Actually, that's the reason why I started coming to Channel 9. I wanted to keep up with tech news but I was sick of the slashdot zealotry. I know c9's news system isn't quite as evolved, but it's a very good start.

And you guys do such a good job of disseminating anything of interest from them that I know I will never have to return again.

Coffeehouse - Why no .net for linux?

OK, I posted this half-joking as a reply for what I would do if I was Bill, but seriously, why don't Microsoft release a .net runtime for linux?

As an asp.net developer, I would *love* to be able to develop apps on a windows workstation, and then deploy to a linux (or anything) web server.

I know a little about mono, but I am wondering why Microsoft isn't doing this. We all know the Java runtime is only popular because it runs on so many os's... why don't MS want in on this?

Isn't the point of virtual machines and runtimes that they make the OS redundant?

Coffeehouse - MSNFOUND is so sad...

If you want some information on what ilovebees AND msnfound are about, you can visit
www.unfiction.com and
www.argn.com

On the subject on msnfound, I believe everyone has missed the point. It is a search opera.

After playing around with it, I have gained a lot of information on the 6 bloggers. I should have more when I get somer return email.

The information gathering is generated by entering search strings into msn search. OK, It may not be standard tech etiquette to return blog fragments that don't exist anywhere else in the search results, but it is a novel way to continue delivering information
and promoting using msn search.

No, it doesn't use RSS. It doesn't have to, and, in fact, would miss point if it did, being much too easy to track the conversations between the bloggers.

I'm trying not to give too much away to people who want to play, but if you try to guess some search strings you"ll get much more interesting results.

Coffeehouse - So, this is what Google has been up to

I think a personalised news service is unneccessary. The majority of people will only want to read from one source, and will read the news headlines, local, and sports. A personalised google news bot will find the same news stories for its user as it does
for 190 million other people.

For the *small* percentage of people who read blogs, I guess it could be useful, but I'm not sure how different it would be from an rss feed app.

Oh, and when I heard "googlezon" the story lost all credibility!

This reeks of a first year media studies university project - complete with technological ignorance ("algorithm..."), star-gazing, and a complete lack of perspective for anything outside the author's extremely narrow focus.

Coffeehouse - Visual Studio 6 and .NET coexisting?

Scott,

A year ago I had a development box running Win2K, Visual Studio 6, and Visual Studio 2003, with the .Net 1.1 runtime. I had no problems at all with both running together.

I think the biggest thing to look out for is the changes the .Net runtime makes to MDAC, but if your system is up to date it shouldn't matter.

That said, if you are planning on installing the Visual Studio 2005 beta / pre-release, nobody sane would recommend you doing so on a machine you use for development or production.

Cheers,

Tech Off - Reflection Emit

I'm brushing up on some of the finer points of c# at the moment, reading "Programming C#" by Jesse Liberty, it's full of really neat stuff.

The author has a good chapter on Reflection, and specifically emitting op codes to dynamically create an IL class.

Obviously the performance on this is fantastic, but I wonder, as a business logic / web apps developer, is there any use in this technique for me?

I'd love to take a crack at it but in traditional n-tier, business apps what reason would I have?
