all of them C# and PHP are my favourites.
Jenny Lam - Designing Experiences at Microsoft
Feb 07, 2006 at 8:50 PMAnd that was a really great interview, it's facinating how much they know and put into design.
One question, After Windows Vista is released could we see those 200+ Start Buttons?

Jan 26, 2006 at 9:06 AMOk well i found a problem with the smoothslide thing, a grey box goes where the selected item should go.
Plus when i click a image, then use the keyboard i get a grey dotted border around the image, i think the above is related to that as i never got the above problem before i used the keyboard.
Heres a screenshot: http://dev.balupton.nghosting.org/ProblemFlickr.jpg

Jan 26, 2006 at 7:42 AMHow come it there were no anchoring for the child controls?
Also for the controls, you have your anchors, and box to stretch the controls, but are there shortcuts to fill?
So heres the stretch box around my button:
o-----o-----o
| |
o o
| |
o-----o-----o
Now what would be good, is so when you double click a 'o', it will stretch or fill to the border(s) of where that 'o' was.
So heres my panel:
---------------------------------------------------------------
| o-----o-----o |
| | | |
| o o |
| | | |
| o-----o-----o |
---------------------------------------------------------------
So now i click the middle right 'o' and it will do this:
---------------------------------------------------------------
| o---------------------------o---------------------------o |
| | | |
| o o |
| | | |
| o---------------------------o---------------------------o |
---------------------------------------------------------------
So when that panel is resized the left position is fixed, but the right side adjusts to the size of the panel.
Anyway great work ill try out the ctp in a week or so...
There was other stuff i wanted to say but i forgot...
And with all the microsoft beta programs i find that trying to submit feedback is hard, because i can never find where i am meant to submit it or talk about it.
Could u post some links to where you want us to talk/submit feedback about it.
Cheers

Oct 20, 2005 at 2:00 PMAlrite I love where Microsoft is going with Vista and WPF (well done).
And with the introduction of Web Gadgets, are you aiming for the web to be application based in the future, so my webpage can be an application made in Visual Studio - I know this raises alot of issues, but it is a good step in communications.
An example of this would be like going Start->Run->http://ClockGadget.com and I have a clock similiar to the one in this video apear, without the constraints of current Web Browsers.
To me thats the future.
And back to topic, Do those Web Gadgets use WPF and XAML?
I would love to see rich internet experiences like Gadgets inside my webpage.
So like for weather.com have All these wonderfull 3D Gadgets of clouds and sunshine telling me my weather!
Like say for the topic i mentioned in the above paragraph with this one, a brilliant example would be the NorthFace Application as a WebPage!
Alrite I hope you like my opinions and reply quickly

PS. and again brilliant work!

Oct 20, 2005 at 1:21 PMARE THEY RESIZABLE?
Seing that everything is vector based, they could/should all be infinitly be able to be resized to 999x999pixels or even 1x1 pixels.
Im a compact man and i want as much stuff in smallest space as possible.
I think that this is a huge thing that needs to be taken into consideration.
Also can i write gadgets in Visual Studio?
Like make a C# application and make it viewable as a gadget?
And is there a exe->gadget convertor for .NET v2.0 Applications?
