Agreed, however there's a danger in learning both at the same time if you're a beginner.

PHP and ASP.NET operate on totally different paradigms and modus operandia, yet they both look and feel the same in source view.
Yes I agree, it might be confusing to do both things at the same time. Probably better to stick to one platform at first. Then reset your brain and check out the other one .

You can pretty much forget about asp, unless you'd like to maintain some old legacy website in the future . I really like php, php5 has some nice OO features, yet you can also just hack away old style if you want to do something quick and dirty.

On the other hand there is asp.net, might be a bit tougher to learn. Asp.net has a lot of nice stuff to download. Free development tools, sql server express and a bunch of tutorial videos, if you go this route you'll also learn a bit of vb.net / c# and that
cant be a bad thing.

I would suggest to check out both, cant hurt to have a bit of knowledge of both platforms. And thats probably the best way to find out what you like best.

Coffeehouse - ASP, PHP, MySQL

There are a truckload of php / mysql tutorials on the web. Just do some searching and I am sure you'll find some that fit your level of knowledge at the moment.

As far as testing things out before you upload things to your site, you can run a webserver and php / mysql locally on your own pc and see if things work the way you want before uploading. Only thing you probably need to change after uploading is the connect
string to the mysql database. Thats why those are usually kept in a seperate config file.

Hope this helps .

I do actually have an ipod. I have the old shuffle.
But you know what? ITunes is the worst software i used. It didnt work on my old x64 computer. Doesnt work on this x64 computer.
So it kinda rendered my ipod useless.
And it forces me, like you point out, to install quicktime, which is *LAME*

Zune got nice design.
Cool features
Size that fits me.
Well worked hardware.

You can also look into Creative Zen. I got a Zen V and it works very nice. Only drawback so far is that it doesnt remember where you stopped listening to a podcast . So no bookmarks, but the fast forward works very well . Also as a replacement for iTunes,
you can use mediamonkey, apparently it now also syncs with iPods, though I havent tried it yet.
Hehe, that's very funny, havent played it in quite a while, civ4 is a lot of fun !

About Wow: had a lot of fun the 1st few months it was released, met some fun people I was questing with almost every night, but once you hit 60, it's a whole different game, and just about the only thing to do, is doing instances ad nauseum (and have ppl yell
at you when you're joking around and / or make mistakes).

Going from 60 -> 70 in the new expansion might be fun, I noticed theyre releasing a Collector's edition again, it'll tough not to order it [6].

Coffeehouse - RSS Aggregator Recommendation

Tried quite a few on Windows, and feeddemon won . On my Mac I use NetNewsWire, it's nice to keep Demon and Wire synchonized through Newsgator, but I hardly ever use the webinterface to read rss feeds, cant quite put my finger on it, but it's just not as
easy on the eye.

The new google reader is pretty good, have been using it for a few days and it seems to do the job as well.

Okay, that's another of ISA's failings, steeper requirements, but I'm pretty sure it'll run on a P3/128 with about 100 users fine.

TBH i never checked out ISA server, probably because of the pricetag . There is another thing I like about linux, is that it's very nice to just edit a few text files to edit a configuration and restart the app and you're done. No need to get familiar with
a GUI, wade through a dozen tabs with all sorts of checkboxes etc.. And if you want to have a GUI there is usually one available (for example webmin does a nice job) for most major server apps.

Yes I agree, it's a very nice tool. Only drawback is that the Blogger Beta support doesnt work at the moment, at least not for a lot of people, seeing the comments on the live writer site. Since the Blogger edit window leaves a lot to be desired, live

Coffeehouse - Vista and Longhorn Server Features for Developers

That's exactly how I feel. I think Vista is a _huge_ improvement over Windows XP and people just don't see how much stuff is in it. They simply see the new UI and think that's all.

Thats always a problem when you change/rewrite/redesign things under the hood. The general public (or sales / marketing department) only sees what's on the outside, so if you say, I have rewritten the code behind this program, it's now much easier to manage,
faster etc etc, they just look at you as if they see water burn.

The dual core and X2 cpu's are about the same price (here in Holland at least), but the (good) Dual Core boards are a bit pricey. Shame DDR2 ram prices have skyrocketed lately !

...well, and a typical Knoopix distro does come overloaded with software it seems...and why some of it is on the menu, I really don't know. It is overkill in some cases and there is a point of "offering way too many choices". But any Windows menu can turn
into that given enough time.

Isnt that true for a lot of distro if you select Install everything ? It used to be a trend to stick as much software in a distro and you ended up with 5 email programs, 3 browsers and 6 different panels where you can set your sound volume .

Thats why I like ubuntu's approach, you get the basics and can easily add what you want to run on your machine .
The Bottom Line
RC1 is solid, fast, and much improved over Beta 2. It's still too early to tell whether Microsoft will meet its goal of a January 30, 2007, consumer launch of Vista. But for those, including myself, who were skeptical that Redmond would meet that date,
this new release may put those fears to rest
