BoxingBots at South by South West
Mar 12, 2012 at 8:53 AM@Visitor:Dude, I work in medical devices. I've also built industrial robots. My criteria for awesome is somewhat different than yours. This I consider awesome :

Watch the video on the right. How is that for controlling hardware via motion?
I know it's a hobby project, but still. We know Kinect can do skeletal tracking. So you take all the precision of the skeletal tracking and dumb it down to an on/off switch. If you are doing this at all why not track the acceleration of the arm and the body, so that the robot motion can at least bear some resemblance to that of the operator? Granted, you'd have to use something better than pneumatic actuators.
I'd give credit to Rick Barazza, who probably did the UI.

A .NET developer's view of Windows 8 app development
Sep 19, 2011 at 2:22 PMPlease publish it, or explain why you can't.
A Quick Look At "Windows 8"
Jun 05, 2011 at 1:46 PM@Warhead:
Ja, Mein Führer! I will program in Javascript, and Cobol and Fortran ; anything to save Microsoft!
The difference with the VB to.NET transition is this: at the time .NET was this new thing and it represented the future.
Now, HTML+javascript represents the past. Which is why I don't wanna go there.
If Microsoft invented a new technology, superior to .NET , I'd embrace it . Instead, they took the easy way out - they grabbed what was already out there (HTML5/JS) and represented it as the next best thing to sliced bread. Excuse me for not being excited.

Jun 04, 2011 at 3:15 AMRight now nobody cares about anything but the developer story for Windows 8. Everybody I talked to is pissed about HTML5/JS. Yesterday at Costco I went to look at the Acer Iconia and a guy was already playing with the thing. We started talking and yes, he too was there due to the Windows 8 announcement.
A Quick Look At "Windows 8"
Jun 02, 2011 at 10:34 PMIn the end it's not about performance, democratization, interoperability or any of that crap. It's about Windows division showing devdiv and all of us who is the boss.
Imagine you are windiv and all of a sudden you're told to do a lot of garpics, animations etc. But you don't have a rendering engine to do it. WPF and Silverlight belong to the enemy -devdiv- so they are out. Then you realize that you own a browser and it does have a rendering engine. Of course , that's what we're gona use!
Now, your rendering engine can only do HTML5+JS. So what. It's a crappy developer story, but the developers are like sheep. Didn't they put up with Win32 and COM in the past?
Folks, we are victims of Microsoft's internal wars. Apparently they have a feudal system and wage wars against each other all the time. Product quality is secondary to winning against the other division. In these wars we are just collateral damage.

Jun 02, 2011 at 4:42 PM@section31: That's better than nothing ( thanks for the link) , but if they had something else coming why not just say "we'll have another application model that we're not prepared to talk about at this time" . This would pacify many people.

Jun 02, 2011 at 4:10 PMThis has now surpassed the Muglia effect by several orders of magnitude. I'd really like to know who exactly at Microsoft is beating the HTML5/JS drum.

Jun 02, 2011 at 12:40 PMHe's right. We're just a bunch of sissies. We've gone soft. Real men love pain. To boost my machismo I'm gonna do some COM development right now.

Jun 02, 2011 at 8:22 AMIn the end our opinions will matter about as much as they did in the WHS/drive extender debate. We know the end result. Windows division knows better what's good for you. If a kernel guy tells you to do HTML/JS , that's what you do, dammit ! Who do you think you are?
