  • Metro has been tried already, it didn't work

    @wastingtimewithforums:

Remember it?  I've got one.  And its' running Windows 8. Big Smile  Came with Windows XP, replaced with Windows Vista, replaced with Windows 7.  It's the machine that refuses to die.  Don't know if I'll spend the money putting Windows 8 on it when it comes out, as the plan is to buy a replacement.

In my opinion the reason the Tablet PC didn't take off when it did was due to price.  My Toshiba M200 was a good £1500 and my Motion LE1700 was about the same.  Three times more than the junk laptops floating about at the time.

  • Sinofsky: The more crapware, the better

Normally I'd be outraged.  I don't like features being cut, and I don't like having the crap kind of DVD player software we had to put up with in the past being on my computer.

But I'm trying to think of the last time I used a DVD or Blu-ray (yes I have a Blu-ray drive, seemed a good idea at the time I guess) in my computer.

    Two, maybe three years?

Thinking about it, I'm not surprised, might as well cut the costs, as long as its passed along to the consumer of course.

  • Is there a future in the kinect or are people already over it?

For this generation prices need to come down a bit.  They haven't come down since it launched.  Therefore the people who wanted one and could afford one when it was released went and got one.

I'd guess we'll see Microsoft pushing Kinect more maybe this holiday if the price comes down.  Still talking £250 for an Xbox and Kinect.  Not cheap if you don't have an Xbox already.

Then we'll see an improved version for the next generation Xbox in a couple of years.  A few simple changes like USB 3.0 would help massively.

  • Windows 8 CP one month on

Being used full time on two of my computers at home, ye old LE1700 Tablet PC (pen flicks have totally gone all over the place so dragging pages around in IE is well annoying).  It isn't on my main system (well it is but I'm usually on Win 7) because I've been doing a lot of gaming and Shogun 2 is a bit crash happy with it at the moment.

In comparison I was full time with Windows Vista (can't remember what build, but early) and Windows 7 (first public release).

  • Win8, Windows Explore improvements.

Don't like the UP button.  Seems like a pointless waste of pixels, breadcrumbs do the same thing and more.

  • joke: i got a wii ....

Zelda's good.  Shame it looks 10 years old.

  • Good thing I don't use Siri much anyway...

Only some voice recognition on WP7 is done on remote servers. Commands like 'phone such and suc'h, or 'text such and such' is done locally. When you however dictate a passage of text, or a search query then its sent off to the TellMe service.

  • Windows 7 Phone - Mango, Skype, misc?

All Windows Phones should be getting Mango, and soon (I have it on mine), there's a few handsets out there that may take longer, a few of the weird Samsung Focus things with slight different hardware revisions caused a hold up last time.

No, no Skype support yet.  But it is on its way.

I love my Windows Phone, I come from a Windows Mobile and Android background.  Loose a lot of the tinkering, but maybe in my old age I can't be bothered faffing about.

HTC HD7 here, I've been buying HTC's since the SPV C500 (at least what Orange called it).  HD7 is definitely cheaper made than the HD2.  But it's still fairly solid, after a year the chrome finish on the buttons have started to wear through, but its still working alright.

My old man has the LG Optimus 7, apart from getting a faulty one, that took em weeks to get fixed it works alright, but obviously looks a bit chunky but it is solid and the battery life is better than the HD7.

Few work colleagues have the other HTC phone, Trophy I think and that seems alright too.

  • Channel 9 Build

@ZippyV: they're on PDT at the moment.

  • Channel 9 Build

Say hello to one of Windows Vista's most important improvements.

Access to different international clocks, a few mouse clicks.  Knowing when Build is on, priceless.
