Re: Windows 7: Find and Organize Part 1 - The User Experience

 Good work guys.

I loved the idea of virtual folders like we had in the early Windows Vista builds, where the Documents folder was a saved search result, dissapointly that feature was removed as it was too confusing - although it does still exist, it was just unhooked from
the Documents, Music folders etc.

This is an excellent replacement for it. I've always wanted to get public documents and pictures show up in the same view. I had to train the rest of the family to use the Public Documents links, and links to the Home Server on the Favourite Links section
instead. This makes it much simpler to use, and they won't need to remember where specific things are stored anymore. They can just hit Documents on their Start menus and see the lot.

Also like not showing image names in the Pictures view too - I used to be religious about naming images, but now I just leave them with the default name from the camera and tag them instead. I suspect a lot of people do the same thing too.
posted by daSmirnov

Re: Bill Hill: The Future of Reading on the Web, Part 1

Nice to see Bill Hill again.

I remember playing with WEFT3 3 or 4 years ago for some of my websites. It's good to know that it will be opened up so hopefully everyone will latch onto it.

I've also been experimenting with some of the new Vista and Office fonts on the web, but compared to Verdana they're a bit smaller, enough so that I'd like to make them an extra pt larger. I understand that the current CSS3 specs have an ability to set the
size of individual fonts which could eleviate this issue. Any chance we could see this implemented in IE8?

Getting things resolution indepedent is probably the biggest challenge in computing, a lot of people are still stuck in their ways that things should be measued in pixels - I just had a running argument with somebody on it this week, that higher resolution
screens should mean more work space, not higher resolution applications and text.

I've got one screen here that is about 144 DPI, Windows looks absolutely amazing on it (the machine came set to 120 DPI by default). It's just a shame I still come across applications that break, and websites that define font size in pixels. Hopefully once
we start getting better support for higher DPI computer manufacterers will be more willing to up the DPI of their displays and it'll really take off.
posted by daSmirnov

Well you've got things backwards. It's western companies exporting jobs to India or other countries. So they can reduce costs. It's called capitalism.

As for comments on foreigners "stealing" jobs, that's also nonsense, I mean come on you don't own that job, a capitalist "owns" that job, go talk to them. I notice this issue has cropped up in the US a lot with people from Latin America, and in the UK press
with people from the new European Union countries lately, so we're going through yet another wave of it. But it is utter nonsense.

Think of it this way, don't have kids because they're going to take your jobs. Increasing the population (by any means) increases the size of the market it doesn't have any long-term effect on job availability.

Cast your minds back to the 1930s, when all the press were slamming the Jews for stealing your jobs, the 1950s when it was the Indians, then the Africans, and now the Poles and Romanians. Of course all its doing is shifting the blame from those responsible,
the capitalists, onto a scapegoat.

It's easy now to look back and see it as nonsense, but people always fail to make the same connection to what's going on now, same problem just blaming somebody else.

Great stuff, all the new writing training is ace. And the fact I should be able to upgrade my M200 to Windows Vista thanks to Tablet being included in Windows Vista itself.

Of course it probably won't stop me from buying a Vista-generation Tablet as things are looking really good.

Little concerened about how the Tablets with touch and digitisers will work, will you turn off the touch screen? The coolest thing people mention when they see mine is you can actually write on the Tablet and rest your hand on the screen to do it so it's very
natural.

Keep up the great work guys!
posted by daSmirnov
